For those who will be staying in Minnesota for the Thanksgiving holiday weekend and don’t want to deal with the hustle and bustle of Black Friday, there will be a rare opportunity on Friday, Nov. 24 to get away from it all. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has announced that entry fees for all 75 Minnesota State Parks and Recreation Areas will be waived. Free Park Day happens four times a year. All the park picnic areas have fire rings for those looking to make a day of it and eat in the parks.

"One from the incredible northern lights show that .loew and unexpectedly caught during our Boundary Waters trip a few weeks ago 🛶

This was the first night of our 6-day journey, and we were running out of daylight but happened to find this awesome north-facing site right at sunset. The sky was completely clouded over when we arrived, so we weren't even thinking about seeing the aurora that night. After cooking up a feast, the clouds quickly broke up, and the sky became clear with an apparent glow on the horizon. Then, shortly after, the craziest band of pink started dancing in the sky right over our canoes. It has always been a "dream" shot to see the aurora on a trip like this, and this was one unforgettable show that's going to be hard to beat.

I've been pretty wrapped up with the fall colors lately, but I'm excited to share the rest of our BWCA journey over the next few days. Huge thanks to for making this trip possible once again. This was my third trip with them, and I would highly recommend outfitting with them if you’re ever thinking about a BWCA trip. Every trip is always flawless, and it's run by some incredible folks at the end of the trail."

Last night's sunset from Oberg Mountain near Lutsen, MN

Well last night we had the northern lights just shining everywhere and it was a perfect night to capture them… I did not partake in the photo frenzy… I was too tired… I have been seeing tons of images all morning of beautiful captures, some with ships, many without… This shot however tops them all by a mile and a half… It was taken by Captain Eric Treece, former Captain of the Wilfred Sykes and Edward L Ryerson, now retired from the Lakers and moved over to Pilots.. He is aboard the Federal Bering right now and he took this last night from the bridge as they were headed north on Lake Superior making their way to Thunder Bay… mind blowing… Captain Treece is an incredible Photographer and this shows us exactly why…

Love it Captain!!! You rock!!!
