New Episode 🎙️

Sensitive Subject Alert: This week we will be talking about perinatal loss, which affects nearly 1 in 4 pregnancies. Despite this, only a small number of families who have experienced loss receive routine follow-up support…and this loss can be one of the most profound losses that a family can experience, having a lifelong impact. Loss can include miscarriage, ectopic or molar pregnancy, stillbirth, neonatal death and abortion for any reason. Feelings of loss can also be extreme in cases of various infertility issues. The grieving process can be extremely complicated depending on many factors. We would love to hear from you if you have experienced any of these types of losses and are willing to share.

Our discussion with Leslie Gunnerson, RN and perinatal loss specialist, focuses on pregnancy loss and infant death.  While sidestepping difficult conversations about death may often seem like a kindness, avoidance contributes to feelings of isolation, depression, and unresolved grief.  The loss of...

“Body chemistry associated with labor and delivery . . . brings mothers and babies into intimate contact, where the mere touch of a baby’s lips to the ni**le inspires a cascade of love hormones that bless both mother and baby. These hormones trigger expulsion of the placenta, help close and heal the uterus, reduce postpartum bleeding, and facilitate the initial flow of priceless colostrum and a litter later, mother’s milk itself.”

Did you know that fear and the perceived sense of loss of control is the number one cause of a traumatic birth experience? Up to 35 % of women in the United States reported that their births were traumatic… and it has nothing to do with the events surrounding the birth or where they gave birth - it has to do with the feeling of loss of control.

Evidence shows that “Pregnant women who undergo mindfulness training report that when they become aware of and learn to relate differently to the negative thoughts that surround their intense physical sensations, they cease to be overwhelmed by feeling unable to cope with the pain, and less fearful of losing control.”

Mindfulness practice during pregnancy reduces the risk of unnecessary interventions, postpartum depression and preterm birth… among many other benefits. Babies are calmer, cry less, and breastfeed better.

"Mindfulness is about letting go of the past and focusing on right now. It’s about accepting whatever is going on, rather than trying to change it or ignore it. Mindful parenting does not mean being a “perfect parent” and is not something you can fail at. It is not easy and it takes practice, Managing our own emotions and behaviors is the key to teaching kids how to manage theirs."
When you start practicing mindfulness during pregnancy, you are already teaching your unborn child how to manage their emotions through hormones going through the placenta into the developing baby.
Take time to listen to one of our first episodes with Dr. Roger Olson, a neurobehavioral child psychologist talking about how mindfulness affects your child's emotional and behavioral health...and how to grow more peaceful brains!

New Episode 🎤

In her book Transformed by Birth, the guest of this episode, Britta Bushnell talks about how “rites of passage are meaningful transformational experiences that alter a person’s knowing of who they are.” These experiences take people “out of their familiar identity of daily life and thrusts them into something new, often stressful, and possibly threatening.” Does this sound like our whole world right now? We are all experiencing uncomfortable change, increased stress and a whole new way of being. Adding pregnancy, birth and parenting to this may leave you feeling utterly helpless and lost. In this episode, we talk with Britta about the amazing transformation that takes place when we lean into and embrace the uncertainty, the fear, the pain and the unknown. When we are willing to ‘deconstruct’ our known way of being and enter the chrysalis of chaos, we have the potential to emerge transformed. This process is almost always messy, scary, chaotic and uncomfortable, but completely worth it. Please listen, share and leave a review!

Our “Why”

Holly says: “After years of observing thousands of people during pregnancy and birth and how parents bond with their unborn and newborn babies, I was convinced that peace on earth begins before and during birth. More than just a philosophy of empowering people to have a powerful and positive birth experience, the approach that I have taken in my work as a ‘birth activist’ is to bring information to as many people as possible about the importance of gestation and birth on the development of the type of brain that supports an environment of peace. When birthers focus on peace and love during their pregnancy and birth through mindful awareness of the state of their own being, the developing baby's system is also being wired for peace, joy and contentment that can last a lifetime.”

Jayme says: “I believe that we are born equipped with the strength to grow our babies and birth them peacefully. As the years go by, we become jaded with negative language surrounding birth. For some reason people think it’s a badge of honor to tell a pregnant person the most horrifying stories possible! By the time we are ready to get pregnant and start our families, our minds are full of fear surrounding childbirth. We seek out classes, books, anything we can get our hands on to unlearn these thoughts. What if we changed the way we described pregnancy, birth and parenting? If we used positive language, trusted our instincts and dug deep into the root of who we are? It is truly a gift to experience this journey! Yes, there is a bit of pain, but there is so much joy! If you allow yourself to surrender by trusting your body and your mind you will see that birth in not about pain or a curse, but it is a transformative experience that you will be grateful you got to experience.”
