The top two U.S. Quarter Horse trainers by earnings in 2024, Toby Keeton and Juan Diaz Jr., have been summarily suspended by the Texas Racing Commission as of Jan. 30, 2025. Each trainer allegedly has “multiple positive tests” pending for the experimental bronchodilator “carmoterol” during the Lone Star Park Quarter Horse meet.
Meanwhile, the California Horse Racing Board revealed four positive tests for carmoterol in horses trained by another top Quarter Horse conditioner, Monty Arrossa, including G1 winner American Dreamin. Those positives have yet to be adjudicated, but an investigation is ongoing.
The National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences describes carmoterol as rapid onset and potent compared to other similar bronchodilators, and also describes its beta-2 agonist action as “long-acting.” Carmoterol was in clinical trials prior to 2010, but never made it to market.

Wilfrido Montano has been permanently banned from holding a trainer’s license in West Virginia following a dozen animal cruelty charges, according to WRTF.com.
In December, he was charged with six counts of withholding medical treatment and six counts of withholding food and water in Hancock County. Montano has pleaded not guilty.
On January 17, stewards issued a ruling, imposing a $5,000 fine, revoking all his licenses, and banning him from commission grounds. Montano hasn’t trained a horse since December 4, 2024.

Thoroughbred trainer and owner Sean Alfortish offered to pay someone to murder a cooperating witness in an insurance fraud case, a Louisiana man admitted in federal court in New Orleans on Thursday while pleading guilty to three felonies, including his role in the killing of that witness, Cornelius Garrison.
Although Alfortish has not been charged with Garrison’s murder, he remains in federal custody without bond. He faces felony charges of conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud, obstruction of justice, and witness tampering related to the case.

At a Jan. 8 court hearing in New Orleans, trainer Sean Alfortish’s attorney agreed to keep him in custody while awaiting trial on fraud, witness tampering, and obstruction charges, according to CBS affiliate WWL-TV Louisiana. Prosecutors were prepared to present evidence linking Alfortish to the 2020 murder of Cornelius Garrison, a cooperating witness in the Operation Sideswipe insurance fraud case. Alfortish has not been charged in connection with the homicide.
Alfortish, a former lawyer and Louisiana HBPA president, was disbarred and sentenced to three years in prison after pleading guilty to fraud involving misused HBPA funds and a rigged election to stay in power. After his release, he was relicensed in Louisiana and began training in 2022, following over 20 years as a horse owner.
Since 2022, Sean Alfortish has recorded 23 wins from 111 starts as a trainer, earning just over $460,000.
