Munich, Germany – NFL could have sold 'over three million' Munich tickets

Excitement is building ahead of the first regular-season NFL game on German soil in Munich on Sunday. NFL Germany boss Alexander Steinforth says the league is committed to its number one target market for the long term.

"We could have sold more than three million tickets," says Alexander Steinforth, referring to the next big sporting event at the Allianz Arena in Munich.

But he isn't referring to Bayern Munich's next Bundesliga home game, nor is the German national soccer team in town; Germany's NFL managing director is in fact speaking about the exponential demand for tickets for a different kind of "football" as the United States' National Football League stages its first ever live regular-season game in Germany.

"We have seen great development for the NFL and for American football in Germany over the past couple of years," Steinforth tells us ahead of Sunday's showcase clash between the Seattle Seahawks and Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the Bavarian capital.

"Germany is our number one growth market. [We have] double digit growth when it comes to fandom, when it comes to social reach, everything we are looking at. We are really happy to finally be able to host the first ever regular season game here in Germany, not just for us but even more so for our fans."

Tom Brady in Munich
Anticipation for the match was further boosted when legendary Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady, who continues to push the limits of his own immortality on the field at the age of 45, reversed his decision to retire at the end of last season.

It's not just fans of Brady and the Buccaneers who are looking forward to the, so far, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity; the Seahawks also have an enormous following of their own in Germany. Indeed, the Seattle franchise has the largest German-speaking fan club, with the "German Sea Hawkers" boasting a 1,300-strong membership.

The Seahawks' popularity is due in part to the successes of the famous "Legion of Boom" — the nickname given to The Seahawks' defense during a highly successful period between 2012 and 2015, which coincided with the NFL being shown on free-to-air television in Germany.

"We're playing in this very cool arena [ed.: the Allianz Arena], and it looks amazing in pictures," Brady said on his podcast on Monday, via NFL.com.

"The place is going be rocking and if it's anything like what I see in those German Bundesliga games, this is going to be one of the most epic games that we've ever played in. I'm super excited," he added.

The latest attempt to conquer Europe
Previous attempts to quench European – and particularly German – thirst for live American football included NFL Europe, which operated between 1991 and 2007 before folding after several loss-making seasons. The monetary issues that plagued the European arm of the league were due in part to an inability to reach the masses on television and radio.

However, fans of the sport, often US expatriates and young children introduced to the game by American teachers, developed deep ties to the German teams such as the Rhine Fire from Düsseldorf, the Frankfurt Galaxy and the Hamburg Sea Devils.

When Hamburg native and former player Patrick Esume helped revive professional American football in Germany through the independent European League of Football (ELF) in 2021, he worked with the NFL to ensure that the teams set up in German cities where previous teams had existed retained their former club names to continue the connection with fans.

Amid a changing digital and broadcast landscape, the venture paid off. In its inaugural season, a survey conducted on behalf of Online Marketing Rockstars (OMR) showed that American football was Germany's second most popular sport among 14- to 49-year-olds.

"We have obviously seen that there is a tremendous interest in the sport and the league, and that excites us," says MD Steinforth.

"We are very much aware that there has been historically a very strong federation infrastructure in Germany, probably the strongest in all of Europe, and we are convinced that everything that is good for American football is good not just for the NFL, but also for all other German American football stakeholders.

"It makes everyone in the United States excited to see what the future holds but for now, first and foremost, we are trying to execute our first game to the highest standards possible."

Steinforth: 'We want to get kids playing American football'
Crucially, the NFL is not simply focused on existing interest in American football, but also in ensuring that the passion and knowledge for the game begin at a young age.

In October, former Carolina Panthers defensive end Mike Rucker led a flag football session and local NFL flag football tournament in Frankfurt, which was attended by 90 players from co-ed leagues.

Frankfurt alone has 25 flag football teams, the non-contact version of American football played by youth teams, and Steinforth believes it is one of the most important ways to attract new fans to the game at large.

"The Munich game is one thing, but for us it is trying to be active all year round," he explains. "That is why we are investing a lot of time and effort in our nationwide flag football program. We want to get kids to play American football, we want to make sure it is not just a media product but really something tangible."

The Panthers are one of four teams, alongside the Kansas City Chiefs, the New England Patriots and the Buccaneers, who were assigned a five-year international marketing rights contract for Germany in 2021.

The league has also committed to three more regular-season matches over the next four years: one more in Munich (in 2024) and two in Frankfurt (in 2023 and 2025).

🎃👻🕷🎃Edinburgh, United Kingdom👻Edinburgh Castle🎃🕷👻🎃

Edinburgh Castle is situated on Castle Rock which has served as a military base and royal residence for centuries. However, the edifice that is known as Edinburgh Castle was built during the 12th century by David I, son of Saint Margaret of Scotland.

The tensions between the English and Scottish nearly always centred on Edinburgh Castle. The first major battle was during the late 13th century when Edward I of England attempted to seize the vacant Scottish throne. From 1296 to 1341, the castle bounced from English to Scottish hands several times during the Wars of Scottish Independence.

After this, most of the castle’s reconstruction was overseen by David II. Much of this was undone, following the “Lang Siege.” The year long battle was triggered when Mary, Queen of Scots married James Hepburn, and a surge of rebellion against the union rose up amongst the noblemen of Scotland. Mary was forced to flee to England but loyal supporters held the castle for a further year.

Following, the ‘Union of the Crowns’ on James VI and I accession, the Scottish court departed from Edinburgh to London. The final monarch to reside at the castle was Charles I in 1633. In 1715 the Jacobites came dramatically close to claiming the castle in the same style that Robert the Bruce’s men did over 400 years before by scaling the north facing cliffs. The 1745 rebellion saw the capture of Holyrood Palace but the castle remained unbroken.

Today Edinburgh Castle serves as a military station, is home to the Scottish National War Memorial, the Crown Jewels, Stone of Destiny and is host to the famous Edinburgh Military Tattoo.

London, Belfast – United Kingdom – Queen's coffin arrives at Buckingham Palace as huge crowds line London route
By Angus MacSwan and Padraic Halpin

King Charles and members of the royal family received the coffin of the late Queen Elizabeth at Buckingham Palace on Tuesday, after tens of thousands of people lined the streets in heavy rain to mark its arrival in the British capital.

On a dark night, the well-lit hearse travelled slowly from a nearby airport through London, with crowds stood all along the route, some in the road, others throwing flowers, and many ditching their cars or running from nearby streets to catch a glimpse of the cortege.

As it entered the grounds of the London palace, the police outriders who had led the way stopped to bow their heads.

Charles, who automatically became king on the death of his mother last week, had gathered to received the coffin along with his three siblings, two sons William and Harry, and other senior members of the royal family, a palace spokesperson said.

Elizabeth died peacefully on Thursday in her holiday home at Balmoral Castle, in the Scottish Highlands, at the age of 96, plunging the nation into 10 days of national mourning.

The death of Britain's longest-reigning monarch has prompted hundreds of thousands of people to gather at royal palaces across the country to express their condolences.

Princess Anne, the queen's only daughter, travelled with the coffin, first from the remote castle at Balmoral to Edinburgh, where it was greeted by tens of thousands of mourners, and then as it was brought to London.

"It has been an honor and a privilege to accompany her on her final journeys," Anne said in a statement. "Witnessing the love and respect shown by so many on these journeys has been both humbling and uplifting."

In Edinburgh, a party of bearers from the Royal Air Force carried the casket onto a transporter plane. A kilted honor guard from the Royal Regiment of Scotland stood with fixed bayonets as a regimental band played the national anthem as the plane began to taxi. With that, Scotland bade farewell to the queen.

On Wednesday, the coffin will be taken on a gun carriage as part of a grand military procession to Westminster Hall, where a period of lying in state will begin until the funeral on Monday.

Members of the public will be allowed to walk past the coffin for 24 hours a day until the morning of the funeral, which will be attended by dozens of world leaders including U.S. President Joe Biden.

As part of the highly choreographed days of mourning, King Charles is also travelling to the four parts of the United Kingdom.

Thousands of well-wishers greeted him in Northern Ireland on Tuesday, with handshakes, smiles and warm words as he walked along lines of people crowding the streets outside Hillsborough Castle, the monarch's official residence in the province.

The visit was laden with political significance given Britain's historical record in Ireland and the more recent years of violence in Northern Ireland known as the Troubles.

At a ceremony at Hillsborough Castle, the acting speaker of the Northern Ireland Assembly, Alex Maskey, paid fulsome tribute to the queen.

"Queen Elizabeth was not a distant observer in the transformation and progress of relationships in, and between, these islands," said Maskey, a member of Sinn Fein, which seeks the reunification of Ireland.

"She personally demonstrated how individual acts of positive leadership can help break down barriers and encourage reconciliation," he said.

Maskey, who was interned by the authorities as an Irish Republican Army suspect in the 1970s, said Charles had already shown he understood the importance of reconciliation and was committed to it.

In 2011, Elizabeth became the first British monarch to visit the Irish Republic since independence from London almost a century earlier.

Although a potent symbol of the union, she made powerful gestures of reconciliation for Britain's bloody past in Ireland during the state visit, culminating in a speech in which she expressed regret for centuries of conflict.

A year after her visit to Ireland, the queen, whose cousin Lord Louis Mountbatten was killed by the IRA in 1979, shook the hand of former IRA commander and then Deputy First Minister of Northern Ireland Martin McGuinness in Belfast.

It was a milestone in a peace process that largely brought an end to three decades of violence between pro-British, largely Protestant, factions and nationalists, mostly Catholic, seeking to reunite Ireland and Northern Ireland.

Charles, addressing senior politicians at the castle, said he was committed to the welfare of all the people of Northern Ireland. He also paid tribute to Queen Elizabeth.

"My mother saw Northern Ireland pass through momentous and historic changes. Through all those years, she never ceased to pray for the best of times for this place and for its people, whose stories she knew, whose sorrows our family had felt, and for whom she had a great affection and regard," he said.

SUPPORT FOR CHARLES UP

A new poll, meanwhile, showed Charles has enjoyed a surge in support since he became king.

Now 63% think he will be a good king, a rise of 24 percentage points since March, while 15% believe he will do a bad job, compared with 31% six months ago, the YouGov poll found.

Charles had carved out a role for himself speaking out on issues from climate change to architecture, an at times controversial contrast to his mother, who kept her personal opinions hidden throughout her reign.

Since becoming king, he has repeatedly said he would follow his mother's example.

London, United Kingdom – Stars' farewell to Queen Elizabeth II, from Mick Jagger to Paddington Bear

The world is mourning the death of Queen Elizabeth II, with tributes pouring in from musicians, writers, actors — and even a famous bear.

Beyond her role as a monarch, Queen Elizabeth II was a pop culture icon who met (and knighted) acting and music legends. Many stars have been reacting to the news of her death.

Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger wrote that Queen Elizabeth II had been in his life forever, tweeting that he remembered her from the time she was "a beautiful young lady, to the much beloved grandmother of the nation."

Sir Michael Phillip Jagger was knighted in 2003 at Buckingham Palace for his 40 years of service to popular music.

Another knighted British singer, Elton John, also shared the sentiment that she was "a huge part" of people's lives from childhood on.

The pianist and composer remembered Queen Elizabeth as "an inspiring presence to be around," adding in his tweet that he would "miss her dearly."

A longtime friend of Princess Diana, to whom he dedicated a rewritten version of his hit song "Candle in the Wind" after her death in 1997, Sir Elton John was knighted at Buckingham Palace in 1998.

US singer and actress Barbra Streisand posted a photo of herself shaking hands with the queen. They met at the Royal Film Performance of "Funny Girl" in 1975.

"She was a constant for us all," Streisand tweeted.

US actress and producer Whoopi Goldberg recalled her meeting with the British monarch in 2009. She remembers being "in awe," considering that she was simply "an American kid from the projects" who was suddenly in the "company of the Queen of England."

Bette Midler, who also appeared in the 2009 Royal Variety Performance, the annual British charity event attended by Queen Elizabeth II, noted that she was "steadfast, staunch, and dedicated until the very end," adding in her tweet: "70 years of duty. Unbelievable."

Former Beatle Paul McCartney, who was knighted in 1997, shared a brief tribute to the queen, while also looking ahead to her son's reign on the throne with the words: "Long live The King."

Monthly US fashion and lifestyle magazine Vogue shared a tribute on Instagram. British editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, who in 2017 was appointed Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II for her contributions to fashion and journalism, posted a photo of them together at the fashion show of designer Richard Quinn, where the queen was presenting an award in her name.

Even though Wintour left England for the US long ago, she remained a fan. "The admiration and respect I felt for her has never diminished. I'm not alone in that regard: the queen touched everyone," she wrote.

Also appointed Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire for her services to drama in 2003, Helen Mirren is perhaps the person who came the closest to wearing Queen Elizabeth's shoes. Her portrayals of the British monarch in the 2006 biographical drama movie "The Queen," as well as in the Broadway version of the film, were crowned with awards.

She wrote on Instagram that she was "proud to be an Elizabethan," describing the queen as "the epitome of nobility."

Meanwhile, Peter Morgan, screenwriter of "The Queen" and of the successful Netflix series "The Crown," has said he expects filming of season six of the historical drama will pause, "out of respect."

"'The Crown' is a love letter to her and I've nothing to add for now, just silence and respect," he told Hollywood news site Deadline in an email. The series covers the reign of Queen Elizabeth II, from her wedding to Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, in 1947, up into the 21st century.

Elizabeth had also developed a special relationship with a much-beloved fictional character from children's literature, Paddington Bear.

In a video for her Platinum Jubilee in June, they shared tea together and revealed to each other that they both loved marmalade sandwiches. The queen said she always had her own supply in her iconic handbag.

Paddington's tweet, one of the most popular tributes on Twitter, simply repeats a touching line from that video: "Thank you, Ma'am, for everything."

London, United Kingdom – Queen Elizabeth II has died according to Buckingham Palace

The UK's Queen Elizabeth II has died aged 96 at her Balmoral residence in Scotland.

"The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon," Buckingham Palace announced at 6:30 p.m. local time in the UK.

Britain's longest-serving monarch was taken ill earlier on Thursday, having canceled an appointment with the Privy Council on Wednesday.

Her family members that were not already present in Balmoral rushed to the scene.

Buckingham Palace's statement said that her heir, Prince Charles, now the king, and his wife Camilla, the queen consort, would remain at Balmoral and would return to London in the morning.

Members of the royal family arrive at Balmoral
A convoy of cars carrying Prince William, Prince Andrew, Prince Edward and his wife Sophie arrived at Balmoral Castle a short while ago where the queen is under medical supervision.

The plane carrying the members of the royal family arrived at Aberdeen Airport before moving on to the royal residence.

Prince Charles and his wife Camilla along with his sister Princess Anne, were already in Scotland.

Prince Harry is understood to be traveling to Scotland alone and has canceled a planned appearance at a charity event.

Wellwishers gather at Buckingham Palace
People have started gathering outside Buckingham Palace, some of them bearing bouquets of flowers, following statements relating to the health of the queen, with Londoners and other visitors alike wishing the monarch to "Get well soon."

"Everybody is really stressed about it, we have had her for 70 years so we need to digest the whole thing because it suddenly happened," London resident Sharon Gove told Reuters news agency.

"I work close by and I heard on the news about her majesty’s failing health so I was concerned and it led me to come to Buckingham Palace, to be at the heart of the monarchy," said Alexander Caplan who works nearby.

Buckingham Palace is the primary residence of the royal family, although the queen has not been there since early June.

No plans for PM to travel to Scotland — report
Reuters news agency reported on Thursday that there were no current plans for British Prime Minister Liz Truss to travel to Scotland, citing her spokesman. Further comment on the matter was reportedly declined.

Meanwhile other British political leaders have been wishing the monarch well. First Minister of Scotland Nicola Sturgeon said: "All of us are feeling profoundly concerned at reports of Her Majesty's health. My thoughts and wishes are with the Queen and all of the Royal Family at this time."

First Minister of Wales Mark Drakeford expressed his wishes. "Concerned to hear the news from Buckingham Palace. I send my best wishes to Her Majesty and her family on behalf of the people of Wales," Drakeford said.

Former prime ministers offer thoughts
Former British Prime Ministers Tony Blair and David Cameron both expressed their concern over her health.

Blair said: "It is deeply concerning to hear today's news from Buckingham Palace. My thoughts and prayers are with Her Majesty The Queen and her family at this worrying time."

Cameron said: "Deeply concerned by the news this afternoon from Buckingham Palace. I send my heartfelt thoughts and prayers to Her Majesty The Queen and the Royal Family at this worrying time."

Royal flight landing at Aberdeen airport
At least one aircraft carrying members of the royal family has landed at Aberdeen Airport, reportedly carrying the Duke of Cambridge the Duke of York, the Earl and the Countess of Wessex.

Local media reported that seven members of the royal family are onboard the flight, which departed from the Northolt Royal Airforce Base near London.

At least one other plane has departed the RAF base.

Family rushes to her side
Her eldest son and heir, Prince Charles, traveled to Balmoral following the news, joined by his wife Camilla and his son Prince William. The Queen's other children — Anne, Andrew and Edward — were also headed to the castle.

And grandson Prince Harry and his wife Meghan were traveling to Balmoral, a spokesperson for the couple said.

Such a gathering of the House of Windsor, outside of events such as Christmas or Easter or major public events, is extremely rare.

Queen canceled virtual meeting on Wednesday
On Wednesday, the monarch canceled a virtual meeting of her Privy Council after being advised to rest.

She has been suffering from "episodic mobility problems" since the end of last year, according to Royal officials, and contracted COVID-19 in February. In October, Elizabeth spent a night in hospital.

The monarch, Britain's Head of State, has increasingly handed over official duties to Prince Charles, and other royal family members.

She has recently missed other high-profile events, including this year's State Opening of Parliament and the Platinum Jubilee Concert. Her husband of 70 years, Prince Philip, died in April of last year.

Public figures offer thoughts
Prime Minister Liz Truss, who was appointed by the Queen on Tuesday, said she was thinking of her, in a post on Twitter.

"My thoughts — and the thoughts of people across our United Kingdom — are with Her Majesty The Queen and her family at this time," she wrote.

The speaker of the British parliament said Queen Elizabeth was in the house's thoughts. "I know I speak on behalf of the entire House when I say we send all the best wishes to her Majesty the Queen," Lindsay Hoyle said in the House of Commons.

Opposition Labour leader Keir Starmer said: "Along with the rest of the country, I am deeply worried by the news from Buckingham Palace this afternoon."

The Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby, who is the highest-ranking cleric in the Church of England, which is headed by the Queen, said she was in his prayers.

"May God's presence strengthen and comfort Her Majesty, her family, and those who are caring for her at Balmoral," he said in a post on Twitter.

Queen placed under medical supervision earlier on Thursday
The UK's Queen Elizabeth II was placed under medical supervision over concerns for her health earlier on Thursdsay, the royal family announced on Thursday.

"Following further evaluation this morning, The Queen's doctors are concerned for Her Majesty's health and have recommended she remain under medical supervision," the family said in a statement.

"The Queen remains comfortable and at Balmoral [Castle]" — the Scottish estate where she has spent the summer.

The palace did not provide further details on the seriousness of her condition. She is 96 years old.

London, United Kingdom – Remembering Lady Di, the 'people's princess'

Be it a Banksy artwork or an Elton John song, Princess Diana's legend permeates through pop culture — even 25 years after her death. Her relatability could be key.

"It is a point to remember that of all the ironies about Diana, perhaps the greatest was this: A girl given the name of the ancient goddess of hunting was, in the end, the most hunted person of the modern age."

It is hard to forget these hard-hitting lines that were part of the stirring — sometimes vitriolic — tribute delivered by Charles, 9th Earl Spencer, at his older sister's funeral 25 years ago.

Diana, Princess of Wales died at the age of 36 in a car crash on August 31, 1997, in Paris together with her then partner, Dodi Al-Fayed, and the vehicle's driver, Henri Paul. Only her severely injured bodyguard, Trevor Reese-Jones, survived the crash.

While her death itself sent shockwaves worldwide, it was the circumstances surrounding it that prompted an outpouring of grief — and fury.

Once deemed "the world's most photographed woman," Lady Di was hounded by paparazzi as her driver sped through a tunnel at the moment of the crash. Tabloid media were blamed for her death, and faced the wrath of not just her brother but her two sons, Princes William and Harry and the public at large.

However, in 1999, French investigators held driver Paul solely responsible for the crash, as he was found to have been driving under the influence of both alcohol and prescription drugs.

In 2008, the jury at a British inquest returned a verdict of unlawful killing through grossly negligent driving by Paul and the following paparazzi vehicles.

Tough relationship with media
Princess Diana also attracted media attention — be it through her fashion choices; the best-selling tell-all book authored by Andrew Morton in 1992; or her 1995 interview with journalist Martin Bashir that recently saw the BBC being criticized for "falling short of high standards of integrity and transparency."

It was during this interview with Bashir for BBC's Panoramathat Diana famously said: "There were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded" — referring to the extramarital affair of the heir to the throne, Prince Charles, and his now wife, Camilla Parker Bowles.

Besides that, she spoke of her own affairs, her bulimia and her attempts to take her own life due to the stress of rigid palace life and protocols.

Yet, she remained overwhelmingly beloved among the public, probably because she led, to some extent, a life that diverse people could relate to: dutiful yet wronged wife, loving and devoted mother, glamorous fashionista, down-to-earth royal, pop music fan and avid dancer, and compassionate champion of the homeless and the sick.

Her bold decision to buck royal protocol by going gloveless and shaking the hand of an unidentified AIDS patient in 1987 is described by Insider.com as "one of her finest humanitarian moments." She would go on to utilize her celebrity to champion diverse causes — from her advocacy against landmines to promoting the arts.

Thus, she cemented her status as a pop culture icon. And the minutiae of her life have since provided fodder for numerous retellings of Diana's life in the form of documentaries, interviews, films, an award-winning Netflix series, and even a widely-panned musical.

Queen of hearts
After she was pronounced dead on August 31, 1997, a visibly shaken Tony Blair, who was then British Prime Minister, spoke to the media in which he introduced the term the "people's princess."

"You know how difficult things were for her from time to time, I'm sure we could only guess at, but the people everywhere — not just here in Britain, everywhere — they kept faith with Princess Diana," Blair said. "They liked her, they loved her, they regarded her as one of the people. She was the 'people's princess.' And that's how she will stay, how she will remain, in our hearts and in our memories, forever."

Born Diana Frances Spencer, she gained several titles after marrying Prince Charles, but once they divorced, she lost her HRH title which she was reportedly upset about. It also meant that she would never become the queen of England.

However, she stated how she'd like to be recognized in her now infamous Panorama interview: "I'd like to be a queen of people's hearts, in people's hearts."

That perhaps explains the almost 2.5 billion people who had tuned in to watch her funeral 25 years ago, and why she remains a beguiling subject of pop culture to this day.
