All eyes on Rafa, as we resume gathering for our social and Carework events. We all continue to be subject to traumas that are generations old. AND, we have the power to tend to our individual and collective humanity through it all. How we wield that power has impact. Take heart. We will not look away. 🍉

Lessons from Earth 🌍 a B*H Reflection for the Solstice Season and end of the year…

Feel into the slowness of this time…
Observe all the gradients of earthen tone in the fallen leaves, branches, and myriad shades of mud & sand.

No grain is alike.
Each one holds a universe.

You don’t have to produce right now.

Just listen.
And allow the abundance of time, and lessons, to steep 💜

The entire time Natasha has been on family leave, and the entirety of their newborn’s life, Palestine has been barraged by bombs from the Israeli government. The Trauma that is hemorrhaging from this, and other conflicts around our world, impacts us all. It’s hard to focus on - let alone “promote” - anything beyond this. So this is all we’ve got for now. Check our Instagram stories for more information & resources 💜

Additional note: we’ll still be having our Creative Co-Works & Social Hours as well! We just won’t be publicizing those as much anymore, as we pause from adding new members to our closed community spaces and continue getting to know all the new folks who came in this summer! But stay tuned to this space, our Eventbrite and the Patreon for updates on more public-facing events and when we’ll be opening up internally again in the New Year!!

Important B*H Updates!

Coming up in the next month we have:

💜Creative Co-Works 8/30 & 9/30
💜NEW CareCraft Dates TBA SOON!
💜B*H Social Hour 9/15

✨All deets/links in bio!✨

PLUS, an important note...

💜 September will be the last month of us using the Public Eventbrite for the Social Hour and Creative Co-Works. We'll still be having those events, we'll just be taking a short pause on adding new members to our Black Community space for a few months.

Part of this is because Natasha goes on Maternity Leave in late October/early November (whoohoo!) and they're the one who usually manages the intake of new members, but also we want to take that cue from Nature to just focus on nurturing our existing community after the boom of growth we've had over the summer. We'll continue using the Public Eventbrite for events like our CareCrafts, and folks admitted to our Black Only space by 9/30 will continue to receive email and Discord updates on internal (Private) events through the Fall months until we open up again in the new year! So if you’ve been on the fence about joining us, now’s going to be the best time to do so before our more scaled back schedule begins!

Have you missed us? We’ve been busy this month!

Currently Natasha is wrapping up a Disability Justice Fellowship that has eaten up a LOT of their time in attention (case in point: check out that stack of books from our reading list!).

Additionally, both Adenike & Natasha have been taking some crucial time to attend to family needs. But we’re here! Swipe to see a lil more about where we’ve been, what we’re engaging with and what we’ve got coming up (there’s one particular announcement in there that we can’t wait to share more with you about, once we have a chance to get more settled into August! 😎💜)

03/07/2023

We’ve got a question for y’all:

During a summer that’s FULL of symbolic dates & decisions, what’s YOUR relationship to Symbols?

Are you someone for whom certain objects, animals, or other elements hold particular significance?

What does encountering or engaging with symbolic elements make you want to do? And how might you deepen that relationship to promote more meaning making and healing capacity in your life?

Come join us for PART TWO of our CareCraft workshop - an experience we started last month and enjoyed so much we’re doing it again! Link in bio with more details - brief overview below:

In this workshop, we will continue our exploration into the significance of symbols in our every day lives, thru visual crafting, community listening/discussion, & embodied movement. You don’t need to have attended the first workshop to enjoy this second one! We’ll have a brief recap of our initial experiences at the top of our time together, then dive deeper into our bodies and minds to find ways to more mindfully engage with the symbols in our lives.

THEN, still to come in August is our Dissonance Ritual, where we’ll take all of our symbolic exploration, fueled by the mini-rituals taking place in the B*H discord this summer, and peel back the layers of dissonance and conflict, and how those elements show up in our lives. You definitely won’t want to miss this one!

Stay tuned for more details to come! All links in bio 👍🏾 As always, folks in our community spaces get information & access first (plus exclusive discounts!) ✨ so definitely consider joining us in one of those spaces TODAY, for more opportunities as we get closer to these upcoming events! 💜

Non- Black folks, don’t think we forgot about you! We had an AMAZING cross racial event last weekend with our first Care Craft workshop, and there will be another on in July! So you can stay tuned too, and we’ll keep you posted as those options come available as well 💜

Reflections as we prepare for these upcoming events:

Ask yourself, what would it feel like to imagine that we are already our ancestors? Sit with that in your body and make note of what emerges.

What might happen if we allow ourselves to just sit and see each other, with full awareness that each of us holds our own distinct lineages?

We look forward to continuing to grow and share in community!

Let’s talk about our Community Partnership with the !

Community Partners are organizations that have developed careful relationships over time. As these relationships develop and deepen, we identify shared areas of focus and support each other through amplification of our projects and goals.

The Black Music Therapy Network (BMTN) & Black Creative Healing (B*H) share many things, particularly the commitment to centering community based, and culturally sustaining practices, supporting the liberation and freedom of Black people.

The B*H Podcast began in 2020 as an extension of BMTN. In 2022, B*H began conceptualizing its first ever Community Retreat, and at this time conversations began about how our mutual support for each other might shift and grow as well. At that time a Community Agreement document was drafted and now clearly distinguishes BMTN and B*H as separate, but intimately connected, entities;

Since its earliest days B*H episodes have been amplified on BMTN social media and newsletters, and BMTN has provided fiscal sponsorship to B*H in grant applications. In return, B*H has forwarded portions of proceeds from its podcast and Patreon subscribers, amplifying the work of BMTN through episode content and the use of BMTN’s name in promotional materials.

We work alongside each other to provide continued amplification of each others’ work, while each maintaining our own social media and organizational structures that operate distinctly from one another.

Why share this now? We’ve both got big things coming, and we want to make sure folks know that this work takes many forms and stretches across multiple spaces, relationships, practices & needs.

Want to support us both?

Follow us online for starters! Then:

We are deeply grateful to be in relationship with so many people, programs and initiatives that amplify Black indigenous healing traditions and deepen the knowledge of creativity and/or health to support Black communities.

09/05/2023

A Song Circle Reflection:

CW: Brief descriptions of state violence against persons experiencing mental health crises. Extended descriptions of Black love, care and resilience.

On April 25th, 2022, Herman (Trey) Whitfield III, a virtuosic pianist and composer, was killed by the Indianapolis police department, in front of his parents, while experiencing a mental health crisis.

As part of marking 1 year since Trey’s passing, the Black Music Therapy Network, a B*H community partner, joined forces with the Justice for Herman Whitfield III campaign ( ), to provide a healing song circle, in order to raise continued awareness of Herman’s case, and provide an opportunity for the community to heal and resource itself for the ongoing fight for justice.

Less than two weeks later, a vigilant on a New York subway would suffocate Jordan Neely, a talented young man also experiencing a mental health crisis, on camera and in the presence of several witnesses.

With the release of this reflection on our Song Circle for Trey (which includes video excerpts!), we re-commit ourselves to the fight for Healing Justice. No one deserves to die the way Herman and Jordan, and too many others have died. No one deserves to witness the kind of violence that those who were present for their deaths have had to suffer through. We can do better. We ARE doing better.

Even as thoughtless violence against us continues to rear its head, we continue to raise our voices. We continue to be the “boots on the ground” saying “We are watching. We are resisting. We are taking better care of each other than those who have sworn oaths to do so. And we will continue to care for each other. We will continue to heal, just as we have throughout our lineages, and within our communities, for generations.”

Do you hear freedom calling? We can feel it in our bones.

We're excited to be sharing the continuation of our Healing Justice in music therapy conversation featuring .moonga and ! Part 1 dropped last week, we've just been so busy we haven't been able to promote until today! In this continuation of the conversation, we're gonna dive deeper into uncovering what some of the impact of White Supremacy is on our bodies, and why it matters to sit with those memories and sensations. CONTENT WARNING: This episode contains surface level discussion of white supremacist violence. You will hear a brief moment of us naming a particular type of violence, then inviting folks to sit with the realities of that naming for a moment of silence in our bodies. This section of the episode lasts no longer than 30 seconds.

Later in the episode, we hear Nsamu and Adenike in particular talk about the value of doing that kind of work and really just sitting with the complexities, then in future excerpts from this conversation we'll dive further into some of the dreaming and the sort of wonderful things that can come after you sit with those complexities.

As mentioned in previous episodes, the full entirety of this recorded conversation lives in our community spaces, in the Patreon, in the Discord, and those will continue to be the places to go if you wanna really go into some deep, deep work on these topics!

Visit the links in our bio to access links to all of our community spaces, as well as the link to subscribe to our Eventbrite page for the upcoming Dissonance Ritual (which we highly recommend!) so you can get up to the minute details on events and other opportunities for deep work from Black Creative Healing.

Dissonance + Ritual = The Dissonance Ritual! B*H’s next cross-racial event, occurring 5/6 from 2-6pm EST!

In this one of a kind event, participants will be invited to ask themselves:

What is the truest nature of our relationship with Dissonance, not just as a sound, but as a concept? And what might occur when we let ourselves lean into it, in community?

Join us in community for this event, ignited by the spark of our 3/30 Healing Justice Discussion! This cross-racial event will be an opportunity for participants to explore the concept of Dissonance, using embodied creative methods that span across sound, visual art making, movement, and beyond.

Please note that due to the length and complex nature of the topic, this will be a paid event with limited registration for no more than 8 participants. Members of our Patreon and Free Black Community Space will receive exclusive discounts to this event, so before registering, consider joining one of our Community Spaces first!

The Podcast is taking a little break this week, but we’ve got lots still happening at B*H since last we posted!

An email with the FULL, Community Exclusive Recording of the 3/30 Healing Justice conversation with .moonga & went out yesterday (Tuesday) and those links will remain secured within the B*H Community Spaces (Discord, our Black-only space, and Patreon, which is a cross-racial space).

Starting next week, we’ll be releasing a few excerpts from the conversation for the podcast, but Community Spaces will continue to be the place where all B*H News & events are shared first and most fully!

Speaking of events: our next Social Hour is coming up! Saturday, 4/15 at 2pm EST. Let us know you’re coming via Eventbrite, or if you’re already in the Discord, stay tuned for the Zoom links to be shared at the end of the week! NOTE: Social Hours & Creative CoWorks are currently Black-Only. 💜 But more cross-racial events will be coming to Patreon (and beyond!) soon!

Natasha is hard at work on the transcript from our Event discussing Healing Justice in Music Therapy last week (plus a new podcast episode is on its way too!) We can’t WAIT to share all the magic of this conversation with our Community members, and are continually grateful for and .moonga for sharing their wisdom with us!

As we get materials ready to share (and look towards future events this one is inspiring!) we wanted to share some insights from the conversation with y’all, Particularly, this wisdom on the concept of dissonance:

Dissonance is natural. AND! Dissonance can be difficult. AND! Dissonance is worth exploring 💜

Excerpts of the whole conversation on HJ in Music Therapy (including deeper discussion on Dissonance & other concepts like Fugitivity, Ritual & Afrofuturism!) will be shared via the podcast in coming weeks. The recording in its entirety will be exclusive to our Continuing Education, Discord & Patreon spaces tho. Those folks will also be the first to know about upcoming events and related opportunities.

So come join us! Links for community spaces are in the bio!

We're excited to share with you the finale of our 4 part "HJ Bytes" series with .moonga! Here, we conclude our conversation on the glorification of overwork and reliance on "mechanistic" ways of thinking about our fellow human beings, and the "tools" we use to serve them. We build on our previous discussions about imagination to center on the crucial nature of relationship building as an integral part of our work as therapists, and as community builders in general.

A ✨ Creative Reflection✨from B*H…

We’ve been reflecting on Healing Justice: In deep (but also bite-sized!) ways, on the B*H Podcast.

Listen to our recent “Healing Justice Bytes” & individual reflective episodes via the Spotify links in our bio!

We shared ✨even deeper reflective content✨ via Patreon & Discord (more links in our bio!)

💜 Deeper Content included: 1 downloadable audio file, 1 movement experience, 2 playlists, and several prompts for our Patreon (link) audience to support your own body/mind practices.

We asked ✨a lot of questions✨ in general, including:

March Questions from the B*H podcast:

What is my/our relationship to …
1. the ideals of Healing Justice?
2. to the people, places & practices in our personal & collective histories?
3. to the major movements of history, & our current Socio-political landscape?

We’ve hosted ✨multiple events ✨ With more coming soon!

💜 More on our next event, HJ in Music Therapy:

Come join the Black Creative Healing Community for this EXCLUSIVE Conversation on Healing Justice in Music Therapy!

This VIRTUAL event is an opportunity for folks in our Patreon space, as well as students in the B*H Continuing Ed Course "Healing Justice in Music Therapy," to engage directly with Nsamu Moonga and Marisol Norris, Music Therapists, in a conversation about Healing Justice, co-facilitated by fellow MT-BCs Natasha Thomas and Adenike Webb.

We are excited to share Healing Justice Byte #3, where we continue our conversation with Nsamu Moonga (.moonga) about the construct of Healing Justice as it relates to the profession of Music Therapy. We continue building on our concerns about "grind culture" and the way it is impacting how we teach and learn, particularly as it shows up in music therapy students in training. We critique our often obsessive relationship with our tools, and the deep necessity of just "holding space" for therapeutic relationships to develop.

Reminder! The B*H Social Hour is this week, Wednesday, March 15th!! Links to register in bio!

Also, for future notice, we’re trying out having our Social Hours on the 15th of every month going forward, with the following parameters:

💜 If it’s a weekday, we’ll meet at 8pm EST, and
💜 if it’s a weekEND, we’ll meet at 2pm EST, so our folks across the pond will have occasional options to join us as well 😊

Looking forward to sharing space with whoever can join us! And remember, Zoom link will be inside Discord, and not Eventbrite (tho Eventbrite will send you automated reminders, which is why that might be a nice option for some folks, but isn’t a requirement 👍🏾). Just remember to check that Discord space (or fill out the Survey link in Eventbrite) to get admitted!

The same will hold true for our Co-Works on the 30th of every month too. We’re aiming to keep things simple as possible round here 🥰
