Io Yasuda won the Shosetsu Subaru Shinjinsho (Shosetsu Subaru Award for Best New Talent), the Japanese literary prize given annually to an outstanding commercial fiction by a newcomer author, for her debut novel, The Hoax, in 2010. Her second novel, Shukatsu Fashion Show, was published in 2012 by Shueisha. In 2015, she launched the Shuccho Ryori Oriori-do novel series.

Born in 1966 in Osaka, graduated from Kansai University with a degree in politics, she now works as an author and a judicial scrivener, as well as a musician, the leader of an NPO…yes, she’s taking on various personas in her own life, too.

Being an imposter? Is that a kind of hoax? Maybe. But everyone is merely players on the stage, right? Although this is just a job for her, however weird it looks, she has an inherent flair for acting and her convincing performances help repairing troubled relationships, expose great injustices…and even draw admiration and affection from a young aspiring actor named Monzo. Through her off-stage performances, Maki discovers humanity’s kindness, weakness, cruelty, and absurdity. And eventually she finds herself capable of some human emotions she has never known.

Slapstick funny, yet poignant in the end, this is a comedy of errors about all of us, the actors//on the stage called the world.

All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players.

Maki, a long time actress pushing forty, single, world-weary and cynical with a bad mouth and a penchant for booze, without any foreseeable success in her career or love interest in her private life,quits her performance in the theater at last. Sheis now an employee at OR corporation, a shady agency that sends actors to play roles suiting the various needs of customers without breaking any laws. Suddenly her stage isn’t in the spotlight, or on a screen, but everywhere in the real world. Actually, Maki can’t believe how ridiculous her assigned roles are: a newly-married wife as substitute for the bride who is reluctant to spend time with her husband’s relatives; the good mother of a schoolboy whose actual CEO mom only cares about her career; and even a dead body needed for an investigation of insurance fraud.
