It’s officially that time of year - the NFR is almost here!

Most of the 2023 National Finals Rodeo Barrel Racing Qualifiers are past guests of The Money Barrel - and we thought it would be fun to touch base with them and see how their preparation for this year’s finals are going. Who they are riding, what they had to overcome, what they are preparing most for - we tried to ask the questions that our listeners want to get the answers to! Happy new year futurity friends 🎉🎉 Its the most wonderful time of the year if you run barrels - good luck to all of my friends with their new colts this year !

My favorite annual reminder that -
*You can make an amazing run and still not get a check - Celebrate it!
*You can get by a barrel or blow out of a barrel and still clock and get a check - Keep Going!
*Even superstar jockeys make mistakes and don't always ride perfect. Don't beat yourself up.
*Even rock star horses have bad days and make not so great runs - keep the faith in your horse, your training and your hard work.
*What may seem impossible and out of reach is not - you can make your dreams come true!
*If things are not working, shake it off, make some changes and make your next run with confidence.
*If they aren't ready today - its OK! There is A LOT of year left and it doesn't determine their overall success in their career. Do what's right for your horse!

In the early 2000s if you heard “Man I feel like a woman” come on at an NBHA show, or any mega barrel race you knew to run to the fence because you were about to see the legendary HotShot likely take the lead. HotShot - registered as Nate Shilbar - was purchased out of a sale barn and trained by Peyton Raney who had tremendous success on him including winning the 1997 Rookie of the Year title and an NFR qualification. He won with Peyton until 2001 when Janet Stover leased him for the NFR winning a record setting amount to clinch her the World Championship - a record that would still hold today if his placings were tied to current NFR payouts - and then he went on to secure his spot in the history books with the Steinhoff girls. Jockeyed by Tanya, Tyrney and Taylor Steinhoff for over a decade - HotShot continued to win until his passing in 2011. Tyrney Steinhoff Small took some time to share the legacy of HotShot with us and we know you all will love this one.

Summer Kosel made her splash in the national rodeo scene last year setting the arena record at the Cheyenne Frontier Days. This year she's kept up her winning ways and kept going through the ups and downs to currently be in the top 15! This Badlands Circuit cowgirl and mom of 4 didn't venture much outside her circuit before her main horse, Apollo, had different ideas. They broke their own arena record again this year at Cheyenne and are coming off a win at Sikeston this last weekend and we can't wait to cheer them on in the last 6 weeks of the season!

Sue Smith is a true champion in our sport and has trained some of the best horses we've watched run down the alley. From the futurity world to the NFR, we have seen her win, and in the month of July she won almost $45,000. Winning Ogden, Nampa and Cheyenne with an arena record setting run, Sue is pushing to pursue another NFR qualification this year. We could have multiple podcasts with Sue on all things training, but this conversation really lets us in on her background, the first horses that made such a big impact in her career, the hardships she has had to overcome and some of the highlights of her career with her outstanding mare, Dash's Centerfold.
