QUIPS & TIPS TO FACE 2024
2023 was a personal brain-drain, so I raided the internet for some New Year’s encouragement or maybe just a good laugh or two to share. I did none of the work myself. See you next year.

EVENTS
Sunday, December 24. Christmas Eve Day Worship Service with Pastor John Klein, 11 a.m. Sunday Bible Study with Michelle Klein, 10 a.m. “They entered the house and saw the Child with His mother, Mary, and they bowed down and worshipped Him. Then they opened their treasure chests and gave Him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.” (Matthew 2:11) Yes, it’s Christmas. A time for giving and receiving. The best present of all time was the gift Jesus gave to His believers: eternal life. Come to church this Sunday and feel His presence.

2023…
“The world is too much with us.
Getting and spending,
we lay waste our powers.”
Beloved poet William Wordsworth wrote these words around 1802. He was expressing his disillusionment with the materialism associated with the first Industrial Revolution which had totally transformed the culture of his world. Acutely sensitive to the human condition, Wordsworth lamented the loss of spirituality and closeness to nature that he saw waning in the face of ‘progress.’ I think the chaotic Age of Disruption in 2023 may have sent him over the edge.

CHRISTMAS ON THE DOWNBEAT
Christmas is not my holiday, but I’ve always vicariously enjoyed it. Its inspired glorious liturgy, wonderful literature, drama, and timeless classical music (can anyone top “A Christmas Carol,” “It’s A Wonderful Life,” and Tchaikovsky’s “Nutcracker” ballet as the purest distillation of Christmas culture, no matter how familiar they are?) Christmas gives everyone permission to get sloppy and sentimental, and indulge enough supernatural credulity, professed altruism, and unbridled optimism to propel us into a hopeful new year until, burnt out and exhausted, we greet the next Christmas season just in time.

HAMAS IS NOT A ‘REVOLUTIONARY GROUP’
“The Day of Judgement will not come about until Moslems fight the Jews (killing the Jews), when the Jew will hide behind stones and trees. The stones and trees will say O Moslems, O Abdulla, there is a Jew behind me, come and kill him.”

A NOTE OF PROFOUND GRATITUDE
I am overflowing with gratitude today, and I would like to share the wonderful news with all of you. “Who’s Who in America” recently reached out to me with the extraordinary opportunity to be featured in their upcoming 77th edition. The reason for this tremendous honor is my consistent dedication and achievements in the Rabbinic field, consistently ranking among the top 10 percent.

FINDING LIGHT DURING CHALLENGING TIMES
In these challenging times, our hearts are heavy with the ongoing war, which has unfortunately led to a rise in anti-Semitic sentiments. It can be disheartening, and many of us may feel lost amidst the wave of negativity. However, it’s crucial to recognize that the Jewish people have faced persecution throughout history, and time and time again, we have found strength in the belief that G-D is with us.

SAVING THE MAGIC OF THE NIGHT
With light pollution increasing by nearly 10 percent each year, it’s more than just our view of the stars that are being lost. Earlier this year, I met a group of local DarkSky Advocates in Taipei that was racing to protect a firefly colony from extinction. They took action, changing the lights in their local park and turning them off entirely during the breeding season. Today, the firefly colony has rebounded from a handful of individuals to thousands.

A NEW CHAPTER FOR BALLET FOR TOPANGA
Over the past 44 years, Sherry Jason has become known throughout the Canyon for her commitment to teaching ballet to Topanga’s children of all ages. Sherry’s love for teaching Ballet started at a young age with her first classes held in her parent’s garage when she was just eleven years old. Her dedication to teaching ballet continued even as she completed Law School and worked as a Deputy Public Defender in the Juvenile Courts of L.A. County.

SANTA CHECKS IN EARLY WITH TECS STUDENTS
Santa Claus landed early in our canyon this year—bringing joy to students at Topanga Elementary’s Holiday Party. The special guest continued his preparations for the big night by meeting families at the festive event, which took place in the school auditorium on December 8.

LIGHTS IN THE DARK
The Canyon Chronicle pages have been full of children of late. What a rich education they receive at Topanga Elementary Charter School (TECS). Its parents, teachers and kids have gone the extra miles through the Topanga Enrichment Programs (TEP), the school’s booster club that raises funds for resources and staff LAUSD doesn’t pay for. TEP’s president for this 2023-2024 school year, Pete Samson, through the “Schoolhouse Scoop” column, has kept us apprised of the great strides they’ve achieved. (Page 4)

Cultural Arts Program Funding
Benefits TECS Students

The Cultural Arts Passport (CAP) program promoted by LAUSD during the last school year, was by all measures, a success. Schools were able to fund field trips and purchase much needed supplies. At Topanga Elementary Charter School (TECS), we were able to stock our art room, provide teachers with a budget to purchase classroom supplies for art projects and performances and purchase new sound equipment for our auditorium.

KEEP ON HOPING IN THE FREE WORLD
In hopes of making only one stop, we’ve adjusted the shopping list several times, discovering milk listed twice by mistake. Three cans of corn, one creamed, for my ongoing attempt to recreate the corn souffle my mother used to make from the old F***y Farmer Cookbook. Being challenged in culinary arts, I’ve met with varying degrees of success over the years, once sadly producing nothing more than a soupy slop concoction. Some of our family and friends ask of me, “Why bother?”

ARE SWEET POTATOES A CLIMATE-RESILIENT CROP OF THE FUTURE?
They thrive in hot temperatures, within limits.

As the climate warms, hotter temperatures will make it harder to grow certain crops. But you can give thanks for one holiday tradition that’s evolved to withstand the heat
“Sweet potatoes are a tropical crop, so they’re well acclimated to that heat. They prefer heat,” says Lorin Harvey, a sweet potato specialist at Mississippi State University Extension. His state grows almost 500 million pounds of sweet potatoes a year, topped only by North Carolina and California. He says because of their heat tolerance, sweet potatoes hold promise as a climate-resilient crop. So he and other researchers are trying to breed new high-yielding varieties that can tolerate even more heat and less water.

THINK GREEN THIS HOLIDAY
In October, I attended the first-ever Orange County Sustainability Decathlon, where teams of students competed to build a sustainable house that offers solutions to the climate crisis. Co-founders Mike Moodian and Fred Smoller, professors at Chapman University, received a $5 million state grant to give each team $100,000 to build, transport and display these eco-homes at the OC Fairground in Costa Mesa, modeled on the Department of Energy’s Solar Decathlon.

THE YUCK FACTOR
Thanksgiving! It is not by accident that our national holiday centers around food. The original 102 Pilgrims, who arrived on the Mayflower in 1620, suffered malnutrition and disease their first winter in Plymouth. If not for the Wapanoag tribe of native Americans indigenous to the area, surely all the Pilgrims may have perished. As things turned out, the Wapanoag saved them by supplying food to the Pilgrims, including corn which was a new food to the English. The Pilgrims had to try a lot of new foods out of necessity.
