“i’m not good enough.”

after finishing my DBT skills program with TheraHive, I began EMDR to help me work through some trauma I’ve been holding for a few years.

the trauma has instilled in me that I am not good enough and that I don’t deserve good things. I am constantly looking for signs in everything that reminds me I am unworthy and undeserving of success, love, and joy. that I am weak, and not strong enough.

my first EMDR session was very intense but I already feel a bit better!!! I am working at the cafe all weekend, but I’m really excited to finish recording my experience with it and posting a podcast episode about it.

cheers, warriors 💜
and happy BPD awareness month.

ICYMI: NEW EPISODE 💜
Moving Away From Black and White Thinking

In all kinds of relationships, we can often show a form of non-Dialectical thinking, where we go between Idealizing and Devaluing people. This is just an automatic response we have, and both idealization and devaluation are coping responses to a fear of abandonment.
In this episode, I talk about how Dialectics come in to combat this type of thinking that people with BPD so often struggle with.

NEW EPISODE 💜
How Strongly Should I Ask or Say No?

In this week of TheraHive's course, we'll go over two DBT tools: FAST, and The Dime Game.

FAST is a skill you can use in an interaction where your self-respect should be prioritized. It stands for Fair; Apology-Free; Stick to your values; Truthful.

The Dime Game is a great tool you can refer back to any time, especially with issues where you're unsure who to go to for advice on the situation.

ICYMI: NEW EPISODE 💜
It’s not what you say that can be effective, it’s HOW you say it.

The GIVE skill in DBT is all about the Relationship Effectiveness objective when it comes to interpersonal situations, and it’s meant to help you leave that situation with the other person thinking well of you.

Do you wanna be RIGHT, or do you wanna be EFFECTIVE?

Interpersonal Effectiveness for BPD, Part 2: How to Ask For What Your Need

In Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), the fourth and final module - known as Interpersonal Effectiveness - teaches you skills to communicate effectively, set boundaries, and maintain relationships while achieving your personal goals.

This week, TheraHive’s Interpersonal Effectiveness course is gonna teach me about the DEARMAN skill, which is one of my personal favourite skills. I’m REALLY excited to share my experiences with this part of the course.

DEARMAN is an acronym that stands for Describe, Express, Assert, Reinforce, Mindful, Appear confident, and Negotiate.

If you wanna do this course too, use QUIETBPD25 to get a 25% discount on your tuition deposit. This code is valid for the first 20 people!

ICYMI - NEW EPISODE 💜
Interpersonal Effectiveness for BPD, Part 1: Clarifying Your Goals!

In Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), the fourth and final module - known as Interpersonal Effectiveness - teaches you skills to communicate effectively, set boundaries, and maintain relationships while achieving your personal goals.

This is my favourite module by far with DBT because it’s helped me significantly with conflict resolution, and empowered me to ask for my needs without feeling guilty, without letting my emotions make things worse, and without burning bridges.

Back in Season 1, I had interviewed Dr. Jesse Finkelstein on his insights about DBT. It was such a fun chat that Jesse and the team over at TheraHive offered to let me try out this module for free with them. I thought, yes! I'll do it, and this way, I can share my experience with the course and all of my DBT reflections with you.

Hi Facebook!

Quiet, Not Silent is a podcast dedicated to exploring recovery while living with Borderline Personality Disorder.

I'm Avery (they/them), and I live with quiet (discouraged) BPD. I was diagnosed with BPD in 2019 at 24 years old. After reading about Millon's subtypes, I was finally able to understand the way I had been coping with this mental health condition. The subtypes have been an effective describing tool for many people with BPD to better explain their own experiences and coping mechanisms. After all, no two people experience BPD the exact same way. We are not a monolith.

In solo episodes, I explore different topics related to quiet BPD (and BPD in general), like dissociation, internalized shame, chronic emptiness, etc. Guest episodes will include conversations with amazing people I've met along my path. We talk about our experiences with BPD and about topics related to recovery: Self-love, coping skills, relationships, support systems, and different therapy modalities, to name a few.

Since 2021, I have been compelled to break the silence that stigma traps us in, and speak up on my experiences with this hidden presentation of BPD.

So, here I am: quiet, not silent.
