Michele Outland
Michele Outland (@michibuttons) has spent her career at some really beautiful #magazines. Beautiful ... because she made them that way. Her resume includes stops @marthastewart’s Everyday Food, @dominomag, @nylonmag, and @bonappetitmag, as well as the magazine she created and launched with her good friend, Fiorella Valdesolo (@fifival): @gatherjournal.
•
We talked to Michele about the power of #internships, her #Korean mother’s influence on the way she thinks about #food, about how to start a magazine in a post-print world — and when we can expect the return of @gatherjournal, the strong female role models who shaped her career, and, of course, #PIZZA.

All work and no play makes Janice Min, our guest for Ep41, anything but dull. In fact, it made her a superstar—in a place that’s rotten with them: #hollywood. We talked to her about her days at Us Weekly, The Hollywood Reporter, and about her current role at The Ankler.

Digital first? Algorithms got you down? Learn how to use #print as a weapon.

That's a lesson from our Ep6 guest, @emma.rosenblum, the #chiefcontentofficer @bustle digitial group, who, coincidentally, just relaunched beloved #fashion and #popculture bible, @nylonmag — in PRINT!

You should know that our guest for Ep40, @sdadich, is an engineer. And what do engineers do? Well, according to one definition in @merriamwebster, they “skillfully or artfully arrange for an event or situation to occur.” Exactly.
-
You probably know Dadich as an art director and editor, but beyond the titles, he’s the kind of guy who builds things, re-engineers them, re-configures them or, more importantly, thinks differently about them.

John Korpics (Designer: Esquire, GQ, EW, more)
If you can survive Art Cooper’s Rules for Exceptional Magazine Design, you can survive anything. Our guest for Ep36, John Korpics (@korpix), is indeed a survivor. His long career includes stops at the bluest of blue-chip brands: @gq, @entertainmentweekly, @esquire, @instylemagazine, and @espn — to name but a few — and he’s still going strong today.

If you read our Google Alerts feed, you’d see that the phrase “print is dead” is used almost daily, if not even more frequently, though rarely in reference to the #3 design podcast in America (more on that later).
-
Imagine our surprise then, when last week the aforementioned pod got not one, not two, but three (THREE!) pretty significant shoutouts from media around the world. We had ourselves a nice little week.
-
Thanks for noticing

Rochelle Udell is many things.
-
She is *all* of these things: teacher, ad woman, vice president, founder, wife, creative director, mentor, chair woman, student, marketer, graduate, design director, editor-in-chief, mother, chief talent officer, executive vice president, collector, president, meditator, internet strategist, partner, art director, volunteer, deputy editorial director, artist, retiree, and baker's daughter.

As Walt Whitman would say, “She contains multitudes.”

Ep33: Tina Brown
SEASON 4 PREMIERE!
-
In the late #eighties American media experienced a British invasion. There was Anna Wintour at Vogue. And Liz Tilberis at Harper’s Bazaar. And Harry Evans at Condé Nast Traveler. Joanna Coles (Marie Claire). Glenda Bailey (also at Bazaar). Andrew Sullivan (The New Republic). Anthea Disney (TV Guide). James Truman (Details).
-
But none of them made it bigger faster than today’s guest, Tina Brown. Si Newhouse never knew what hit him. Brown, having just turned 30, grabbed the wheel of Condé Nast’s flailing 1983 relaunch of Vanity Fair and proceeded to dominate the cultural conversation for the next decade.
-
And then? Another massive turnaround at The New Yorker. The first multimedia partnership at Talk. Nailing digital early with The Daily Beast. Then Newsweek. And, more recently, the books, the events, and the podcast.

“Print is absolutely at the core of what we do and we’re unapologetic about that.”
-
@Monocle, the brainchild of the expat Canadian magazine maker, Tyler Brûlé, was born in early 2007, a relatively awful year for the magazine business, not to mention the entire world. In that year alone, more than 100 print magazines folded. Months later, the global economy was hit by the Great Recession.
-
Undeterred, Brûlé proceeded to launch and build one of the most unique brands in the history of print media.

“The cult of the celebrity began to creep in everywhere. To every magazine.”
-
Celebrated photographer Albert Watson (@albertwatsonphotography) OBE, pre-dates the “cult of celebrity,” but has certainly made a living from it, shooting the beautiful (Christy Turlington Burns Naomi Campbell Cindy Crawford), the talented (Beyoncé, Mick Jagger, Prince), and the famous (Robert De Niro, Angelina Jolie, Jack Nicholson) for magazines like Vogue, Rolling Stone, and Harper’s Bazaar.
-
But that’s not what drives him. Mastering “the print” and all its intricacies—the math, the chemistry, the graphic design—is the bedrock of his legendary career.

It’s impossible to look at Gail Anderson’s body of work and not be reminded of the limitless potential of design.
-
And it’d be implausible — and wrong — to suggest that Anderson ‘Forrest Gump’ed’ her way through her career. You *could* call it luck. (She does). But the reality is that Gail has made her own choices, created her own opportunities — “designed” (there we said it!) herself a life, all the while bringing to the world what everybody loves about her: her sense of self, her joy for life, her humility, and her standards of excellence.

-
We’ve got a bonus special episode today, featuring the “last celebrity editor,” Joanna Coles, formerly of Cosmopolitan and Marie Claire at Hearst Magazines.
-
In this episode, we talk to the media magnate about Tilda Swinton’s version of her in Trainwreck (the movie), the actual train wreck that the magazine business has become, her bestie Sheryl Sandberg, why #porn isn’t real sex, and her second act in TV, movies, and, yes, even Broadway.
