Abu Bakr al Baghdadi, leader of ISIS, reported killed in a US raid, last night.

He was thought to be in hiding near the ruins of his Caliphate, somewhere along the Syrian-Iraqi border... But he was pinpointed in the Turkish and Al-Qaeda controlled Syrian province of Idlib. His cover was blown when he tried to exfiltrate his family members out of the province back into Turkey. He apparently detonated his vest during the American raid.

The US are conducting DNA and biometric tests on the body to confirm. President Trump is preparing a statement.

The Syrian conflict is taking a weird turn, if ever it was possible for this war to get weirder...

There have been many allegations of Turkey disregarding the laws of war in Syria. Ankara has been accused of using White Phosphorus on civilian Kurdish population centres in Northern Syria. We can't publish the videos and pictures on our feed as it would breach Facebook T&C's but a quick search online provides several returns on the topic. There's also a video of Turkish proxies beheading prisoners floating about...

Yesterday, Pompeo came up with the ludicrous statement that president Trump was ready to take military action against Turkey if necessary. Nobody is really sure of what this means, considering both countries are part of NATO!

An Iraqi defence spokesperson has said that US troops evacuating Syria and going to Iraq have not received the authorisation from Baghdad to remain on Iraqi soil... Awkward... Although there isn't much Baghdad could do about it.

Additionally, it seems Washington is about to make a U-turn regarding evacuating Syria... It seems the US DoD may have found a way to convince Trump to keep some troops in Syria: The oil. The plan would involve several hundred US soldiers to "guard" the Syrian oil wells in the Deir Ezzor province. This seems to be aimed at preventing Damascus retrieving its oil wells, which are much needed to relieve pressure on the Syrian economy and the Syrian people. President Trump seems to like the idea, even suggesting that a US oil company could take over those wells and exploit them on behalf of Washington. Part of the revenues would be given to the Kurds!

Nobody knows how this would work: The Syrian Kurdistan is landlocked. The oil would have to transit through Turkey, Syria or Iraq to reach a terminal... Neither Ankara nor Damascus would outright agree and even Baghdad might balk at the idea...

Furthermore, there are now Syrian troops, Russian military personnel and escaped Isis militants roaming through Eastern Syria... A few hundred US servicemen would be awfully exposed there, especially considering their own air support would have to come all the way from Jordan or Iraq! There isn't much in way of US military infrastructure left in Syria as up until a few hours ago, the US Army and USAF were busy bombing their own bases, radar stations and ammo dumps...

It has been confirmed that US troops at the base of Al Tanf in Southern Syria would not withdraw.

Trump has also said today that Washington has never promised to defend the Kurds "until the end of times".

Finally, Russian troops and helos have arrived at the ruined Syrian airbase of Tabqa, near Raqqah. Moscow has also gifted the SAA with an additional 41 Main Battle Tanks has seen in Tartus. And Russian MP patrol North of Manbij between SAA and YPG Kurds on one side and Turkish proxies on the other...

The cease-fire brokered a few days ago is fragile and there are breaches of both sides.

Erdogan and Putin are meeting up, today, to discuss matters.

Syria update.

The Kurdish SDF/YPG have had to withdraw from the border area after the Turkish incursion there threatened to encircle several of their units.

Late, last night, the conflict was turned on its head with the Russians brokering a deal between the Kurds and Damascus: Representatives from the Kurdish administration and YPG met Representatives from the Syrian government and the SAA at the Russian airbase of Hmeimim, for negotiations.

It seems a deal has been reached and the Syrian Army has been invited by the Kurds to move North and secure several border towns ahead of the Turkish advance. This include the towns of Kobane and Manbij.

However the SAA is also massing troops near Raqqah and the Deir-Ezzor province. In the Raqqah province the SAA has just taken over the airbase of Tabqah, which Damascus had lost to ISIS back in 2014.

We do not know if the Kurds have agreed to hand over Raqqah (city) and Deir-Ezzor (province), which are the two most strategic assets they control. There are reports that US forces were instructed not to cooperate with SAA elements and not to allow them passage East of the Euphrates, although we do not have any confirmation of this.

Meanwhile, a Turkish government spokesman said last night that they would attack any SAA unit confronting them and trying to stop them fulfilling their objectives in Syria...

Erdogan and his advisors must have had a busy night: Their incursion in Syria is on the verge of turning from simple anti-insurgency operation to full blown war with Syria... The cost to the Turkish army and economy would be much higher...

And just like that, the Russians and the Syrian Army have become the good guys...

Operation Peace Spring, Washington announced that American forces would withdraw from Northern Syria, ahead of a Turkish military operation.

Danger Close!

US special forces came under fire tonight when Turkish artillery opened fire on the city of Kobane, Northern Syria.

What US military personnel was doing embedded with YPG militiamen along the Turkish border when the White House announced that US forces had been pulled back is unknown.

No casualties have been reported. The US soldiers took cover, weathered the shelling and withdrew once the Turkish batteries ceased fire.
