Fun Facts about Washington, DC
Did you know that Washington names its streets running east and west with letters? Did you know that there is no J street? One story says that when the streets were being laid out, John Jay was Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. The architect of Washington was Pierre Charles L’Enfant. He was not happy with John Jay because of an anti-Great Britain treaty, so he decided to skip J when naming the streets. Though a great story, the more likely reason is that a capital J looks too much like a capital I so J Street was left out.

Thoughts for Thursday
A beach vacation might seem like an obvious vacation to us, but people didn't always think so. Before the 18th century, beaches were thought of as cold, hot, sandy, wet, dismal, uncomfortable locations. They were places of shipwrecks, natural disasters, and drowning. But in the early 19th century, many doctors in Britain believed that bathing in cold sea waves was beneficial for conditions they called "melancholy" and "spleen." They believed that the shock of submersion in cold, salty, and turbulent seawater was beneficial for health. Also, sea air was thought to be more oxygenated and purer. This coincided with the water and air in industrialized British cities getting filthier. People quickly developed the desire to get away from it all at the beach.

If you want to get away from it all, pre-order our latest mini Gruzzle, "The Beach," shipping next week from Gruzzle.com!!

Thoughts for Thursday
Believe it or not, there was once a hotel made of sand. In 2008, four sculptors in Dorset, England, used 1,000 tons of sand and worked 14-hour days for seven days to build the world's only sand hotel on Weymouth Beach. Everything on site was made from sand, including the two beds (one double and one single). There was also a couch and nightstands but no bathroom facilities or a door. Guests were able to enjoy stargazing, thanks to the roofless structure offering a magical night-time view. The one-room sand hotel was short-lived, lasting only until the next rainstorm when everything got washed away.

For a beach adventure that lasts through rainstorms, pre-order our latest mini Gruzzle, "The Beach" at Gruzzle.com. Ships the first week in May.

Thoughts for Thursday
The most common color of sand seems to be beige. But did you know that sand comes in lots of different colors including red, brown, pink, orange, gold, purple, green, white, and black! The colors depend on the minerals and rocks from which the sand has been formed. White sand comes from parrotfish p**p! Black sand comes from volcanic minerals. The most famous black beaches are in Hawaii, Iceland, and the Canary Islands.

If you’d like some actual sand to enjoy, pre-order our latest mini Gruzzle, "The Beach", shipping in early May from Gruzzle.com.

Thoughts for Thursday:
A well-known carnival ride is the Log Flume. This ride has been around since the early 20th century. Originally, log rides consisted of hollow logs or boats traveling through dark tunnels and over a few small hills. Typically, the ride ends with a rapid descent and splashdown into a body of water. One of the earliest elaborately themed flumes was Timber Mountain Log Ride at Knott’s Berry Farm. Disney’s Splash Mountain has guests traveling through a show building with Audio-Animatronic scenes playing on either side. The steepest drop on a log flume in the world is Chiapas at Phantasialand in Germany. The drop is at an angle of 53 degrees.

For boatloads of fun without getting wet, order "The Carnival" from Gruzzle.com. Ships next week!
