Gradually he became disillusioned with the chaos of the battle. He often found himself among men who openly branded the rulers of Saudi Arabia and other Persian Gulf states as infidels, deserving slaughter. He said this bothered him, but it did not stop him from returning to the battlefield. In the end, it was the slaughter of innocents that made him decide to quit, he said, and a broader feeling that the rebels alongside him were not doing it for the right reasons. “If the fight is not purely to God, it’s not a real jihad,” he said. “These people are fighting for their flags.” But there was another reason he gave up the fight. “Bashar has started to put Sunnis on the front line,” he said of Syria’s leader. “This is a big problem. The rebels do not want to fight them. The real war is not against Bashar himself, it is against Iran. Everything else is just a false image.”

The Saudis are bent on ousting Syria’s president, Bashar al-Assad, and his patron, Iran. But their only real means of fighting them is through a proxy war using fighters over whom they have almost no control.

"People like me really shouldn't complain about anything, at least not at the personal level. I've been extraordinarily lucky from birth, and most misfortunes I've experienced have been self-inflicted. That's one of the reasons Thanksgiving is a favorite holiday; though I'm not religious, I like the idea of a day set aside to be thankful for one's blessings and grateful for friends, family, and random acts of good fortune. As in past years, today I offer up this year's Top 10 Things I Am Thankful for This Year (Foreign Policy division)."

"Something extraordinary happened on Saturday evening at the American Studies Association’s annual meeting in Washington, DC. At a packed open meeting called by the ASA’s National Executive Council to discuss a resolution to “endorse and honor” the Palestinian call for a boycott of Israeli academic institutions, speaker after speaker rose to express strong support for the resolution. They urged the council to vote on it without further delay or deferral."

The American Studies Assiciation’s meeting showed that the time of fear of debate over boycotting Israel may be over.

Note: Watch this video! The US Military has employed depleted uranium in Iraq and no Mother F... in the world dared to have them accountable for the crimes and atrocities they committed in Iraq. Americans deserve better leaders. Th US government has nuked Japan at the end of WWII, and has used a depleted form of uranium in Iraq and yet they impose sanctions against Iran which views possession of nuclear weapons a liability and seeks nuclear capability for deterrence purposes.

Not only does Iraq have to deal with the physical toll of a decade-plus of war, it's also been left with a huge, and ongoing, health crisis.

"A voracious model of capitalism forced down the throats of the world as the only way to run a modern economy, at a cost of ballooning inequality and environmental degradation, had been discredited – and only rescued from collapse by the greatest state intervention in history. The baleful twins of neoconservatism and neoliberalism had been tried and tested to destruction."

"By reading the image closely, you can see that the teenager in the right background is buttoning up her blouse. It’s a curious action. Why would she be preoccupied with a button while the other people in the photograph were terrified of being killed? Why was the button undone to begin with?"
So we ask again: what are we to make of the informational erasure surrounding this iconic artifact of US history, one that indicates sexual violence in the plain light of day? And why is it that most Americans readily recognize the “Napalm Girl” but not the “Black Blouse Girl?”

"Rep. Sherman, who previously claimed that the point of sanctions is to "hurt the Iranian people," continues to demonstrate that he cares very little for how many Iranians are killed or injured as a result of his reckless policies. In the wake of the historic nuclear deal struck in Geneva last weekend, Rep. Sherman has objected to a provision of the deal that would enable Iran to purchase spare parts for its aging civilian aircraft, which currently suffers one of the highest accident rates in the world."

Many members of Congress have supported sanctions despite the negative impact that they have had on the Iranian people. But Rep. Sherman seems to relish the pain the sanctions inflict on Iranians.

27/11/2013

"In fact, the real issue isn't whether Iran gets close to a bomb; the real issue is the long-term balance of power in the Persian Gulf and Middle East. Iran has far more power potential than any of the other states in the region: a larger population, a fairly sophisticated and well-educated middle class, some good universities, and abundant oil and gas to boost economic growth (if used wisely). If Iran ever escapes the shackles of international sanctions and puts some competent people in charge of its economy, it's going to loom much larger in regional affairs over time. That prospect is what really lies behind the Israeli and Saudi concerns about the nuclear deal. Israel and Saudi Arabia don't think Iran is going to get up one day and start lobbing warheads at its neighbors, and they probably don't even believe that Iran would ever try the pointless act of nuclear blackmail. No, they're just worried that a powerful Iran would over time exert greater influence in the region, in all the ways that major powers do. From the perspective of Tel Aviv and Riyadh, the goal is to try to keep Iran in a box for as long as possible -- isolated, friendless, and artificially weakened."

The interim nuclear deal with Iran is an important step forward, and the various negotiating teams can be justly proud of their achievement. Far be it from me to be a killjoy at this rare moment of progress, but let's not lose our heads amid all the high-fiving and back-patting. Why? Because Iran's…

"So actually, folks, the Likud government of Netanyahu is completely isolated in its loud rejection of these negotiations. Virtually everyone else in the Middle East is positive, and most of the countries that count (by size and power) are absolutely enthusiastic. The degree of Israeli isolation is matched only by the extremeness of its rhetoric. One Israeli cabinet member who has read too much Tom Clancy warned of “suitcase bombs” provided by Iran to terrorist for use in Western cities. Iran doesn’t have a nuclear weapon and there aren’t any such things as suitcase bombs and no country has ever given away a nuclear weapon to anyone, let alone to a scruffy terrorist. And, again, Iran doesn’t have a nuclear weapon or any particular prospect of one. Israel in contrast has several hundred warheads and the means to deliver them, bombs that it developed sneakily and under false pretenses. And Israel routinely uses its nuclear stockpile to threaten or blackmail other countries (as with Ariel Sharon’s threats directed at Saddam Hussein’s Iraq)."

"On Sunday morning, Tehran was bubbling with excitement: many Iranians, whose lives have been dramatically affected by the sanctions, had stayed up all night waiting to hear the news. Reporters were live on air from Geneva, finally delivering real stories before turning in for some well-deserved sleep—and Iran, if not the whole world, seemed to breathe a sigh of relief, at least for now."

There was a sense that this session of talks with Iran was likely to be the last, whether or not a deal was struck.

"The most intriguing question now is whether Obama intends to remain on the path of conflict with Netanyahu on all that’s related to the Israeli-Palestinian track. Will Russia, China and the European powers agree to cooperate in this arena as well? Will they dare advance, in opposition to the position of Israel’s prime minister, another agreement that would prevent the use of violence in order to solve this bloody conflict?"

The success of the P5+1 in closing a deal with Iran might encourage the body to take part in the Israeli-Palestinian talks and fill the diplomatic space left by the Middle East Quartet.

26/11/2013

"The six-month interim deal between major powers and Iran, renewable for a further six months pending a full accord (for a period to be defined), freezes Iran’s nuclear program about where it is — at a technologically advanced point short of militarization. But it fast-forwards American-Iranian relations and may thereby redraw the strategic map of the Middle East."

The best Iran deal that could be had reorders the map of the Middle East and compels Israel to think again.
