Now that you’ve taken sometime to settle into the new year, get back to writing! Set aside time to develop your story.

Life happens to everyone. Try not to allow the distractions drown out your vision. Instead let it inspire your creativity.

What about the things unfolding around you relates to the story you’re writing? Can you see character traits in the people you engage with daily? That one person you cannot stand…probably has a note worthy trait for a good antagonist! 👹

Everything is inspiring if you pay attention! A vital key to a great story is character development. Obstacles and struggles are one of many things that make for a good character. Can I help a writer out?! Here are some things that make for a bad story or script.

1. You didn’t research the topic you wrote about! And yes we can tell you don’t know what you’re talking about 🙄

2. We don’t know who the hell the protagonist is! Too many characters, useless subplots, or just a lot going on that doesn’t develop or drive your character throughout the story.

3. Clichéd dialogue! Come on guys… let’s not be cheesy or predictable! You don’t have much paper real estate. Use it wisely!

4. Unreal action or reactions. Even your fictional characters have to be realistic and relatable! Periodt!

Plan - Think ahead! Write down your goals, vision, where you plan to be in a certain amount of time! This is very important especially when writing!

Prepare- after you’re clear on your goals, vision and destination it’s time to prepare! Preparation is vital to executing! Especially when writing! This is where you breakdown and outline your story as much as you can! Dissect your characters, take your time creating a realistic atmosphere for your characters to thrive in.

Then you want to map out every major plot point and subplot that will happen! Iron out the kinks, fall into and climb out of plot holes before diving into the script!

Execute- last but not least, write the script! Now that you’re definite about your vision, you’ve outlined your story to the bones…. Now you’re able to effectively execute your script!

If you’ve followed the steps in order, not skipping around, you should have little to no problems while drafting your script!

Plan. Prepare. Execute. This does not just apply to writing! It’s life! Anything you want to accomplish is going to take your dedication and persistence!

Plot holes drive me crazy! What about you? Do you ever wonder why so many plot holes? I think I may have an answer!

Plot holes can stem from:

💢Undeveloped Characters! How you ask?
Characters drive the narrative, not the opposite! If you don’t have a keen understanding of who your character was prior to your story, you’ll find yourself making it up along the way…stop!

💢Sub plots don’t make sense to the story.
Often times, we get off track by diving into situation that does not need to be explored. If it doesn’t drive the character to the next plot point, it’s not needed!

Going left instead of right is why you fell into that plot hole! That situation does not serve the story. In turn, you try to force it to serve the story instead of eliminating it altogether.

It’s vital to spend quality time developing your characters & mapping out your plot points before writing the script!

Plot holes 🕳 usually arise when you have overlooked something in the character(s) breakdown.

The character drives the story. Not the opposite! If you don’t answer the necessary questions about the anatomy or make up of your character, you’re bound to fall into a plot hole.

Your character(s) mental state, how they think and react is major to a scene.

Their past present and future must explored and mapped out! If you do that, you’re sure to fall into less plot holes!

🧗🏽‍♀️THE POWER OF CLIFFHANGERS
You can spot them at the end of every episode of a series and/or right before the commercial break. The cliffhanger is a powerful tool used to provoke suspense and a sense of urgency to find out what happens next. Which builds a faithful audience!

Have you ever watched a series or film that left you at the edge of your seat?! The only thing that comes to mind after its over is WTF?! You couldn’t wait for the next episode, season, part 2! They hooked us in with a brilliant cliffhanger.

Here are some tips on how to write a kick *ss cliffhanger 👇🏽👇🏽👇🏽

Use a flashback as a cliffhanger
~ They can make good cliffhangers if new information that affects the present-day action of the story is revealed.

Introduce a surprise
~ Give the audience something unexpected. Hit them with the shock factor!

Cliffhangers are NOT spoilers
~ the cliffhanger is not intended to show the audience what’s to come. It’s supposed to leave the audience baffled. Taken aback! Confused and Anxious! Don’t spoil it!

Thoroughly building the world your story will take place in is especially important when writing science fiction. Spend time focusing on the culture, the environment, the look, the habits, the language, the religion of your world.

Identify the historical background, be creative and intentional when building your world. If your world changes throughout the film, describe the changes and what causes the changes.
