This week Farra and Scott dive into the topic of perfectionism. The two get honest about their own struggles with perfectionism both in their academics and their careers. What makes us want to be perfect? Why do we work so hard often to the point of anxiety to avoid even the appearance of shortcomings? Scott and Farra discuss how perfectionism has been built into the culture of the United States, and how it has even influenced our political candidates over the past few decades. The duo also dives into what the heck is going on with President Biden's so-called ban on beef. https://www.asmpodcast.com/blog/season-2episode-29-perfectionism-and-bidens-beef

Earlier this week, a jury found Derek Chauvin guilty of all 3 counts brought against him by the state of Minnesota for his role in the death of George Floyd — second-degree murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter.

Chauvin has not received his sentencing yet as a result of the guilty verdict, but here’s an explanation of what each charge means.

This week on American State of Mind, we’re talking about the charges, trial — and how it all relates to the concepts of accountability and justice.

Last week, Georgia's Governor Brian Kemp signed new legislation, called the “Election Integrity Act of 2021” into law. In recent elections in the state, there were widespread claims of both voter fraud and voter suppression.

In the legislation’s introduction, it outlines its intent to “address the lack of elector confidence in the election system on all sides of the political spectrum, to reduce the burden on election officials, and to streamline the process of conducting elections in Georgia by promoting uniformity in voting.”

The 98-page legislation establishes new laws surrounding absentee voting, voter identification, early voting access, precinct size and wait times, drop boxes and mobile voting centers, and much (MUCH) more.

The election law overhaul has received backlash from corporations like Coca-Cola, and even resulted in players requesting the league pull the All-Star Game from Atlanta (which it did).

In debate on the floor, Democrats called it "Jim Crow 2.0" and Republican lawmakers stood by the changes, saying there "is no voter suppression" anywhere in it.

This week on American State of Mind, joined Scott and Farra again to talk about some of the bill's provisions, pros/cons of some of the changes made — plus, we answer some of the questions you sent in about mental health and news consumption.

We could all probably agree that we want to be told the truth of what’s going on in the world. We don't want to be misinformed, and can feel hurt when we're lied to or mislead in some way — whether it's about something happening in the news, or if skydiving really is that safe.

Good journalists understand their professional responsibility to pursue this work. And for a long time, we trusted them to do that.

Now, in a news media landscape where we get information 24/7 (even when there aren't updates to share), each of us are able to share whatever “facts”, stories, and details we want, whenever we want, and anyone with an email can make a "news" twitter account — that trust is eroding.

But it doesn't change our need for factual information, or that a free press is essential to democracy.

Journalists and news media outlets certainly still have that responsibility. And the reality is that, as consumers and sharers of news, we have a responsibility pursue it, too.

This week on American State of Mind, walked us through five questions we can ask ourselves while we're consuming the news. We can all help fight misinformation by practicing media literacy — swipe to see how.

The founders understood the importance of the press. So much so that they made sure to list it as a freedom protected even outside the regular freedom of speech. But the fourth estate is falling as trust in the news seems to be disappearing in the age of instant news. This week we have Megan Burns on to talk about Journalism and the current state of reporting in the United States. We dive into what questions you should ask when reading a story and how to determine a good source of reporting. We also talk about the COVID 19 vaccines and Megan shares her experience with the vaccine and her side effects. https://www.asmpodcast.com/blog/episode-25-vaccines-and-the-fourth-estate-with-megan-burns

"Congress shall make no law... abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press..."

The founders understood the importance of the press. So much so, they made sure to list it as a freedom protected even outside the regular freedom of speech.

But most of us feel like journalism, news media, the press — what's often referred to as The Fourth Estate — is falling, as trust in traditional forms of news seem to be disappearing in the age of digital media and instant, 24-hour news.

This week on American State of Mind, Megan Burns (who you might remember from our Election Night Live Stream!) on to talk about Journalism and the current state of reporting in the United States.

We dive into:
— What questions you should ask when reading a news story
— How to determine a good source of reporting

*And BONUS: Megan got the COVID-19 vaccine and spills the tea about her experience and side effects.

New Episode! In the 1970s, the self-esteem movement came on the scene! This concept of self-esteem was not only promising for individuals, but for our society as a whole. The movement was endorsed by the government, research focused on the topic, and it became a cultural phenomenon in Western societies. So what’s the problem? In the last 20 years, self-esteem has been shown to have some major pitfalls. So how do we get the positive benefits provided by self-esteem without the downsides? This is where self-compassion comes in! So what’s the difference between self-esteem and self-compassion?
