This video plainly shows how aggressively Afghan refugees are being treated by the Immigration Officers in each city of Indonesia. Such misbehaviors have not only happened in the recent peaceful demonstrations, yet it has been an ongoing act of disrespect and disdain since the first time these refugees have sought asylum in any immigration office around Indonesia. They have been mistreated and harassed for almost a decade. But the only difference we see today is that it's being done proudly even in front of the cameras. And it's really surprising that not even one person question such misbehaviors upon Afghan refugees. Everybody has turned a blind eye on such aggressive acts against innocent refugees. That doesn't seem to be a good sign. Maybe there's no humanity left to seek justice for forgotten Afghan refugees in this limbo.

Let us start by saying that we are disappointed by the level of the indifference of Indonesian government and people toward us.

We, the Afghan refugees, have been protesting for a year now. We walked every street around the city. We have passed by every Indonesian house in this city. There's not a single person in the city who doesn't know about us and our plight. Our feet are peeling skin from walking. Our throats are hurting from shouting. Our hands have gone numb holding the signs "we are human like you. Please help us put an end to this endless limbo. Help us to prevent another refugee from taking his life. Help us to rescue our family from the heart atrocities.”

It is disappointing that we haven't received any convincing response from United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). What is even more disappointing is that not a single Indonesian has approached us asking what our pain is and offered his help in the one year of our peaceful protest. Not a single Indonesian! Why? Aren't we human like you? We have families like you have that are separated from us for the past ten years. We had a home like yours that was destroyed by war.

We once again ask the Indonesian people to stand with us. Help us lead a normal life like you. We cannot effort losing another. 16 refugees committed su***de to relieve themselves from this limbo. Please join our peaceful protest to pressure the government and UNHCR to find a permanent solution for us.

Afghan-Hazara refugees have been waiting in Indonesia for a long time (almost a decade) to get processed through and obtain resettlement in a third country. However it seems that they are to be kept for a longer period of time in this country. The resettlement process through UNHCR Indonesia is so slow and this uncertainty caused many Afghan-Hazara refugees to suffer mental illnesses and some even committed su***de. Refugees in Indonesia have no right to study, work, or any other basic human rights anyone can have as a free man. It's time to end this injustice and give them what they deserve. They also deserve a peaceful life in a safe country with all their human rights preserved.

Yesterday, August 23th, some local gangs tried to violate Afghan-Hazara refugees' peaceful demonstration in Batam City. As it's clear in the video one of the gangs attacked on one of the refugees and bit him in the head. Another refugee was witnessed bleeding in the head. The refugees then went to make a complaint to the police, however they did not receive a proper respond. We have to mention that this is not the first time this group disturb Afghan-Hazara refugees in this city.

I am a human being like other human beings in the world who wish to live according to their wishes and want to be useful in society and serve humanity. I have never committed a crime in this world and I have never broken any law, but I have been imprisoned in this limbo for a decade. All my basic rights have been taken from me. I am not allowed to live as a normal human being.

My life was wasted in immigration detention centers worse than any prison in the world. A felon or an outlaw always receives a specific sentence and a certain sentence period, after which he is released and his criminal record is cleared. But after decades of literally rotting in refugee camps, the only specific sentence refugees receive is "be patient and wait. Period." And this is supposed to heal all their mental illnesses as well as everything they have lost.

Then a miracle happened and refugees were released from refugee camps to local communities. But is that it? Definitely not! With all sorts of restrictions and everyday-a-law regulations, these home prisons are nothing less than refugee camps with us as prisoners still. But then again, after 10 long and interminable years of enduring this hardship and putting up with this nonsense, what's even worse and impossible is the utter uncertainty of when exactly we're going to be taken out of this limbo and live just like a human being and nothing more.

For every person who leaves here, hundreds more are drawn to their deaths. Only God knows how many talented and skilled people have lost their lives in their rooms, roads, hospitals, accidents, etc., some by accident and some intentionally to end their miserable life and this cruelty. And I'm not even talking about those poor refugees who are permanently committed to mental hospitals for good.

But who are we? All of us, every single person that you see here in our peaceful demonstration today, is either a father, or a brother, or a son who has been separated from his family and obviously his family has been torn apart. Can you just believe it? Believe that you are imprisoned in another country for years to serve as a lesson to anyone who dares to seek asylum in your country and...

In coincidence with Ashura, the martyrdom of Imam Hussain A.S, today, August 8th, 2022, Afghan-Hazara refugees in Pekanbaru came to the streets and called for their freedom and deprived human rights. The forgotten Afghan-Hazara refugees in Indonesia urge the International human rights organizations to find them a durable solution to their critical issues and end their uncertainty in this limbo.
