New York, USA - In a stunning turn of events at the US Open, unseeded Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp has caused a massive upset by defeating former champion Carlos Alcaraz 6-1, 7-5, 6-4 in the second round on Thursday night.
The world No 3, Carlos Alcaraz, was looking to make it three Grand Slam titles in a row, having triumphed at the French Open and Wimbledon. However, Alcaraz never recovered from a shaky start and made a number of unforced errors throughout the contest, ultimately succumbing to Van de Zandschulp's relentless pressure.
It was Alcaraz's first loss in the second round of a major since 2021 at Wimbledon, where the then-world No 75 fell to second seed Daniil Medvedev.
Botic van de Zandschulp, who has previously been ranked as high as 22 in the world, will next play British No 1 Jack Draper in the third round on Saturday, live on Sky Sports Tennis.
"I don't know what to say right now," Van de Zandschulp said in a post-match interview. "It's an incredible feeling, and I'm so happy that I could pull this off. It's a dream come true."
This monumental upset has sent shockwaves through the tennis world, as Alcaraz was considered a strong favorite to advance to the next round. Van de Zandschulp's victory, however, has proven that anyone can win on any given day in the world of professional tennis.
Stay tuned for more updates on the US Open and its exciting matches!

Rupert's Rise: South African Billionaire Overtakes Dangote as Africa's Richest Person
A Shift in Fortune: Luxury Goods Empire Boosts Rupert's Wealth as Dangote's Assets Suffer
In a surprising turn of events, Johann Rupert, Chairman and CEO of Richemont, has surpassed Aliko Dangote as Africa's richest person, according to the latest Bloomberg Billionaires Index. Mr. Rupert's net worth has increased by $1.9 billion to $14.3 billion, placing him 147th globally, while Mr. Dangote's fortune has fallen by $1.7 billion to $13.4 billion.
The Luxury Goods Empire
Mr. Rupert's wealth is largely attributed to his control of several global luxury brands, including Cartier and Montblanc, through Richemont. His other holdings include Remgro, a South African investment vehicle with stakes in over 30 companies. The demand for luxury goods has remained resilient, boosting Mr. Rupert's net worth.
Economic Challenges
In contrast, Mr. Dangote's wealth is largely tied to assets denominated in the Nigerian naira, which has fallen significantly in value. His business empire, the Dangote Group, has faced production delays at its refinery and supply chain disruptions, contributing to his decreased net worth. The economic challenges facing Nigeria have taken a toll on Mr. Dangote's fortune.
Other African Billionaires
Nicky Oppenheimer, another South African billionaire, ranks third with a net worth of $11.3 billion, followed by Nassef Sawiris, an Egyptian businessman, with a fortune of $9.48 billion. South African investor Natie Kirsh completes the top five African billionaires list with $9.22 billion.
FG Bans Under-18 Candidates from WASSCE, ASUU and NUT React
The Federal Government has announced a new policy banning candidates under the age of 18 from sitting for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and the National Examination Council (NECO). The decision has sparked mixed reactions from education stakeholders, with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) supporting the policy and the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) condemning it.
FG's Reasoning
According to the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, the policy aims to ensure that students complete the required number of years in school before advancing to tertiary education. He explained that the current system allows students to enter university at a very young age, which can lead to emotional immaturity and vulnerability to negative influences.
ASUU's Support
ASUU's National President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, expressed support for the policy, stating that children should follow the standard academic progression and not be rushed into university. He emphasized the importance of emotional maturity and the need to protect students from negative influences.
NUT's Opposition
On the other hand, NUT's Secretary-General, Dr. Mike Ene, condemned the policy, arguing that it is unrealistic and does not take into account exceptional students who may be academically advanced. He warned that the policy could lead to legal challenges and urged the government to rethink it.
Other Reactions
Other education stakeholders, including the National President of the All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools, Mallam Musa Ibrahim, expressed support for the policy, citing the need for emotional maturity and the high failure rates in national examinations. However, the Secretary-General of the Committee of Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian Universities, Prof. Yakubu Ochefu, stated that the committee would meet in September to discuss the policy.

ASUU Issues 21-Day Strike Notice to Federal Government
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has given the Federal Government a 21-day ultimatum to address its demands before embarking on a nationwide strike.
ASUU is seeking the implementation of the renegotiated 2009 agreement, funding for university revitalization, and the removal of its members from the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS) platform. Other issues include university autonomy, proliferation of public universities, and unpaid academic allowances.
The 21-day notice is seen as a final warning before the union takes industrial action, which could disrupt academic activities across Nigerian universities.

Jamaica born, Yvonne Connolly became Britain’s first Black female Headteacher when she was appointed to run the 200 pupil Highgate Primary School, London in 1969. She applied for a headship role after teaching in the UK for six years. Her appointment met with negativity and hostility from both Black and White people. When she turned up to teach, the reaction she got was, but you are Black and her reply will be, yes Of course I am Black but I am also a teacher. Somebody threatened to burn the school down. Her photos were crossed out of newspaper cuttings with nasty comments. She was told to go back to Jamaica. Black people accused her from the letters she received, ‘of selling out to the white establishment. The pioneer Headteacher was resolute and stuck to her guns💪🏾with the belief that “the differences were less than the commonalities that we shared, therefore one had to get on with it”👩🏾🏫👏🏽🙎🏾♀️ #EsosaAihie’sSuccessStories2019
