Since 1950, Iowa FFA members have served as Grandstand Ushers at the Iowa State Fair. The Ushers help answer questions and help concert goers to find their seats. East Mills FFA member Cloe Brown is serving as an Usher this year. She is staying at the fair the entire 11 days and getting to listen to all the big concerts!
Congratulations to East Mills FFA members, Kayla and Riley Streight! Riley received a blue ribbon with his sheep. Kayla’s sheep received Reserve Grand Champion Yearling Ewe and 5th place overall in the Carcass Lamb competition!
Congratulations to Mackenzie Stearns on receiving Blue ratings for three photos in the Iowa State Fair FFA Photography Show! You can see the photos in the FFA Display Building at the Iowa State Fair until August 18.
Yesterday, three East Mills FFA Officers attended the SW District FFA Chapter Officer Leadership Training (C**T) Conference. C**T was held at Atlantic High School and conducted by current and past state and district officers for over 200 FFA members.
Members participated in workshops based on leadership, personal growth, duties of an FFA officer. Attending were (L to R): Sentinel Leighton Fulton, President Mackenzie Stearns, and Reporter Cloe Brown.
Thanks to the Southwestern Community College Ag Program and Madi Marburger for delivery cookies last week! Madi is a former East Mills FFA member. The SWCC Ag Program students were recognizing their home FFA Chapters!
Principal Nielsen started the dominos today!
Thanks to the East Mills Elementary School for collecting 204 boxes of cereal for donation to the food pantry. The FFA Chapter had the honor of setting up the cereal box dominos today. The videos will be in the next post!
Today, East Mills FFA members, Levi McDonald, Steven Barrett, and Kayla Streight, participated in the John Deere Innovative Solutions Group Field Day near Bondurant. The field day focused on new technologies for combines, tractors, sprayers, and cotton pickers as well as career opportunities with John Deere. The students heard from John Deere employees who were former FFA members.
Mackenzie, Evy, and Klara attended the Iowa Youth Institute for the World Food Prize today at Iowa State University. All selected a different country and food insecurity issue within that country and wrote a paper proposing possible solutions. Today, they presented their solutions to small groups of their peers and participated in discussions. Through their participation, all three will receive a $1,000 scholarship to the ISU College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. (The scholarships can be earned each year of school 8th grade through 12th grade.)
Six members of the East Mills FFA Chapter attended the 96th Iowa FFA Leadership Conference in Ames on April 15-16. The conference was attended by 6,500 FFA members from 260 FFA Chapters.
Our FFA members participated in the following ways:
- Ailey and Wyatt were recognized on stage as the top Division VI (11-12 grade team) project from the Agriscience Fair earlier this month.
- Klara, Levi, and Cloe were selected to sing in the Iowa FFA Chorus.
- Mackenzie and Evy served as official delegates for the business session.
- The group volunteered with Meals from the Heartland to package meals to be sent to countries in need.
- The members also heard motivational speakers, visited the career show, watched Career Development Events, and listened to comments from Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig and Governor Kim Reynolds.
One more from the State Science and Technology Fair of Iowa! Wyatt Schmit and Ailey Marburger received Honorable Mention in High School Engineering putting them in the top 7 projects in the state! There were 71 schools at the event this week!
Congratulations, Ailey and Wyatt! These two exhibited the 1st place project in Division VI in Power, Structure, and Technical Systems AND were named the top Division VI project in the entire FFA Agriscience Fair! Division VI is for 11-12 grade team projects. This means that they will be recognized on stage at the Iowa FFA Leadership Conference on Tuesday, April 16 in Ames and receive plaques. Also, because they were first place, they will submit paperwork to see if they get selected for the National FFA Agriscience Fair in October. It was a great day!
Good luck to Wyatt Schmit and Ailey Marburger who are competing in the Iowa FFA Agriscience Fair and the State Science and Technology Fair of Iowa in Ames today! Their project focused on analysis of the decibel levels of the large machinery in the shop and the hearing protection needed for students. The FFA Awards ceremony will be tonight!
The Corner Conference Art Show finishes today at East Mills Jr/Sr High School. Watch Channel 3 later today for footage of all of the student projects from around Southwest Iowa! FFA member Steven Barrett will be on talking about the metal flowers he welded for the show.
Congratulations to Klara, Levi, and Cloe on being selected as members of the Iowa FFA Chorus! They will be singing with 95 other FFA members at the Iowa FFA Leadership Conference in Ames on April 15-16 in James H. Hilton Coliseum.
The East Mills FFA Banquet was tonight. Thanks to everyone who attended to recognize all of the hard work completed by these members all year!

Congratulations to our own Steven Barrett on being named the District Champion in Oxy-Acetylene Welding! Steven received 1st place and a Gold rating.
Klara Seipold delivered her 8 minute speech about Regenerative Agriculture and received a Silver rating.
Collin Rogers received a Silver rating in Arc/Mig Welding.
Levi McDonald delivered the District Officer Nominating Committee Ballot and served as a delegate at the business session.
Thanks to everyone for their support during National FFA Week! The members had three sets of games during Homeroom in the gym, took the chapter photo, made walking tacos for the Jr/Sr High School staff, and judged and awarded the top students in the Elementary FFA Week Coloring Contest!
Congratulations to Leighton Fulton and Shaelynn Marburger on finishing 32nd and 24th respectively with Silver ratings in the Sub-District Greenhand Quiz! 75 students from the South FFA Sub-District from 12 schools took the online quiz that focused on basic FFA knowledge.

Steven, Collin, and Klara advanced to the Southwest District FFA Convention on March 2 in Clarinda! Congratulations!
Six members of the East Mills FFA Chapter traveled to Des Moines today to attend the Iowa Farm and Power Expo at the Iowa Events Center. Members had the opportunity to see new and innovative technology, ideas for improving production methods, and methods to care for the environment.
East Mills FFA members, Mackenzie, Ailey, Evey, Levi, and Wyatt, attended the 39th Annual Iowa FFA Legislative Symposium today in Des Moines. The members had the opportunity to hear from Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig, Lieutenant Governor Adam Gregg, and Iowa Farm Bureau President Brent Johnson. In addition, they visited with Senator Tom Shipley and Representative Tom Moore. Over 700 FFA Members from 118 FFA Chapters were in attendance today.
We had our East Mills FFA Christmas Party tonight with a potluck brought by the FFA members. We decorated cookies and ate a lot of food!
Thank you to everyone who came by for the first East Mills FFA Farmer Appreciation Meal today! The FFA members fed over 60 people in the field and at the museum. Thank you to all of our supporters, the Indian Creek Museum, Classic Cafe in Malvern, and Mr. Scott and Mr. Holman for helping with transportation! We look forward to doing this again in the future! Happy Harvest!

The East Mills FFA is sponsoring a meal for all farmers in our school district November 15! Please come and eat that day or pick up some meals to go!
Last day! Visited the Monument Circle, attended the final General Session, and saw Iowa’s Kanyon Huntington from East Union High School in Afton be elected as National FFA Central Region Vice President! Now, time to head home.
96th National FFA Convention - Last full Day - Ailey, Kandra, Wyatt, and Levi spent a couple hours at the Career Show, took a tour of Beck’s Hybrids, attended the National Band and Chorus concert, and the 6th General Session. It was great to be in Indianapolis! One last day tomorrow!
