READ: Instagram stories – what's the point?
Instagram stories appear for just 24 hours so, really, what’s the point? Why put time, effort, and, sometimes, money into something that won’t be there the following day? Hmmm. Like last night’s date.
The point is, rather than cluttering up your posts with anything other than the most essential content, you have somewhere to post the remainder. And if you can create stories that are imaginative, intriguing and interactive, you not only engage your current followers, but potentially add to their number. Another point to consider is the limited time and short attention spans of a lot of people who only have a certain amount of patience with posts. Stories are like bright shiny objects to toddlers – attractive and enticing.
In Australia, the best time to post your story content for maximum coverage seems to vary between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. with Tuesdays and Wednesdays being the best days to post, and Sundays being the worst, possibly due to the effects of the previous Saturday evening. Who wants to read posts when you’ve got the dry horrors and a splitting headache to contend with?
In a lot of ways, stories are more fun than posts because the sky's the limit as far as content goes. You can include short videos, photos, and animation – all of which can be decorated with emojis. There are stickers available to help you create more engaging posts, such as creating a poll, asking a question, or even counting down to a product launch, or store opening.
It’s possible to attract more followers by linking content on your Instagram story page to someone else’s page and have a bit of fun. Think “Battle of the Brands” or “Who Wore / Cooked / Danced it Better?” and get your followers to comment and rate. What about a Round 2 and 3 to get your followers begging for more and telling all their friends in the meantime?
Finally, putting the copy, or the images, from your Instagram post in your Instagram story seems like a wasted opportunity. If your followers have seen the same thing in the post, what’s to get them checking out your story? The answer is nothing. Nada. Non. Nein. Nahi.
You can certainly link the content, but try something that helps both you and your followers. Options like quizzes, polls and questions not only engage your audience, but also provide you with valuable information you can use for advertising and marketing. Asking your followers to rate something, or even to suggest something are opportunities too valuable to miss.
To conclude, I hope I have answered the question about what the point of Instagram stories is. I know I certainly don’t have any questions.
