The only color that matters in business is green.
So my professor told me.
If that were true, more than 8% of corporate America would be Black.
But it's not.
So let's try this.
Men lie.
Women lie.
Numbers don't.
So riddle me this.
Black people make up 10% of college graduates.
Yet.
There are just 4 black chief executives among the 500 largest companies in the country.
That's 0.8% since we're counting.
Robert Reffkin, the black co-founder and CEO of the real estate brokerage Compass, started his own company after seeing a lack of representation at his employer.
Compass is now valued at $6.4 billion.
38% of Black millennials say they are considering leaving their jobs to start their own company.
Black women in the US today comprise the fastest-growing group of entrepreneurs, a 322% increase since 1997.
Still.
Investors do not back Black women-led startups.
Even with the large funding gap, Black women account for 89% of new businesses opened every day.
I'm all for Black entrepreneurs.
But we shouldn't have to start our own company just to get a fair shot.
If numbers don't lie, you tell me what it is.
It seems like there's a color that matters more than green in business.
As a recruiter, I will do the work.
I hope you will too.
The future depends on it.
