Tom Hardy in Band of Brothers
Tom Hardy is 44 years old today, but 20 years ago, he had his first TV appearance in the HBO mini-series Band of Brothers. Hardy made his one episode appearance in Episode 9 of the series, titled Why We Fight, with his debut on screen was actually being butt naked as Private Janovec is caught while sleeping with a German woman. He also has another funny scene, shown above, which displays the cluelessness of the young soldier, who showed up at the battlefront for WWII as it was coming to an end.

The world’s most lethal odd couple – bodyguard Michael Bryce (Ryan Reynolds) and hitman Darius Kincaid (Samuel L. Jackson) – are back on another life-threatening mission. Still unlicensed and under scrutiny, Bryce is forced into action by Darius’s even more volatile wife, the infamous international con artist Sonia Kincaid (Salma Hayek). As Bryce is driven over the edge by his two most dangerous protectees, the trio get in over their heads in a global plot and soon find that they are all that stand between Europe and total chaos. Joining in the fun and deadly mayhem are Antonio Banderas as a vengeful and powerful madman and Morgan Freeman as… well, you’ll have to see.
#OnThisDay in 1894, it was the 1st public showing of Thomas Edison's kinetoscope, which was the forerunner to the motion picture film projector. The motion picture above is a recording of Fred Ott sneezing, and is courtesy of the Library of Congress (@librarycongress). This video was also the first U.S. copyright ever given for an identifiable motion picture.
The Kinetoscope was invented by Thomas A. Edison and William Dickson of the United States in 1891. In it, a strip of film was passed rapidly between a lens and an electric light bulb while the viewer peered through a peephole. Behind the peephole was a spinning wheel with a narrow slit that acted as a shutter, permitting a momentary view of each of the 46 frames passing in front of the shutter every second. The result was a lifelike representation of persons and objects in motion. At first, Edison regarded his invention as an insignificant toy. He secured a U.S. patent, but neglected to obtain patents in other countries; in 1894, when the Kinetoscope was finally publicly exhibited on Broadway, in New York City, it created an immediate sensation. Several Kinetoscopes sold in Europe formed the basis of the first apparatus used to project motion-picture film.

Happy 51st Birthday to Peter Dinklage!!!
It has been 20 years since Requiem for a Dream (2000) premiered at Cannes and we wanted to talk about how its editing is some of the best in cinematic history.
Darren Aronofsky shot the movie as a sequence of extremely short shots to get a sense of overwhelming addiction and loss of control. An average 100 minute movie contains 600-700 cuts, but this film contains over 2000.
The quick cut editing of this film works as a means of unifying the stories of the four main characters, played by Ellen Burstyn, Jared Leto, Marlon Wayans and Jennifer Connelly. Every action that one takes in turn affects the other, and without the fast-paced editing, this consequence would be lost on the audience.
This marriage of form and function is key to why the film works so well: Aronofsky figured out how to depict the vicious patterns of addiction in a visceral, disorienting way, and more than that, he forces the viewer to reflect on what they might be obsessed with and what patterns they are living, by subtly signposting how much of our lives consist of repetition.
