New series!
I'm going to be focusing on Wisconsin Foraging. For right now, all I've got is pictures, but maybe I'll do a video down the road!
Up first, we have Pineappleweed (Matricaria discoidea). It is also known as Wild Chamomile!
Pineappleweed grows well in poor soil. I harvested this right along my driveway.
When the cone shaped flower is crushed it smells like regular chamomile with just a hint of pineapple or citrus. The leaves can be harvested and used in a salad and the flower bud can be brewed into a tea.
Pineappleweed has similar effects to its cousin German Chamomile. It can be used to treat insomnia, and is good for relaxation and anti-anxiety. It can also help your digestive tract by releasing gas and easing indigestion.
I made my Pineappleweed into a delicious tea! I washed the buds and then steeped them for 10 minutes in 175°F water. I probably could have used more buds than I did but I absolutely loved the tea it made! It tasted so fresh and bright. Just like regular chamomile with a hint of that pineapple or citrus flavor I described before.
10/10 would recommend you try this! Stay tuned for more Wisconsin Foraging content down the road! While you're at it, go check out my latest episode on podcast where I talk about some other foragable items.
