Throwback Thursday: During COVID times, the murder of George Floyd sparked outrage across the country. In Seattle, a group of protestors took over an area of downtown to express the need for change.

To get a clearer perspective, we went and talked to a few people. Here's their story:

This view from the Herald Building has treated us exceptionally well these last 3+ years. Much gratitude - but time for a new studio and place to make bigger stuff. Plus, we'll always have Makeworth.

We're taking a deeper look into story in our projects, and frankly there's no better place to start than this - from the esteemed showrunner Craig Mazin (writer of 'The Last of Us'). He recommends you take the blowtorch to most of the BS out there:

In this special solo episode of Scriptnotes, Craig Mazin talks through the basics of story. This episode -- along with the entire back catalogue of Scriptnote...

Oh heck yaz! Working with C+C | All about the Good is always a pleasure - but winning a few Telly's along the way just puts a cherry on top. We landed a Silver and a Bronze for a couple TV campaigns we helped produce, with special hat tip to Allison Arrington (Martin), Wyatt Curtiss, Camille Adams, Carey Evenson, Mel Gutierrez, Tony Teran, Rachel Lovrovich and Francesca Davidson. Plus the whole dang Moment crew đŸ‘đŸ».

Check out 'Phone Chill' here - which required a few days of stop motion in our studio and ironically filmed on the hottest day in recorded history:

We’re so psyched to work with OneAmerica again. This awesome organization has spent the last 20 years empowering immigrants to bring more diverse representation into the community and government. They are also a really cool and inspiring group of people to work with. For their 20th anniversary, we made a video covering some of their major accomplishments (which are numerous, and impressive). Here's the link to learn more about them, and we'll post the film we made for them soon.

IT'S HERE! The Pickford Film Center project.

The forecast called for rain at 5:01PM on 1/12/22, right at the start of our night shoot. But instead it started to pour at 4:46 - and it didn't let up for 9 hours until after we wrapped at 1:00AM in the morning. We were soaked, we were cold, but we also knew we had been involved iin something special for an organization we truly believe in.

We took a diferent approach for this fundraising film. Let us know what you think:

Oh heck yaz, so many people to thank for the Pickford Film Center project (dropping tomorrow), starting with a cast that starts with the one and only Brina Rabang. She literally weathered the storm for 9+ hours as we filmed in the pummeling rain into the wee hours of the AM. Then there's Elena Stecca and , who also had to brave the weather Gods. And a crew that included Chris Koser, (Jarod Langdon), Liam Bateman, Julien Scherliss, Chris Donaldson, Molly Jane Williamson, DPdrones and projectionist Greg Campbell. Plus the whole team at the Pickford, who had faith we could pull it all off in the first place. Watch this space.

Poor Liam Bateman. He’s been living a trial by fire ever since he started here at Moment. One minute, he’s being asked to composite out sandbags from a moving shot, the next he’s being asked to design cool graphics and spearhead social media, the next he has to archive 8 years worth of messy footage, the list goes on and on. So when we asked him to elegantly add classic movies to the sides of buildings in downtown Bellingham - all he did was smile and get 'er done. Check out the video.

Yes, a lot of this was shot practically, with real images being projected on real buildings in real time (and very rainy weather ha ha), but it was Liam’s visual expertise that really helped make it all happen.

One of the great people we get to work with is cinematographer Chris Koser. The beauty and privilege of working with Chris is that once he's in, he is ALL in. No one works harder or cares more - even after 8 hours of rain spitting you in the face (which was the case when we made the fundraising film for Pickford Film Center ). Check out his work at www.chriskoser.com. Some truly exceptional stuff here.

Can't wait for the next one.

Chris Koser is an award-winning American cinematographer from Seattle WA. Chris has shot over 160 commercials for TV and web in over 17 different countries. Today, Chris contracts as a full-time freelance director/cinematographer in Los Angeles, CA.

For a project like the Pickford Fundraising film (from script to screen in less than 40 days),collaboration was more important than ever. By working with the Pickford Film Center team, we were able to quickly land on an initial concept that spoke to both the power of film and why the theater’s expansion is so important to the community.

Now we just needed to pray to the Weather Gods (the old and the new) .

Here are some story board images and the corresponding shots of what ended up in the film. As Ben Franklin likes to say ‘If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.’

When the Pickford Film Center came to us in December looking for a fundraising film to expand their theater, we were both excited and terrified. Excited, because who wouldn’t want to help a true gem of Bellingham, one that literally embodies everything we’re all about? And terrified, because they had a scary timeline of just about a month to come up with an idea and make it happen. In all honesty, we weren’t 100% convinced we could do them justice given the schedule.

But we cleared our minds of the holiday eggnog. We put pen to paper. We started. And sometimes that’s all it takes.
Here’s a couple Behind the Scenes (BTS) photos from the shoot. We’re dropping the film next Friday (2/25) - so keep your eyes open for it.

Special thanks to the Pickford team, who collaborated with us to make it happen. And a fearless cast and crew, which we’ll highlight more next week. Without them, we couldn’t have made ‘The Dream’ come alive.

In the current (and frustrating) age of virtual events, it's still nice that our short film 'Maslow' was accepted into the 47th Boston Sci-Fi Film Festival. More than half the fun is the networking and learning from others, but alas that will have to wait....

The Boston Science Fiction Film Festival(“Boston SciFi”) is an 11-day cinematic event held at the historic Somerville Theatre from February 9th to the 19th. The 2017 edition marks our 42nd anniversary as the oldest genre fest in America.

A lot of great people to thank on this one - so please go check out the credits on the latest work we produced for the Washington Safety Traffic Commission. Special hat tip to agency C+C - who made it all possible - and Creative Director/Writer Wyatt Curtiss and producer Camille Adams. This TV spot was creatively challenging and really got our wheels turning, which is what made it fun. Check it:

Our old pal Ben Franklin used to tell us that 'If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.' He would usually say this right before he headed over to the craft service table, and we always took it to heart.

That's why for our spot for the Washington Traffic Safety Commission and agency extraordinaire C+C (which came up with the killer creative), we tried to dial everything in long before shoot day. Schedules, bikes, cars, pedestrians, trucks, kids, it all had to be choreographed pretty tightly for the single 'one-shot' we'd planned. So one of the things we did (among many) was create this animatic, which helped us visualize how it all might look.

Keep your eyes on this space. The real spot is dropping tomorrow!

World Premiere: Hey everyone - here's the link to our 11 minute short film 'Tooth', about a young boy who thinks all the magic in the world will disappear if he loses his last baby tooth. It made a nice dent on the festival circuit (winning some Best Short Film and Best Story Awards) so take a look if you are so inspired.

To all the makers out there: keep up the good work. And let's make more magic happen in 2022.

One of the things we do as a company is put aside a percentage of the money we make on commercial projects into a 'Creative Fund'. This allowed us to make 'Maslow' and our next release, 'Tooth'. 'Tooth' is just wrapping up the festival circuit, where it won Best Short at the Gold Coast Film Festival and Open Window International Film Festival, and even played at the legendary Mann’s Chinese theater in Hollywood. You can learn more at www.patreon.com/momentfilms.

In the meantime, here's some fun BTS with star Jacob Amirault and producer Chris Donaldson.

We have another short film releasing on 12/21/21. This one was shot right in the thick of COVID, but with a little persistence, luck, and lots of hand sanitizer, it all came together. Will the magic disappear?
