WHO IS THE RIOT QUEEN?

The face of our label had to be one of the underrepresented. They had to be someone who inspired us. That's why we chose 'Big Rachel' from Glasgow's history. A formidable woman who took no sh*t.

Standing at 6ft 4ins tall, Rachel Hamilton was originally from Ireland but settled in Partick, Glasgow. She was known for her strength, and talent for hard manual labour. Hamilton worked as a labourer in Tod and MacGregor shipbuilders. But it was during the Partick Riots in 1875 that she made her name. She was made a special constable (a position usually given exclusively to men) in order to assist the police to drive away a mob who had gathered during a weekend of street violence. The violence dissipated, and Big Rachel’s name was secured in an important chapter of Glasgow’s social history. She died in 1899, aged 70, at a time when women were not expected to see beyond the age of 50.
