Neuroscience? Check! Brain? Check! Perceptions? Check! Consensus? Nope.

In this episode of What am I?, I talked to neuroscientist Dr. Pascal Wallisch about his research on our difference in perceptions and why we disagree on what we see or hear.

You are right, and everyone else is wrong. Okay, maybe not everyone else but a lot of people.
No matter what subject that is, we tend to think we are right most of the time.
After all, being right is soothing, while being wrong is a threat to our status.

But, if you are not wrong, how can you learn? How can you avoid new mistakes if there aren't any? How can you improve your behavior?

In this episode, Dr. Pascal Wallisch and I discuss why using your perceptions as a baseline for understanding your behaviors is not actually reliable.
If that is the case, can you even trust your perceptions to determine how other people's behaviors should be?

Dr. Wallisch studied "The Dress" and the "Laurel-Yanny" phenomena, which took over the internet a few years ago. He also helps us see that cognitive biases, although sometimes portrayed negatively, are just a natural way to help us survive and thrive in the world we live in.

Hearing is a two-step process. We first capture sound waves but then our brains combine that information with data from other senses and our prior experiences.
In the process of integrating information, our brains may make use of illusions in order to make sense of things.

In this episode, we talk to Dr. Rebecca Hirst, who is an expert on illusions and perceptions.
One of her main studies focuses on the Sound Induced Flash Illusion (SIFI) and how that affects our perceptions as we age.

Have you heard of Lady Mondegreen?
In 1954, the American writer Sylvia Wright wrote about the times her mother would read to her an old poetry book.
In one of her favorite poems, she would hear her mother saying "They have slain the Earl Amurray, and Lady Mondegreen." However, the actual words were "They have slain the Earl of Murray, and have laid him on the green."
She then coined the term "mondegreen" which we still use today to describe a mishearing - also called an oronym.
If you have ever misheard the lyrics of a song, you know what that means.

Here is my own example of a mondegreen.
In the song Blank Space, Taylor Swift sings "got a long list of ex-lovers."
When I first listened to it, I heard "got lonely Starbucks lovers." Since then, I cannot hear anything else!

Hear it yourself:

What about you?
What are your mondegreens?

The stairs and the jumping guys - the "super illusion brothers" - are not moving; they are simply changing colors.

What other illusions have caught your attention?
