How lovely is this! 😊❤ James Mason, boss of Welcome to Yorkshire has found a signed script from a 1989 episode of the BBC's 'All Creatures Great and Small'. James was 'nobbut a lad' when he had a ball filming in the Dales, appearing in lots of scenes with the late great actor Robert Hardy, aka vet Siegfried Farnon from the Herriot books.

James was in our 'Voices from Herriot Country' podcast episode six - 'The Child Actor' - along with Dalesman George Tunstall, who'd been an extra in the same ACGS episode. He's pictured below with a grown up James.

Thanks to all of our interviewees; lovely chats, lovely scenery, some lovely scones! - and, for the later episodes, some much needed respite for two podcast makers from a certain virus That Shall Not Be Named! 😊🙏

Take care all, stay safe. ❤❤

CHEEKY penguins, an angry hippo, a brain damaged fox and an owl with a sense of humour all feature in a new podcast featuring wildlife artist…

THE RISING STAR!

A nice article about Harrogate youngster Imogen Clawson, 'The Rising Star' of our podcast episode seven. She plays farm girl Jenny Alderson, sister to Herriot's 'love interest' Helen, in the new All Creatures TV series on Channel 5.

On set in the Yorkshire Dales, Imogen even had her own trailer - but she had to keep up with her schoolwork too! If you haven't already, please tune in to hear Imogen - and six other episodes of Voices from Herriot Country - on iTunes/Soundcloud/Spotify.

Well done to Yorkshire Vet Julian Norton for speaking up about mental health recently on the BBC's 'The Naked Podcast'.

There's no stigma - or shouldn't be - in admitting life can be difficult. For anyone. At any time. Not just during a pandemic.

The author James Herriot - the world's most famous vet, Alf Wight - had struggles with his mental health decades ago, when society talked about such struggles far less than now. Alf went on to become a Samaritan. Sounds like a pretty decent human being, caring not just for animals, but for people too.

If you listen to 'Voices from Herriot Country' episode 3, 'The Butchers', you'll hear retired butcher Ray Ballard, who knew Alf. The episode touches on mental health.....

Any guesses who the man is in this sweet snap?

It's the author James Herriot, known in everyday life as the vet Alf Wight. It was taken at his old practice in Thirsk (now home to The World Of James Herriot visitor attraction) with Anna, a dog belonging to Rose Dawson, 'The Owl Lady', from podcast episode two.

Poor Anna broke her leg very badly and was back and forth to vet Jim Wight, the son of Alf. At some point during those visits (in the 1980s) Rose was asked if she'd put up some 'temporary' aviaries in her garden for a few injured owls.

Now she has more than 50. Aren't life's twists and turns fascinating......😊😊

"This podcast crew
love a brew,
and we love good ole' Yorkshire Tea.
But we don't love the plastic in its teabags
Does it make its way to the sea?"

(Would go on, but verse is not a strong point!😊)

Yorkshire Tea, Twinings UK and Tetley UK were recently criticised in the BBC's 'War on Plastic' TV programme for having plastic in teabags. It will last for centuries, or even longer. Yuck. No brew is worth that.

The good news? The three firms told the BBC they will have switched to fully biodegradable materials by the end of the year.

"Yay. A very big yay!
that's made our day!"...

IT'S GOOD TO TALK......
........did you know that vet Alf Wight, aka author James Herriot, was a Samaritan, listening patiently, without judgement, to other people's problems?

Alf, who went on to become world-famous with his much-loved books (a tonic to so many, including now) had struggled with his own mental health but not talked about his worries enough. This was decades ago, when thoughts and feelings weren't aired so much.

Thankfully the Samaritans charity, from its beginnings in the 1950s, is still around today. There are thousands of kind souls with sympathetic ears, just like Alf.....🙏🙏🙏🙏

VOICES FROM HERRIOT COUNTRY - EPISODE 5!

At last! Episode 5, 'The Carpet Man', is finally with you! 😊

Yorkshire businessman Bill Calvert, MBE, is the star this time of 'Voices from Herriot Country', our podcast marking the 50th anniversary of the first James Herriot book.

On a sunny autumn day, months before lockdown, we had a lovely morning with Bill at his home near Thirsk, not far from where author James Herriot - vet Alf Wight - used to work. Bill told us about his fascinating life, including long, meandering journeys with his grandfather in a horse-drawn 'gypsy' caravan.....

You can listen and subscribe on Soundcloud, iTunes, Spotify and Google.

As always, if you enjoy this episode, and others, we'd be delighted if you'd donate a little something to the NHS or a medical establishment wherever you happen to be.....🙏😊

‘Voices from Herriot Country’ -- a new podcast marking the 50th anniversary of the first James Herriot book

We hope you enjoy ‘Voices from Herriot Country’, where you’ll hear heartwarming stories from characters in 21st century Yorkshire, half a century after Alf Wight - aka author James Herriot - published his first book about life as a rural vet. It wasn’t long before he was a household name with viewers too, who enjoyed seeing his tales come to life in the TV series ‘All Creatures Great and Small’.

Now, wherever you are in the world, you can listen to folk who could have stepped off the pages of a Herriot book - and some of them knew the vet-turned-author personally....

‘Voices from Herriot Country’ is available on iTunes, Spotify, Soundcloud and Google.
