Ohio in the winter months…we love them but we also love to get away from them (LOL) and that is exactly what we did in late December 2021 when AUT took on Miami, Florida. It had been awhile since we traveled together and we figured…WHY NOT? We weren’t sure what to expect from South Beach at the time between Christmas and New Year’s but this was a destination that will become an annual Ask Us Travels and Lifestyle getaway. We were blown away by the hospitality, things to do, and the culture that was incredibly unique to the area.

🏝Sunset in South Carolina, USA

Did you know that most of the film Forrest Gump was filmed in Beaufort, South Carolina? Many of those iconic scenes were filmed either there or in Savannah, Georgia.

Both of those destinations are just 30 miles from Hilton Head Island where this photo was taken.

🗺Mysteries of Petra, Jordan …by guest blogger .

askustravels.com/petra-city-one-of-7-wonders/

Many things in Petra remain a mystery and some of the information is still a secret. Archaeologists believe that we know only 15% of the city and 85% is still underground.

There are many big carved stones in different shapes for which no explanation can be found…

You can hear about some legends that say there are genies in some of them… Would you believe that? For what purpose were they built?

1993, scrolls were found dating back to the Byzantine period (Byzantine=Eastern Roman Empire who took over Petra 549), this information that is inside them is still a secret… why?

2016, thanks to satellite and Google earth, archaeologists found a huge unknown structure under the sand which probably has smaller structures inside it, experts are still trying to understand exactly what it is.

How they controlled water in Petra was admirable. Nabataeans built a massive system of dams, cisterns and water conduits to control the water and floods. Some still wonder where they grew their food, like for example pigs.

We know that there was a large earthquake in 363 AD but the research tells that it doesn’t answer to the one big mystery, what happened to the Nabateans, the civilization of people who made this city so elaborate…

Petra was well hidden and protected because it is located beyond the rugged canyons. This kept it safe for a very long time. Perfect place for this glorious city.

700’ long and 90’ high, Ash Cave is the largest recess cave in Ohio. A small waterfall rolls over the top rim to a pool below and there are two whispering galleries inside. In addition to Old Man's Cave, Ash Cave and Cedar Falls, a short drive away are Rock House and Conkles Hollow. Rock House is the only true cave in Hocking Hills. Situated inside a cliff, you can walk through the tunnel inside. At Conkles Hollow, you can hike the rim trail to get amazing views of the area.

When visiting Hocking Hills, the most popular destination is the Old Mans Cave area. The path here takes you to upper and lower waterfalls, through gorges and a large recess cave. From Old Mans Cave, you can hike the 6 mile Grandma Gatewood Trail which will take you to Cedar Falls and Ash Cave, two other sites not to be missed in Hocking Hills. While Summer and Fall are popular months to visit, Winter is just as beautiful. What you experience when visiting in the Summer will be completely different in the Winter, Spring and Fall. Many people may not realize the icicles in Hocking Hills can be up to 20 feet long!

👩🏻‍🦰 Nestled in the heart of the Hocking Hills region of southeast Ohio is a dining, lodging and relaxation gem. Certainly when you first walk into the main buildings of the , whether the lobby or the main restaurant, you get a sense for an experience that fits in with the cabin country that exists throughout the Hocking Hills region. That said, the Inn & Spa at Cedar Falls has expanded through the years with a wide variety of lodging options.

The newest additions over the last several years are Yurts and Geodomes. Both of these options offer Glamping in style with the comforts you would expect from the hotel rooms or cabins, but with the unique aesthetics and appeal offered by these two options.

Kuusamo, called the “gateway to Lapland” is an area in Finland close to Russian border. It is known for its very beautiful and peaceful nature, wildlife, world-class skiing and Sami-history. Great place to go on winter or summer. Link in the bio to the full blog post by guest blogger petrahellman.

askustravels.com/kuusamo-finland-the-gateway-to-lapland/

One favorite activity to do in Kuusamo is skiing at Ruka Ski Resort. Ruka has won several awards for being the best ski resort in Finland, you can ski there over 200 days/year. There is plenty of options for beginners, groups and families. There are many activities also for non-skiers. If you are used to ski bigger mountains, I would still recommend to experience Ruka because of its unique untouched nature, if you are beginner, this is also a great place to start! Ruka has every year a couple of weeks light festival (Polar Night Light Festival). This is perfect time to go amaze this beautiful enlightened mountain in Lapland. If you like excitement you can also go slide down the mountain in sled track but only in summer time. Also, dont miss the scenery lift! The views over the hills are stunning.

Natural Beauty and Sensational landscapes: you will find captivating beauty of nature here.Tuscany is a perfect place for a road trip. All the biggest natural treasures are out of cities. Small villages, farms, vineyards, hidden beaches – undeniable beauty of countryside. Sunny valleys, rolling hills and mountains, lush green fields – so breathtaking you could spend a lifetime exploring and admiring it. Just head off to the Tuscan hills and drive from town to town, stopping at the most enchanting spots.

Food and Tuscan wine: Tuscan food and wine is seriously mouth watering culinary treasures! Tuscan food its all about simple meals that could be made in large amounts. That came from Italian idea of ‘peasant cooking’ (cucina povera) of the farming region. Tuscan kitchen doesn’t use complicated seasoning, heavy sauces or complicated recipes. Instead food is made using fresh, high quality ingredients to bring natural rustic flavors.

Meals not to miss here: Schiacciata bread with fresh olive oil, Antipasti Toscani- cutting board with a mix of appetizers, Bistecca alla Fiorentina – a T-bone steak, Pecorino sheep mil cheese, rustic soups, Pappa al pomodoro – tomato and bread stew, Cacciucco – fish stew.

And don’t forget gelato – best ice cream in Italy.

Tuscany truly is a wine region. Montelpuciano, Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino. Red wines dominates here, but you should also try white wines such as Vernaccia or very light Vermentino.

🇮🇹Italy has always been an ideal holiday destination.

No matter who you are : nature lover, fan of architecture and art, romance seeker, lazy holiday enthusiast or gourmet kitchen expert – you will find everything in Italy. Wonderful nature, cities full of history and art, ancient ruins and spectacular architecture, fantastic food.

Every time I visit this country I fall in love with it more and more. I didn’t hesitate a second when I got an offer to visit beautiful Tuscany region. It was on my ‘Dream Destinations’ travel list for a long time. I had a vision from books and movies that Tuscany is a romantic place full of sunshine, greenery, sunflowers fields and olive trees, life loving people and food to die for. I was absolutely right. I found a true paradise there.

As soon as you see the most ‘Italian’ Tuscany mountains landscape, all the tention and stress you might have vanish in a second. The environment that heals a soul. After all – that is the environment that inspired Leonardo Da Vinci.

🌺 The topiaries, gardens and flowers are simply brilliant. Every portion of the lawns at Epcot were covered in color. Our favorite topiaries were Donald and Daisy located near the World Showcase.

🪴 The outdoor kitchens offer food choices for everyone! For our sit down lunch, our daughter chose the Regal Eagle Smokehouse where we enjoyed classic cheeseburgers, fries, macaroni and cheese and more. The most refreshing taste of the day was our popsicle trio: honeydew, raspberry-mint, and coconut-lime (gluten/wheat friendly)! We also had warm cheese strudel with mixed berries in Germany, along with frushi (strawberry, pineapple and cantaloupe wrapped in sweet rice and pink soy wrap served with whipped cream) in Japan. The World Showcase did not disappoint!

👱🏻‍♀️Epcot is a must see part of Disney when in the Orlando area and Lead Blogger MidwestFamilyWanders details some great thoughts on a recent visit to the park with the existing Covid restrictions. Link below:

askustravels.com/epcot-shows-the-creative-side-of-disney/

🌴Let’s face it…the pandemic has just been A LOT and we were feeling itchy to get away from Ohio during our spring break and have some FUN! After much consideration, we planned a roadtrip to Florida so we could have it all. Beaches, amusement parks, AND endless sunshine?! A definite win after a cold and snowy winter.

🎠Initial Thoughts on Our Day At Disney (Epcot)

🎟Buy your tickets ahead of time because Disney is operating at 35% capacity. We planned our trip about 4 weeks in advance and the only tickets available were for Epcot (which was great because it’s our favorite park). All others were sold out!

🧼Disney has MASTERED cleanliness and social distancing during the pandemic while still maintaining the magic of the atmosphere. Disney parks are ALWAYS clean but this time around Epcot was immaculate. Even greater care was taken to ensure that everyone stayed safe. Cast members were monitoring lines and gently reminding guests to stay 6 feet apart using stickers on the ground as guidelines. Reminders of appropriate mask wearing were also located around the park with warnings of being asked to leave if masks were not worn properly.

🏖 Check out our latest post by first time Guest Blogger StephExperiences. The link below gives tips on how to make a trip to the Caribbean islands of Turks & Caicos a memorable experience.

askustravels.com/turks-and-caicos-a-must-for-the-bucket-list/

🏝Turks and Caicos is a destination that everyone needs to have on their travel bucket list. Whether you stay at an all inclusive, an apartment, or rent a villa, this island has everything you need and more.

We’ve always stayed at an all inclusive when traveling to the Caribbeans so this was our first experience renting a villa on VRBO. Looking back on our experience, I wouldn’t have done it any other way!

⛱The Beaches of Turks and Caicos

There are no words that describe how beautiful the beaches are and no images to do them justice. The sand is smooth and the water is clear but turns turquoise the further you venture out.

Since we rented a car, we were able to travel around the entire island visiting multiple secluded beaches with little tourism and space to walk along the shore.

🤿Our favorite beaches and reefs:

1. Sapodilla Beach – our favorite!
2. Taylor Bay Beach
3. Coral Gardens Reef – Great for snorkeling and spotting turtles
4. Grace Bay Beach
5. Smith’s Reef
6. Long Beach

👩🏻The Road to Hana is a must see when visiting Maui. Lead blogger WlkinGingerly detailed some fun ideas on the journey in our newest blog post.

askustravels.com/jet-to-the-valley-isle-of-maui/

🍍Road to Hana

🚘Fifty-two miles, 617 curves and 56 bridges. The Road to Hana is an exhilarating trip along the Maui coastline with amazing views of the Pacific on one side and waterfalls on the other. To really experience the RTH, wake up early and have breakfast in Paia. Try and have your main stops planned out ahead of time because the road can get congested by midday. My favorite stops are the black sand beach of Wai’anapanapa State Park, Ching’s Pond, Garden of Eden Arboretum (a little touristy, but beautiful gardens), and Pools at ‘Ohe’o. What about Hana? Well, it’s not much to write home about, but this trip is about the journey, not the destination. Before you head to the Pools at ‘O’heo, I like to grab lunch at one of the food trucks in Hana such as Da Fish Shack or Troy’s Plate Lunch. At ‘Ohe’o gulch you can hike the Pipiwai Trail up through a bamboo forest to Waimoku Falls. After, if you have an SUV, you can attempt to drive around the backside of Haleakala, but honestly it’s more picturesque and just as fast to take the RTH back towards Paia. Make sure to bring cash and grab fresh banana bread and roadside cold coconuts.

🌺Hawaii is a wonderful destination to visit but each island has a very unique character. While some are more busy and crowded and others are quiet and full of jungles, Maui is the balance of all that. Lead Blogger WlkinGingerly wrote up some great tips to think about if considering a trip to the middle of the Pacific.

askustravels.com/jet-to-the-valley-isle-of-maui/

The Valley Isle of Maui is the best of both worlds. Resorts and fine dining are plentiful, but if you take a drive you can get lost among the waterfalls, tropical rainforests, and beautiful beaches.

🛏Where To Stay

Three great areas to stay with a wide variety of resorts and condos are Kaanapali, Kapalua, and Wailea. My favorite resort on the island is the Four Seasons Maui located in Wailea. The beach in front of the hotel is fantastic and the service is impeccable. It has two pools – a main pool for all ages and a separate adults only pool. There is no extra charge for umbrellas, beach chairs, or poolside cabanas at the main pool. During the Fall the hotel offers a “couples season” with daily activities. While there, we did champagne and oysters on the beach, a sushi making class, a night market, poke pop-up, and a progressive dinner through the hotels restaurants. In Kaanapali we have stayed at Honua Kai, a beachfront condo building which has many amenities of a resort including a spa and onsite restaurant.

✈️Getting There

Fly into Kahului Airport (OGG) and rent a car. It’s the best and cheapest way to get around the island. Costco always has the cheapest car rates for the Hawaiian islands (and cheapest gas) and is worth the membership price if you don’t already have one.

👀Watch Out For

The entrance fee to Haleakala National Park is $30.00 per vehicle and this pass is valid for 3 days. If you are planning to visit both the ‘O’heo Gulch on the RTH and the summit of Haleakala, plan to do so within 3 days of each other to avoid paying the entrance fee twice.

Book reservations for popular restaurants like Mama’s Fish House and Merriman’s well in advance.

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿Scotland is a beautiful country and our recent post explores the beauty of Dumfries and Galloway. Guest Bloggers Two_Tickets_To has shared some lovely details of the charming spots to visit in this area.

www.askustravels.com/south-west-scotland-is-a-secret-waiting-to-be-discovered/

Top Three Reasons To Visit

🌅The wealth of charming coastal villages:

Dumfries and Galloway is blessed with the best of both worlds. Whilst many of its treasures lie inland, it’s almost impossible to visit without spending some time along the beautiful stretches of coastline. The southern coastal route is blessed with some particularly lovely villages, as well as some perfectly secluded beaches.

My favourite spot is the village of Kirkcudbright, with its postcard-worthy harbour and thriving independent arts scene.

🌲The chance to get your hiking boots on in Galloway Forest Park:

Providing a great contrast to the seaside attractions, the Forest Park in Galloway is Britain’s largest. With enough trails to last a lifetime, it’s the perfect place to reconnect with nature and embark on some classic Scottish hikes. The landscape is varied enough that you can easily choose a route that suits you – whether that’s a gentle stroll surrounded by woodland, or a strenuous trek up some of the taller hills.

🏰The allure of Drumlanrig – one of Scotland’s grandest castles:

Ideal for both rainy and sunny days, Drumlanrig Castle is a beautifully grand 17th century stately home. For culture-buffs, a trip inside the castle to marvel at some of its 120 rooms is not to be missed. The building is steeped in history, and is home to one of Scotland’s finest private art collections.

Outside the castle’s pink sandstone walls, you’ll find thousands of acres of estate land, as well as some impressive formal gardens – perfect for a summer explore!

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿Scotland is a country famous for its rich history and landscape. Guest Bloggers Two_Tickets_To have written about a less visited area that’s worth considering. Linked in our bio is the full post.

🗺Truth be told, I've been banging on about Dumfries and Galloway - a little-known corner of South-West Scotland - for quite some time. In some ways, it's a victim of its own location.

From its southern coast, you can gaze across the water to the world famous peaks of England's Lake District. ‘The Lakes’ attract millions of visitors each year, and most people who are inclined to venture any further north will be heading straight up the M6 towards Loch Lomond and the stunning beauty of the Scottish Highlands beyond. Dumfries and Galloway finds itself, therefore, in a bit of a no-man's-land

It is a secret waiting to be discovered, which makes a visit all the more rewarding for those who venture off the usual tourist trail in Scotland. Indeed, there is scenery here which will make you feel like you're in the heart of the Highlands, surrounded by endless wilderness.

🛏Where to stay

There is no shortage of accommodation options. You may choose to stay in one of the many B&Bs scattered around the towns and villages. Self-catering is also an excellent option, and there are lots of places on AirBnB to choose from. I’d like to give a special shout out to the Creeside Escape shepherd’s hut - a perfect place to go off-grid!

🛍Shopping

Shopping may not be one of the big draws of visiting Dumfries and Galloway, you’ll find no shortage of independent shops in villages like Kirkcudbright. The best way to shop here is by supporting local suppliers and artisans - keep an eye out!

Three Favorite Things About Kampot, Cambodia

🌶Visiting Pepper Plantations (LaPlantation)

Kampot Pepper is considered to be the best pepper in the world so the plantations are must see. LaPlantation offers you a free guided tour around their farm where you can also taste and buy all the different peppers. You can also stop at their restaurant and have lunch. I loved the whole pepper experience with a beautiful scenery. (Pepper prices there are much higher than if you would go buy from Local Market in Kampot Town)

⛰Go explore Bokor Mountain National Park

Bokor National Park has so much to offer! Rent a bike and ride up to the mountain on one of the best roads in Cambodia. I love the gorgeous view while driving up when you can see the whole Kampot from different ankles. Visit beautiful temples, fabulous Casinos, hike to the waterfalls or go to my favorite spot, an abandoned church.

🚣‍♂️River Adventures

Kampot is built on the riverside so you can find many fun activities by the river. One of the must do things is to kayak around the stunning loop on the river. I love how peaceful the environment is and from the river you can catch the best sunsets in town. But I would say my favorite activity is the waterparks by the river! (Kampot River Park and Arcadia Waterpark)

🗺Kampot, riverside restaurant town south of Cambodia.

Kampot is unlike any other Cambodian city you’ll find. If you like a good food, natural adventures and historical discoveries, don’t skip over this hidden gem of a city. Kampot is also known as an expats paradise.

✈️Getting to Kampot, Cambodia

Most people fly first to Phnom Penh, where easiest way to get to Kampot is by taxi or minivan. I see it easier after long time traveling to take a taxi which will cost you only around 40usd (2-3h drive) but if you want to go cheaper you can get a minivan for 8usd (3-4h drive).

🚲Getting Around

-Rent a bicycle or motorbike (bicycle 2usd, scooter 4usd and dirt bike 15usd per day)
-Tuktuk! Download a PassApp app to your phone and you can order tuktuk cheaper and easier wherever you are.
-Walking, if you only stay in Kampot Town

🚲Other Yosemite Activities or Sites

-Tuolumne Meadows
-Cathedral Peak
-Bridalveil Fall
-Bicycle rentals
-LeConte Memorial Lodge
-The Ahwahnee Hotel (even if just to look around)

🥪Places to Eat:

Due to COVID some restaurants are closed, so I would suggest you pack your food and snacks for your stay at Yosemite.

Here are some other options:

Degnan’s Kitchen –sandwiches, salads, pizza and a variety of soft drinks, coffee

Village Store –supplies, food and beverages.

The Base Camp Eatery- Here you will find a breakfast, lunch and dinner menu, as well as the Roadside Grill and YES there is a Starbucks located inside!

The Ahwahnee – Great lunch options in a magnificent historical space (check if open to non-guests during the pandemic)

🐻Other Tips:

Watch out for wildlife. We ran into a bear on Lower Yosemite Falls and at El Cap meadow. We also saw a wild cat at Upper Yosemite Falls.

⛰Visiting Yosemite National Park is by far one of them most magical parks I have ever visited! Its beauty is unlike any other, and there is TONS of exploring to do. Yosemite stretches about 1,169 miles, features 115 trails ranging from 2.1 to 211 miles so you’ll have plenty to explore and discover! Be sure to book your stay and check the weather for any road closures when planning your trip.

🚗This park is located in the Sierra Nevada of California; reservations are not required to enter the park however reservations are required for camping or lodging if you are planning to stay the night. We were not able to stay in Yosemite Valley due to it being booked months in advanced, but we were fortunate enough to get reservations at Tenya Lodge at Yosemite. The only downfall is that they drive was about 1 hour to and from Yosemite Valley, so be sure you give yourself enough time for the 2 hr drive if you opt to stay at Tenya Lodge.

⛺️Where to stay-

-Yosemite Valley Lodge
-The Ahwahee
-Curry Village
-Rush Creek Lodge at Yosemite
