"My name is Eric Bailey and I am a writer for the Tulsa World covering University of Oklahoma athletics. I started at the Tulsa World on Sept. 20, 2004, a day I will never forget. I reported for work at my hometown newspaper at 9 a.m. on that Monday and my father Richard Bailey passed away about 14 hours later. He was so proud that I was coming home after spending eight years at the Springfield (Mo.) News-Leader. He played a part in my hiring. He hand delivered my resume to the Tulsa World and was the first person I called when I was offered the job. Newspapers were important to him. I’ve dedicated my job to him, my mom and my entire family. I grew up in Tulsa (Disney Elementary, Foster Middle School, East Central High School) and loved reading the newspaper as a kid. While a freshman at Haskell Indian Nations University, my English professor challenged me to become a good writer. While a junior at the University of Kansas, my Reporting I professor told me I needed to seriously consider journalism as a career. She is my biggest supporter and I still keep in touch with her more than 30 years later. Sports also surrounds my personal life. My 15-year-old daughter plays softball at Owasso High School. I also coach her travel-softball team, which is filled with girls who are excellent at the sport. Hanging around them keeps me young. It’s always rewarding to provide leadership and encouragement to the next generation. Not many people are blessed to say they have a job they love. Every day I get to do that and it's something I do not take for granted."
