Lunch today at the Grab and Go in DIA….after perusing the “simple” ham sandwich and determining that it would be drier than the Great Sand Dunes, I passed over the other bready options and selected the Chef’s Salad. It boasted ham, turkey, tomatoes, cheddar cheese, cabbage, iceberg lettuce, and hard cooked eggs. I did manage to open small plastic pouch of “Ranch” dressing without my leatherman and squeeze it on the salad, which upon an attempt at stirring was actually 95% iceberg lettuce….but it was mostly crisp. The hard cooked eggs consisted of 2 thin slices of egg, which was substantially more than the turkey…which was nonexistent. Since no knife was provided, the ham was no doubt chopped into minute pieces to enable to hungry Traveller to ingest it…thanks..The 3 small cubes of cheese may have been cheddar in a former life because in this salad they devoid of flavor. The 3 tiny tomatoes were very tasty, as befits tiny tomatoes….best part of the salad. In retrospect, the salad was a bargain for $10.50 compared to the sawdust sandwiches selling for $12 and up. So sadly, fellow travelers, I have to give it 1 droolie.

Fireburg Haus Sugar Station……8-17-2023

Fluttered by the Fireburg Haus Sugar Station today for a quick snack. The owners finally hung up the Big Feeding Station which, in theory, can accommodate 6 customers at a time, although territorial combat almost guarantees that they won’t all be occupied at the same time. Juice was actually really good….sweet and slightly sticky and not at all fermented into something toxic or at least inebriating …a good thing, since Wifey nearly kicked me out of the nest last week after drinking some older fermented juice unwittingly. Did have to fight to retain my spot at the feeder while being dive bombed by 2 Greenies and 1 Ruby, but succeeded in keeping my spot. Sadly, the juice ran out overnight. The next morning, I fully expected the Fireburg Haus Sugar Station to be open for business before 7am, but no dice. Sat on the pole holding the feeder for at least 30 minutes! The juice is decent but the service could really use improvement. So I have to give it 1+ droolies.

DOG BAR….CUCHARA, CO…..8-13-2023

A favorite watering hole near the Spanish Peaks, in the quaint town of Cuchara, CO, the Dog Bar has been around for eons. Went there to have a beer and eat some bar food…as that is what they have. Pizza, burgers, a variety of appetizers, nearly all fried. One in our party of 4 ordered the fried pickles for us to share….out came a large platter of thin strips of what must have been pickles in a former life, battered and deep fried and totally covered with salt. The salty breading completely overwhelmed whatever might have still been left of dill pickles that were supposed to be inside. Perhaps the salt was a ploy to get folks to order and drink more beer, but we ate what we could get down and then pushed the rest away. Thankfully, the management comped our order. I ordered the “Slopper” which was advertised as a hamburger patty covered in green chili and served on a bun, accompanied by onion rings. The onion rings were good and crispy and hot, and contained actual onions (a nice thing since lots of bars and such now just serve extruded onion puree in a batter and claim they are onion rings…bs) and were heartily consumed by me and friends. I ordered the Slopper with the bun on the side, as I couldn’t really think how such a Slopper could be eaten on thick bread. The Slopper was decent, although the meat was a bit tough, even though it was ground meat. The green chili was yummy and I wished, in hindsight, that I had just ordered a bowl of the green chili and skipped the meat. The beer? The first 3 selections that husband ordered…printed on the menu…were not available but #4 was good, so he said. I ordered a Corona but they were out so I had a normal Dos Equis, which was normal. Ok, I know Dog Bar is an experience and an icon for many folks, so I don’t want to rain on your parade. But I give it 2 ½ droolies…

BAGEL DELI….DENVER….8-12-2023

This is one of my favorite eateries….and it is always great. Unpretentious diner/café atmosphere in a strip center, with a wait staff that has been there for ages…and are always attentive. Usually my husband and I share a Reuben sandwich and I get the potato salad and he gets fries and we still have food leftover to take home. The sandwiches rival those in Jewish delis you find in New York, with the meat piled up so high you need a well thought out plan and cutlery to attack the sandwich. The corned beef and the pastrami is thinly sliced and very tender…no fatty or sinewy pieces..and the bread is nicely flavored and soft, chewy but not balloon. The matzo ball soup is a real treat…the broth is defatted and never too salty, a common problem with chicken soup in eateries. The matzo balls are baseball sized and so light they would float in a deeper bowl. Potato pancakes, potato salad, pickles, etc. are all worth eating. The breakfast favorite of my husband is the corned beef hash with eggs and either an English muffin or the specialty of the house….a bagel. This Jewish eatery is not to be missed if you are in Denver. I give it 5 drooley faces

MICHELINE’S GUIDE TO EATING (OUT AND IN)

Greenbriar Inn---Longmont, CO—8-10-2023
Dined at the Greenbriar Inn last night. The venue is beautiful, in a lovely setting with a nice terrace. Dining rooms inside are elegant and the service is really good. There were 3 of us eating dinner. One ordered the tom-kai soup as a starter which was wonderful---spicy complex flavors. I order the lobster caprese which was underwhelming. The lobster (or maybe it was langoustine?) was tough and lacked flavor. The tomatoes were underripe, but the cheese shavings were delicious, and the sauce was tasty. Another ordered the Caesar salad which was interesting in delicious. My companions ordered the beef tenderloin with mashed potatoes and grilled asparagus and a demi-glace sauce. They said all was delicious and so it looked. I ordered the duck breast but changed the sides to fingerling potatoes and grilled asparagus. The potatoes lacked seasoning, but the asparagus was great. The duck breast was cooked medium rare, which is fine, but it was bit tough. My main complaint (if you can call it that) was that the duck skin was not crispy and the layer of fat between the skin and meat was still there…it had not cooked away. This is one of the reasons I rarely order duck in a restaurant because they rarely roast the skin to crispiness and render out all the fat. This is not hard to do, and I don’t understand why it isn’t done. I would recommend that duck breasts be cooked sous vide first to make them tender and still medium rare and then roasted or sauteed until the skin is crispy and all the fat is rendered out. But in fairness, the overall experience was better than good, and I recommend the Greenbriar Inn for food, wine, service and ambience.
I give it
