'Joker: Folie à Deux' Review: The Sequel No One Asked For? 🎭
Warner Bros. took a bold leap with Joker: Folie à Deux, but the risky pivot from psychological thriller to courtroom musical fantasy has left fans divided and critics unimpressed. This sequel had high expectations, especially considering the 2019 Joker’s massive success. But rather than building on that gritty, intense narrative, Folie à Deux swapped drama for an experimental twist, and unfortunately, it’s a shift that audiences just didn’t embrace.
💸 From Box Office to PVOD Woes
The numbers don’t lie. Joker: Folie à Deux left theaters with a mere $58 million domestic haul and just $204 million worldwide—well short of its $300 million budget. Following its PVOD release, it hasn’t managed to turn things around, landing in fourth place on both iTunes and Fandango. In contrast, Beetlejuice reclaimed the top spot, proving Warner Bros. can still captivate audiences… just not with Joker this time around.
🎼 Did the Genre Shift Doom the Sequel?
Much of Folie à Deux’s trouble stems from its genre-bending experiment, shifting away from the gritty Scorsese-inspired vibe of the original to a more theatrical style with courtroom drama and musical sequences. Some fans were excited for an innovative twist, but many felt this new direction didn’t fit the Joker they knew. With a 33% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, critics weren’t kind either. Collider’s Martin Tsai summed it up: “A middling courtroom tale and half-baked musical is not the kind of victory lap anyone wants.”
