In 2005, a small mobile software company based in Palo Alto called Android Inc. has been quietly folded into the growing empire of Google. The acquisition led to the release of the company’s very first “Google phone” three years after the T-Mobile G1 (or HTC Dream, as it was known mostly outside the United States). Google’s philosophy for the G1 focused on one-click search and a rich web experience, and using T-Mobile’s 3G network was critical to its success. The G1 was also the first smartphone to run the open-source Android operating system, and after only six months on the market, it has reached fifth place among the best-selling smartphones in the United States.
