How Scripts and Bars Accelerated Margaret Chideme’s Creative Career

Aspiring author Margaret Chideme self-published her first book in 2021, first 30, a poetry anthology, but did not have much knowledge about the creative industry and how to make a living from her writing.

In 2022, Margaret applied for the scripts and Bars program and was selected to join a cohort of 100 talented and diverse creatives from music and literature sectors.

She gained valuable insights and connections from the workshops, mentorship sessions, and residencies that were part of the program.

She produced and published an audio book through Scripts and Bars, which increased her visibility and sales for her poetry book.

Empowered with Creative enterprise knowledge from Scripts and Bars, she started her own publishing company, Lifeline Publishing, which aims to support other emerging writers and poets.

She entered The Value Creation Challenge, a competition for startups, and came third, winning a cash prize to invest in her business.

Margaret’s Success is testament to the impact of the Scripts and Bars programme.

"It forced me out of my comfort zone and expanded new possibilities for me such as not limiting my writing to the usual blogging and writing of books but even in the creation of music and other forms of art."

Scripts and Bars is an incubation and accelerator programme for Music and literature creatives in Zimbabwe and the UK supported by British Council Creative Economy programme, which supports Cultural professionals and artists to develop their knowledge, artistic practice, skills, and networks contributing to greater prosperity and sustained livelihoods.

How Kuda Rwizi went from Freelance to Published in under 12 Months.

If you are a fan of African fantasy and sci-fi stories, you might have heard of Mutupo, a graphic novel that explores a futuristic take on the tradition of totems by the Shona people of Zimbabwe.

Mutupo is a graphic novel that explores a futuristic take on the tradition of totems by the Shona people of Zimbabwe. The creator of Mutupo is Kudakwashe Rwizi, a talented digital storyteller based in Harare Zimbabwe, who uses comic books and animation to bring his visions to life.

Kuda Rwizi had dreams of publishing his own stories but lacked the resources and support to do so until he joined the Scripts and Bars incubator programme.

With the support of Scripts and Bars Incubator, Kuda Rwizi was able to finish and publish his first comic book, Mutupo, attracting over 10,000 readers online within three months.

Kuda Rwizi also created an animated trailer to promote his graphic novel. The trailer caught the attention of Noir Cesar, a publishing company that specializes in African manga and anime.

Kuda Rwizi signed a publishing and distribution deal with Noir Cesar and Tokyo Pop in late 2022, covering North America and Europe. Kuda Rwizi’s success story is a testament to the impact of the Scripts and Bars creative incubator programme.
