A truthful peek into the lives of expats in India.
The funny, philosophical odyssey of a middle-aged father and teacher caught up in a domestic and diplomatic drama in Delhi. This graphic novel is based on the true story of a family navigating the trials and challenges of life in a fascinating foreign world. It explores the age-old philosophical question: How did I end up in this mess?
If you have ever travelled or lived overseas, you will immediately relate to the challenges and triumphs illustrated in this book. Rugnetta is honest and humble, and the result is a story that transcends travel literature and forces the readers to contemplate their own choices, wondering which decisions were their own, and which were “Beyond Choice”.

From the Inside Flap
It’s a fascinating family adventure book filled with humour and experiences you might haven’t encountered. The images are nice, and the book is well constructed. It brings out the philosophy and history of India through Adam’s adventures in the country. Beyond Choice by Adam Rugnetta is already out on Amazon.

I sat down and knitted for some time - my usual resource under discouraging circumstances."
― Isabella L. Bird

One of the most remarkable woman globetrotter of 19th century,
Isabella Bird, an inspiring British explorer, writer, photographer, and naturalist of her time. She was the first woman to be elected Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, UK.

During her travel to India in Feb 1889, Bird visited Ladakh on the borders of Tibet, and Kashmir. The Maharajah of Kashmir gave her a piece of land on which she built a sixty-bed hospital and a dispensary for women.

She further joined a group of British soldiers for her trip to the Middle East. Interestingly, her trip to the Middle East and further was considered as an early example of corporate sponsorship by Henry Wellcome's company in London. And all this when she was 60.

Every week, we share an amazing and inspiring expat story – the voice of the expatriates at "We The Expats"

How to enjoy the art of slow living in India.
When I talk about slow-living, I do not mean slacking or being late, that’s just being lazy. What I mean about a slow-paced-lifestyle is rushing only when needed, and saying no to charging around all day, every day. It’s about being more mindful and “taking a step back and start enjoying life being conscious of sensory profusion,” according to Wikipedia. It’s basically about finding balance in our everyday lives. Not the easiest thing to do when we have high-pressure jobs and deadlines to meet, but a necessity if we do.

I feel the need to start the next section by saying, I am not an expert on slow-living. However, I do enjoy that kind of lifestyle, and try my best to slow down whenever I feel anxious or whenever I feel burnt-out.

“There was once a monkey who lived on a tree by the river. He was alone, but he was happy. One day, a crocodile swam up from the river and onto the tree looking for food. He was very hungry. The monkey offered him some fruits that grew on his tree. The crocodile thanked him and soon, they became good friends.”

“After week three, everything seemed fuzzy, honestly, I don’t even know what week we are in anymore. There are a few things I’ve learned: 1. I am a terrible roti maker. 2. Making butter chicken isn’t easy. 3. Do not trust shady alcohol vendors. 4. Politeness and kindness can go a long way. 5. No matter how much you hate schedules, they are important. 6. The definition of a productive day pre-pandemic, will not be the same during the pandemic. So, it helps to be a little easy on ourselves.” Read as Mimi Ruivah shares how she’s been spending time during the lockdown.

Cooking is therapeutic and cooking new recipes adds an element of fun to the whole unwinding process.
We figured when in India, breakfast as Indians do! We are sharing the recipe for a quintessential Marathi breakfast with a new age twist, bread Poha.
Heat some oil and add asafoetida, mustard seeds, curry leaves, and red chillies. Saute them for a while and add boiled carrots & peas. If you have roasted peanuts, add them into the mix and cook until they turn golden brown. Add turmeric powder, and salt and mix well. Now, add bread slices, mix them well, and sprinkle some water over it. Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot.

Share what you are cooking with us, and we will feature you on our page.
