There is something strange about the name Titanic...

Search and rescue teams were racing against time today to find a tourist submarine with prominent maritime experts and explorers believed to be onboard that went missing in the North Atlantic while on a dive to the wreck of the Titanic.

Fears were rising about the fate of the vessel as military and coast guard aircraft stepped up efforts later today.

The submersible was reported overdue, according to the US Coast Guard, which later tweeted that contact was lost with the sub just 1 hour 45 minutes into its dive on Sunday afternoon.

A British explorer and a French military veteran and submarine expert are believed to be among those onboard.

The Boston Coastguard is now looking for the missing vessel. The wreckage of the iconic ship sits 12,500ft- 2.5 miles - underwater around 370 miles from Newfoundland, Canada.

It's unclear how many people are on board and which company is responsible for it.

OceanGate Expeditions is one of the only companies that offers the tours. Tickets cost up to $250,000.

The company did not immediately respond to inquiries on Monday.

Marine Traffic shows the Canadian Coast Guard's Polar Prince, Horizon Arctic and Kopit Hobson 1752 are now making their way to the wreckage.

Its dives can last up to 10 hours each, with participants spending a total of 10 days at sea onboard a larger ship.

The company uses Starlink, Elon Musk's internet company, for its communications at sea, according to social media posts.

In an interview last year, the company's CEO Stockton Rush told CBC that their subs had capacity for five people.

'Titan is the only five-person sub capable of going to the Titanic depth, which is half the depth of the ocean.'
