Hiee peeps!
Here's little bit about me (okay, maybe a lotta bit 🤭) and how I became the gamer girl I am today!
My name is Esther, and yes...I am a real dotaplayingmom 🙃 (formerly known as dotaplayingwife, until I had a baby in 2017)
I was born in South Korea and my family immigrated to the US when I was 5. I went through all of my education here; attended Ayala High school then I graduated college with a B.A. in Econ at UC San Diego, which is where my love for gaming began 🥰
I started playing games early on and always enjoyed them...some of you might remember Asteroids, Pac Man, Caterpillar and of course Tetris. Those were a few the earliest games I played. And I remember slaying in Orgeon Trail (hunting them buffalo's🐃), Yukon Trail and Amazon Trail in grade school, then DDR and PUMP in Jr. High, along side N64 007 Goldeneye, Mario Cart, and some Nintendo DS games like Zelda, and whatever else was on my R4 chip.
I got more seriously into gaming in college, playing a variety of xbox360 games like Need for Speed, Winning11 10, Halo (I was absolutely horrible at this game 😆), and Guitar Hero (I wanted to be THE GUITAR LEGEND, I literally did not move on to the next song until I got 5 stars on all 🙈 would see the wall feeding for days- if you've ever played Guitar Hero for a prolonged period of time you'd know what I mean about the wall feed: basically when you look at a wall after you've been playing for 8 hours straight, the wall starts to warp and feed like the guitar lines from the game 😅).
Then there was Bejeweled on Facebook among others, and halfway through my freshman year, I discovered gambling (uh oh 😬). I got completely sucked into Texas Hold'em, Three Card Poker, and Black Jack, visiting the casinos around my university where my student loans would either multiply or diminish very quickly. There might or might not have been times where I'd gotten stuck wondering how I would pay for the next quarter's tuition. My gambling career extended well into my late 20s, and for about a year or two after I got married, I frequented Vegas, sometimes more than once a month because I didnt want the "comps" to go to waste. I dont think we'd ever had to pay for a single room. Then when I got pregnant, we were still going to Vegas, but I would play Dota all day and all night in the room while my husband left to gamble.
In college, I also found myself deep into anime. I would binge watch Naruto, Bleach, One Piece, Avatar and some other OG animes all night until my old school, 3 inch thick laptop would literally shut off from overheating, which was the only way I knew to stop watching. Lol.
After I graduated, I moved to South Korea and found my new home at PC bangs (at a high class version of their internet cafes). When Diablo III first came out, I would spend countless hours playing, eating, drinking, smoking and sleeping in my little haven with empty instant ramen cups and togo pizza boxes piling sky high next to my monitor at the cafe.
A few more life events happened, like Candy Crush (beat the whole game twice through, only stopped playing because they didnt make the levels fast enough), Viking Island (I committed 5 years of my life to this Korean phone game, building a massive empire, then cold turkey quit after my baby was born) before I landed on Dota 2.
How I started playing Dota I'll save for another post because that's a whole 'nother story 😁
I'm sure you've guessed by now that I have an incredibly addictive personality. I have that go big or go home, all or nothing kind of mentality, Dota definitely has tapped into that side of me and I am HEAVILY addicted to it 🙈 I compare it with a drug high ...the high that you get after an hour and 20 mins match when you and your squishy team goes against all odds and defend your ancient for 25 mins not leaving the base against the tankiest team who come at you with their ancient creeps but you team wipe them 5 times and go mid and end with t2 towers still up, both top and bottom.
I chase that high... when the other team is ra**ng your base but you and your pudge sell your items and buy TP boots to rat their ancient and win with only 2 hits left on your ancient.
Games that give you hope and thrill, matches that make your adrenaline pump, when you and your sniper beat that crazy dusa with all her items as she shreds your whole team but somehow manage to come out with a W.
My story is still being written and I'm glad you guys can be a part of this next chapter as I start streaming this game that I love.
I hope you guys enjoyed reading this and I hope you will also enjoy watching!
For the love of Dota,
-dotaplayingmom 💋
