What do you think about “gender”? We talked about it with an international student!

We hear the word “gender” more and more in the news.

In this article, we discussed with international students who are living (or have lived) in Japan about their perceptions of gender through their lives in Japan.

At YOMOYAMA, we would like to deepen our understanding of gender by discussing and getting to know each other’s thoughts.

https://yomoyama.life/archives/1856

Have you ever looked at Japanese people using SNS, and feel a little bit different?

Since I moved to Japan, I have been connecting with Japanese friends through SNS a lot, especially Instagram. I realized that the way they use SNS is different. At first, I thought it might just be because of each country’s different cultures. But seems like my other international friends think that the Japanese way of using SNS is so unique too. So today, I will show you some characteristics points of the Japanese way of using SNS from my own observation.

Here are some of the tips, a summarization of ways of saving money in Japan and incorporated my own experiences, that might be helpful to you.

My history as a Graduate Student in Japan, not being physically in Japan.

Today I would like to share a little bit about my experience as a master’s student in Japan attending classes virtually. Please note that this is my own personal experience, and I can’t not speak for all the other students that went trough the same situation.

I could write many pages about this, but I will spare you the smallest details. So, I decided to split this story into three important phases: the excitement, the doubt and the hope respectively.

Nishio is simple, tranquil, and aesthetic. Unlike the infamous tourist destinations in Japan, it offers a suburban vibe that is perfect for escaping the exuberant lives of our.

Here I would engulf myself in the local arts and inspiring personal stories, and enjoy the weekend with my closest friends.

From a perspective of a people from Thailand, where the daily expenses are super cheap.

If we talk about Japan, especially Tokyo, you might think that the daily expenses here will be super high, right? And every product includes the tax, which even top up the price more. “I won’t never ever be able to live in Tokyo. Thailand things are so cheap, I can’t imagine how much I have to pay for a meal in Tokyo.” I have thought like that, before I actually moved to Tokyo.

However, in fact, a lot of things in Tokyo are much cheaper than what I have imagined. And my thought was completely changed after spending sometimes here.

Here I’m going to show you why Tokyo is not that expensive:

Strawberry Cheesecake Kit Kat, anyone? Or would you like a swig of grape-flavoured Fanta? Or perhaps you’re the adventurous type that goes for Wasabi Doritos?
Whatever your tastes be, Japan has got you covered. It boasts of a formidable variety of snacks — from popular ones like everybody’s favourite Pocky to the weirdest kinds like curry-flavoured ice-cream (yeah, it is a real thing).
However, unlike your regular Japanese snack blog, this one is not about the many Kit Kat flavours. Today’s a special piece dedicated to our Indian readers. We’ve compiled a list of some Japanese snacks that are sure to tickle your desi taste buds!
(Our non-Indian friends must also keep reading! There is some oishii stuff down there ) Without further ado, minnasan, let’s dig in!

It is expected that more foreigners are coming to Japan for jobs and study because Japan is like a dreamland with high living standard, social security and advanced welfare system. However, increasing tax burdens and higher living costs are besetting not only international students but also foreign workers. The limit of 28 hours of part-time job every week with minimum wage of 800-1000 yen per hour is seemingly causing financial stress on students who are struggling to pay tuition fees, taxes, rent and daily foods.

But don't worry too much! There is a plethora of ways to save some pennies in Japan. Let's find out how Japanese and foreign students are actually tightening their belt.

"There is always light at the end of the tunnel"

The abandoned tunnels in Hyogo prefecture are adventurous place for those looking for thrilling experience on weekends. The railway, six tunnels and three vibrant orange iron bridges, remain almost unchanged since last time they were in use. In this blog, it is my pleasure to unfold my story on a spooky walk through these dark tunnels.

Su***de” has become a social issue in Japan. We talked about it with some international students studying in Japan!

In Japan, there are approximately 21,000 people who die by su***de every year (as of 2020). The su***de rate among the younger generation is particularly high compared to other countries. This time, YOMOYAMA members (international students studying in Japan and YOMOYAMA editorial staff members who were born and raised in Japan) talked about “su***de”.

Perhaps you have heard the famous quote: “Mt. Fuji in the east and Daisen in the west”. Mt. Fuji is considered the iconic symbol of Japan, which is located in Kanto area in the east, meanwhile, Mt. Daisen, which is less renowned than Mt. Fuji, is a symbolic sacred mountain of Tottori prefecture as well as Chuugoku region in the west. Before embarking on the trip, I was frankly scared of hiking alone in the dark in an unfamiliar trail. It is risky to go trekking without any support from my partner because night hiking is something I had never done before, so I had absolutely no experience in it. I made my way to the peak in the middle of darkness. But, it turned out that my plan was fouled up!

Where is Mt. Daisen? &nbs... Mt. Daisen is selected as one of Japan's 100 Famous Mountains and is symbolic sacred mountain.

RAMADAN AND EID AL-FITR IN JAPAN 2021:ENTHUSIASM MET WITH COVID-19 FEARS

Muslims around the world had been expecting the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan by almost mid-April to start their fasting and spiritual journey in a month that has many spectacular aspects and local-specific traditions and culture.

Not different from their brothers and sisters in faith, Muslims in Japan -both nationals and residents- had been longing for Ramadan with all the practices, good deeds, charity giving, sharing food, and the sense of a community.

Ramadan in Japan used to be a very nice portrait of multiculturism and diversity. Many activities used to be held by the Muslim community and also for them -by Japanese officials and governorates- like the series of “Iftar Party” events that had been held by the governor of Tokyo since 2005; this series and its positive atmosphere were crowned by the latest one in May 2019 where Ambassadors and Representatives of 47 Islamic Countries in Tokyo were invited, and the governor of Tokyo, Mrs. Yuriko Koike, announced that she will do her best to let Muslims experience best stay in Tokyo, especially during Tokyo Olympic 2020, without any worries.

However, all of this changed with the outbreak of COVID-19 later that year; a lot of restrictions and concerns reshaped the experience of Ramadan to all Muslims broadly including the Muslim community in Japan.

What are Ramadan and Eid Al-Fitr anyways? What were the usual ceremonies and traditions of it in the Muslim world? How did the Muslim community use to experience them in Japan? And what changed with COVID-19? Let’s address these aspects and more!

Have you ever noticed funny scrawls/posters that look like children's drawings✍️🎨 inside a train, a metro, etc.

They are called Heta Uma. Although “Heta Uma” painting looks technically poor (dirty color, unstable stroke, bad description) you just cannot seem to imitate its exquisite charms.

The success of a “Heta Uma” painting relies on its ability to make people laugh first then think. Let's take a look at some Heta Uma paintings in this article!

https://yomoyama.life/archives/1034

Heta Uma is a painting trend which surged rapidly in the 80s. There is no exact word in English which can translate the meaning of Heta Uma. In Japanese, this word is a collocation of two separate words “Heta” (meaning bad, not good, ugly) and “Uma” (meaning good, sophisticated, excellent). ...

It cannot be denied that disposable chopsticks🥢 are convenient and handy in many cases.

However, they have become controversial since the overuse of those chopsticks causes harm to human’s health, deforestation as well as the environment.🌏😢

It also strains the garbage disposal system of Japan♻️♻️. Long term intake of harmful chemical residues such as sulfur dioxide and hydro peroxide would definitely threaten human’s health and is likely to cause cancer. It is urgent to reduce the number of disposable chopsticks consumed annually and implement feasible measures to recycle them efficiently.
