🔋✨ Found in everything from rechargeable batteries to heart pacemakers, lithium plays a part in most people’s daily lives. But many don’t realize the impact mining and discarding of it can have on our communities. 🌍♻️

📸 Photographer TJ Jenkins took a trip to NextStep Recycling to learn more about safely disposing of lithium batteries and other electronic waste in the Lane County community. 🌿

🌟 Meet Carlie Weigel, our Managing Editor at FLUX magazine! She joined the team two years ago after her high school journalism teacher suggested she “give it a shot.” ✍️ Her favorite past story is her own from last year’s issue of FLUX, “Somebody to Love.” 💖

She loves the collaborative aspect of FLUX. “You’re guaranteed to make a new friend by the time the magazine comes out,” says Carlie. 🤝 Her ultimate dream job post-grad is to teach English abroad. 🌍📚

He joined FLUX out of a deep admiration of the high craftsmanship of previous FLUX issues. ” I never thought my skills would stand up to those who came before me,” says Johnny, “I’m still stunned and honored that I’m a part of the FLUX lineage.” 🤝

Johnny’s current story offers a unique perspective to the “college search.” 🔍 Post-grad, he hopes to work in a role where he can be a resource for those in need. 🙌 “Being a beacon of hope and helpfulness is something I strive for in my life, says Johnny.💡His dream job would be one where he can do that every day.

🚀 Meet one of our Senior Editors Anna Ward!

Anna joined FLUX three years ago out of a love of previous FLUX stories and a desire to explore long form journalism. 📝 Her favorite part of being on the FLUX team? “Collaborating with everyone and coming together to create the magazine!” 🤝 Her previous stories include 2022 edition’s “No Wine to Waste” and 2023’s “Still Standing.”

Her current story, which she describes as “healing after loss,” is a careful exploration of grief in all its forms that’s sure to tug at your heartstrings. Post-grad dreams? Picture Anna penning stories for National Geographic! 🌍✒️
