Rob and Callum present the Jewel in the ITHB Podcast Crown GOOD S**T 2020: Albums. Once again, the highlight of our year but with our listening habits slightly skewed this year we have taken comfort in records, sounds and artists that we hadn’t expected.
As with every episode this year, we heartbreakingly had to record this remotely but we had an absolute gas recording this one.

Big LGBTQ power rock to start the episode and it's all killer from there on with some sweet sweet picking and steel guitar, krautrock electronics, New York country, a loving ode to UK folk prog of the 70s and other great tunes. Check it.

Changes to the way Spotify allows music to be played through their platform means Callum and Rob now offer that same great ‘Two Best Friends Playing Their Favourite New Songs’ taste but in a ‘legit’ manner where musicians get royalties from being played on ITHB.

It also means that your boys can provide new CONTENT, whether that’s album dissections, artist playlist commentary or themed shows.

This does mean that our traditional feeds will not be updated, however we will keep our decade long legacy available for a time as our original feed becomes the ARKIVE.

We are so excited to be GOING LEGIT and the beginning of a new generation of music podcasting, which should see some innovative takes on music broadcasting.
Make sure to follow us on Spotify (link in bio) and get your friends onto that GOOD S**T.

Love

I’ll do an RSD picks tomozza but don’t forget normal releases. Pretty good week tbh with Kelly Lee Owens, Widowspeak, Belbury Poly and Blox leading the way imho. Some good reissues and comps including the latest in Bob Stanley’s stories collections of the sounds of Britain in the 70s, this one deals with that hot summer in 1976 that people on bbc four docos always rattle on about. Fuzzy Duck gets a legit release on Be With and there’s some jazz things that may be good? Never know with jazz. Oh and bonus picture of David Icke drinking a tin of tennants.

Here’s 10 pretty solid gold records available from records shops (pick a good one, innit). Idris Ackamoor is 69 and with The Pyramids he’s currently on the peak of his life Afro-jazz with fire and soul, some no bu****it heaviness. Jaga Jazzist make modern prog jazz, which is most definitely to set off a lot of folks ‘wank detectors’ it’s indulgent, studious and for me, satisfying af. Always worth picking up a Sun Ra reissue, Jenny O’s latest is some good indie and in lead single ‘God Knows Why’ she’s made my favourite ever pop song about going half death. I think I like Willie J Healey, he really knows songs but sometimes I dunno if he really knows Willie and I find myself just quite impressed at his ability to do stuff rather than the stuff - make sense? Give it a try. I heard Helvetia and they’re a post-punk/avant garde group that don’t suck (can we slow down on this genre?), pretty fun and some good jams which nod to Television when they did NYC prog. There’s some posthumous Jason Molina tracks too, I have to be honest, he’s on my massive list of ‘sh*t, I’ve gotta get round to checking them for real’ artists, probably not the best place to start. I’ll ask Callum, think he likes him? I think I’ve either bought a Video Age song into the pod before or Callum has, I think they sound like a nice jangly 80s indie pop group, I simply cannot be sure but if they’ve made an appearance on our pod, they simply must be great. Also, The Stooges last gig with their original lineup is available on third man, recorded off the soundboard which can either be mind blowing or a little lifeless, good songs though and you know they woulda slayed live back then. There’s your stinking ten, try to buy and support if you can!

Back on ITHB, it’s yer weekly round up of physical records available to you from good record shops. I know you like the new Laura Marling, you’ve gone on about it, enough and it’s possibly her best yet... yes it’s very Joni Mitchell but that’s her schtick and Joni’s the best. The FT gave it 4⭐️, they only give 5 to decent Fixed Rate mortgages. Truth is, this album is wonderful. Margo Price makes good country that gets reviewed favourably in the Guardian, all the singles bang. 2nd Grade’s Hit to Hit is an old school indie masterclass in the melodic lofi pop song, if ya dig on Big Star, Teenage Fanclub, Dino Jr, Pavement, GBV... then this is your jam boyo. Surprise Chef are here for your hard Axelrod deep funk needs, if you dug on that Karate Boogaloo LP then check their fellow Ozmen. The Beths have put a couple of indie pop bangers on their latest, try before you buy. Dougie Poole’s Freelancer Blues is the NYC country record you didn’t know you were craving, if all your country lads worked at startups rather than pretending they worked on the trucks, they’d make this record. Vinnum Sabbathi’s ‘Of Dimension and Theories’ is the best space doom psych rock record I’ve heard this year, sound’s so thick and enveloping - Stolen Body are killing it this year. Also picked out Pure X, Boyo and Sweet Spirit as records I’m really interested in hearing.

In this episode he unpicks today’s Dad Rock Dad aka The New Eclectic Dad. Don’t worry it’s nice and reductive and easy to dissect as the classic rock tastes of their ancestors.
