I am still around and still slacking on coming up with a new Werewolves episode, BUT, on the other podcast I have that requires no research and little preparation I did get to talk about one of my favorite movies again with a couple of my best friends, so that’s fun. Check it out if you’re so inclined!

NEW EPISODE! Join Mike, Travis and Eric as we look back on the 1995 cult-classic, In the Mouth of Madness. Does it still hold up? We also talk about our favorite performances from Winona Ryder and respond to a viewer email about the biggest Oscar snubs of the past 30 years. What about you? Do you read Sutter Kane?

Our opening segment looks at poorly acted roles in excellent films. Michael Jai White, Edward Furlong and Courtney Love are mentioned. Then the 1998 film Out Of Sight is at the core of this episode. Does It Hold Up? That's for you to decide. The show closes with more quarantine viewing recommendations from us along with an email about a possible Donnie Darko theory. Follow our daily film commentaries on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter . Send your emails about Out Of Sight or anything else we discussed today to [email protected] courtesy of Yuri Wong

Thanks for your patience, everybody! After a brief break we are back. Aside from the holidays, we are a two-man operation and everyone got sick. For episode 17, we are taking a look at the Disney animated feature The Black Cauldron. Scary, violent, weird, disjointed, messy, beautiful, and a box office bomb, this movie has a story behind the story. Check it out!

https://anchor.fm/travis-roy/episodes/Ep-17-The-Black-Cauldron-ea791n

Long in production and much anticipated by Disney as their “next Sleeping Beauty,” 1985’s The Black Cauldron instead was received as a dismal flop. By some it is remembered as the movie that almost tanked Disney, or at least the Disney animation studio. But some of us remember it as yet a trea...

After a brief break, A Very Broad History of Werewolves and Other Things is back! In this episode we’re looking at that time Benjamin Franklin was part of a royal French commission investigating the curious practice of Franz Mesmer known as mesmerization. For this simple reason I called this episode “Mesmerization & Benjamin Franklin” but our producer Brennan Storr provided the alternate title “I am learning that a surprising number of historical figures were real horny,” which also works.

https://anchor.fm/travis-roy/episodes/Ep-15-Mesmerization--Benjamin-Franklin-e964i4

At the tail end of the 18th century, Benjamin Franklin was asked by King Louis XVI of France to investigate the practices of Franz Mesmer, who claimed that “animal magnetism” could heal just about anything. Here’s the story of this weird little snippet of world history.

In 1816 Lord Byron and John Polidori spent a summer with Mary Shelley and Percy Bysshe Shelley. While the novel Frankenstein is often best remembered as a product of that summer, another story, The Vampyre, resulted from the contentious collaboration of Byron and Polidori, and fundamentally changed how vampires were imagined in popular culture.

Charley Case was a man of mixed white and African ancestry from the turn of the last century who wore blackface and invented the basics of stand-up comedy decades before anyone else. While he went forgotten for some time, in recent years he has become better remembered for his contributions. This is an episode I’ve very much looked forward to, as we examine and explore this classic vaudevillian and his enduring legacy.

Historians of comedy usually point to Frank Fay as the “original” stand-up comedian, but they’re wrong. In this episode, we look at Fay the comedian and Fay the man. For all the innovations he contributed to the craft of comedy, he was not the first stand-up comedian. He was, however, a fascinating bastard who was on top of the world until his own sh*tty personality took him down. Have a listen!

Philip Seymour Hoffman believed that the less audiences knew about him personally, the more they could appreciate his work. He also was uncomfortable with being celebrated. In this episode, we defy both those wishes and delve into the life and work of one of the most talented artists of our time. Available on Anchor, Spotify, Apple podcasts, and most everywhere else.
