Premiering tonight!

The Covid Cruise tells the story of what happened on board the Diamond Princess while it was quarantined in Tokyo’s Yokohama Harbour. It was the first Covid cluster outbreak outside of China, and the decision was made to quarantine everyone on the ship for 14 days. 3,711 passengers, 14-day quarantine, 1 deadly infectious disease.

I’m Mike Downie and I’m the film’s director. COVID Cruise is a good reminder of how insidiously this invisible virus spreads through a group of people. Surprisingly, on the Diamond Princess only the passengers were quarantined - the crew kept working, often in close quarters. When not working they were back in cramped living quarters. They were scared and yet they kept working. I’m amazed at how selflessly they carried on in the face of such an unknown and deadly threat.

At first, I thought it probably wasn’t so bad to be quarantined on the Diamond Princess. But after interviewing passengers I realized two things - the rooms are really small and as the number of infections rose higher they all felt like sitting ducks. Who would be next to catch the virus?
