I have a love hate relationship with our elderberry 😂
The lacy creamy white flowers are very pretty and the bees (albeit intermittently) like them 🐝 The plant itself is lush and leafy and provides a wonderful haven for birds, like silvereyes and bowerbirds, who also like feasting on the berries.

But….. it suckers like there’s no tomorrow! 😩 I’ve laid old carpet around the original plant to try and reduce the suckers, but they creep out further and further.

I regularly threaten it with the loppers but then I see a blue wren in there and can’t bring myself to cut it down.

I’m a softie 😂 I should make some elderberry flower cordial and berry syrup. If the birds leave us any 😉

They may be common, but murraya is one of the queens of fragrance. This leafy evergreen shrub produces the most divinely perfumed white flowers in spring and summer, and will often have a flush of flowers after rain.
Grow one near a window or door so the fragrance can drift inside 🥰
