When i started traveling, i was on the hunt to “find myself”. I would say it every day, like it was something i would discover under a rock someday. Like it was something to happen upon. There would be an “ah-ha” moment and i would suddenly have found me. I thought that’s what happened to everyone. That when you grow into an adult, you just automatically find out who you really are.
Gosh i couldn’t be more wrong. I’m learning now that i already know who i am. Who i am is based on who i’ve been. The best way to get to know yourself is by looking into the past and seeing you for you. Understanding patterns and behaviors, seeing what makes you happy and what tears you apart, witnessing your growth and what you’ve learned.
I look back at myself as a 5 year old little girl, and see the same wants and desires i have now. I see the same insecurities, the same craving for appreciation. I look at 16 year old me and see the way i handle pain, the way i deal with heartache and loss. I see myself now, someone who’s still growing, still learning and un-learning. I see myself 5 years from now looking back at all we’ve been through, and how much more growing we get to do. I know she knows me, i know she’s smiling at me.
I’ve always known myself, i’ve never needed to search for it, i just needed to know where to look.
