BETROTHED TO A CHARLATAN PREACHER
It was on October 24th, 2017, when the Macon Telegraph reported this story. I vividly remember reading the article. The trial was over, and the guilty verdict had come in. Furthermore, a former pastor of a church had been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. He appeared to read the Bible in court. He was accused of slaying his longtime girlfriend and fiancé. I was the other fiancé. I had been questioned by the authorities, who gave me an account of everything that had happened. I kept playing that tape in my head.

Was there any other way an innocent life could have been saved? They say that hindsight is 20/20, but mine was too foggy to piece together what remained of my life. I read articles and watched the news on television. I was painted simply as the other woman from Atlanta he was also engaged to. Feelings of shame, depression, and nothingness overwhelmed me. To heal from the trauma, I have taken time away from everything and introspectively look over my life all the way from childhood. I have repeatedly played the tape of my life to see the gaps and failures in judgment. I live in fear of dating and trusting again. My life is forever changed.

I'm writing this book hoping that every woman who desires to get married can read and evaluate their own life and avoid the failures of judgment. I do not know that I could've seen the red flags, but maybe my own pain and loneliness got the best of me. As you read my story, I do not want to be a victim. I lived through it. All I wanted was to have a happy family.

Anthony Payton is a native of Hattiesburg, Mississippi. He has served as Senior Pastor/Teacher of Come As You Are Community Church in Fort Wayne, Indiana, for twenty-seven years. Pastor Payton accepted his call to the ministry in 1986. He preached his first sermon on April 14, 1986, at True Love Missionary Baptist Church, in Fort Wayne, under the pastorate of the late Bishop Jesse White. Led by the Holy Spirit in 1995, Pastor Payton accepted the responsibility of stewarding 12 people of the former Greater Come As You Are Missionary Baptist Church. Today, with a membership of over 600 people, the church's home is a 28,000-square-foot state-of-the-art sanctuary.
