🚀🚀 NEW EPISODE ALERT🚀🚀

Hello and welcome to the belated month of January episode. Now for myself "escaping consumerism" has involved thinking about how I can spend my money on things more useful to my health and future. One such way has been budgeting robustly and investing in the stock market. Anuj () is a colleague of mine at a famous East Midlands hospital with a strong interest in investing and in this episode we seek to dissect some of the very basics. Anuj very eloquently explains what is investing, what a fund/etf is vs shares, as well as basic investing strategies based on your personality type. Now, what we speak about is of course not explicit financial advise (for legal reasons more than anything). However, as a wise person once told me "no-one cares about your money more than you". This episode will therefore hopefully provide you some confidence into how we can begin to invest and allow you to make your own informed decisions around finance and savings.

Now is a relatively new IG page but increasingly popular. Anuj goes to great lengths to provide an array of interesting and well-thoughtout concepts and stock picks. His page is definitely one I would recommend and a great point of call for understanding more about the stock market.

Hope you enjoy the episode.

Out on Spotify, soundcloud, apple music etc. See the bio and story for links!

Next guest on the show is . Releasing later next week and continuing on with my theme of investing in yourself as opposed to physical stuff, I speak to my good friend Anuj about the basic principles of investing. For me, one of the best ways to spend less money on clothes and other possessions has been to focus on investing in my future. More info to come over the coming week. Keep your eyes peeeeeeeled

💥💥💥 New podcast 💥💥💥

Hello all,

Belated happy holidays and happy new year. The Christmas season and indeed my life since graduating has been marked with periods of spending... End of the month comes around and I'm thinking about the next holiday, the next racket, the next pair of shoes.

In this episode, I begin to unpack consumerism and materialism. I look into what materialism represents, why we are driven towards materialistic tendencies, why they might be bad for us and how we can challenge it.

I think we all know that money doesn't buy happiness but understanding the research may give us insights into why we are the way we are. So join me for a brief chat on consumerism and learn why investing in "stuff" isn't always investing in yourself.

Love as always,

Frankie x

Almost a month ago, I wrapped up my IBD series with a conversation with Pizey about his experience with Crohn's disease. Pizey had some really good closing remarks about how he has managed his chronic disease. His sentiment about breaking things down applies to a host of problems in life.

I'm rounding up the year pretty soon. Radio tomorrow and one more podcast. Roll on 2022. 🚀

So on Tuesday last week, I finished my first rotation in gastroenterology.

Just some reflections:
1️⃣ A great team really makes the days fun and pushes you to be a better doctor. I was super lucky to be the most junior member of the team but surrounded by seniors who were all outstanding in their own right. From F2s all the way up to consultants, I felt supported and just able to be myself more than anything.
2️⃣ Gastro really is an incredible specialty. You deal with a huge range of individuals some of them with very complex problems. I learnt a huge amount of the specific management of conditions such as decompensated cirrhosis, IBD and more...
3️⃣ Leaving jobs kinda sucks. I think the nature of a training programme is that just as you start to get settled, the rug is  metaphorically swept away.
4️⃣ The junior team have troubles keeping their eyes open in photos. Mainly May 🤑

Regardless, thanks to the DDU team and roll on the next 4 months! 👨‍⚕️

Rounding up my IBD mini-series, I chat with my old friend Pizey.

Now Pizey has had his own individual journey with IBD. Whilst Crohn's and UC are separate entities, this episode seeks to show the similar diseases are experienced and dealt with in different ways.

Individuals' own personalities, their background, their severity of disease all play into the overall experience of a chronic disease.

Overall, Pizey's light-hearted and somewhat comedic approach recollecting his experience with Crohn's provides some key insights into the mentioned differences and allows for a more holistic understanding of how IBD can present.

Hello!

Following on with my IBD mini-series, I speak to Lewis, a very old friend of mine who has been diagnosed with ulcerative colitis for over a decade.

In this episode we delve into his journey with UC. The ups, the downs, the effects on his mental health and the continuing impact of the disease on his life.

It was truly a privilege to have Lewis on the podcast and I think this conversation gives a unique perspective on not just IBD and UC but on chronic disease as a whole.

👨‍⚕️ Inflammatory Bowel Disease 👨‍⚕️

🎧🎧 Hello and yet again it is podcast time! 🎧🎧

This month I am back talking about inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

I have decided to speak about this because:
1️⃣ I am currently a junior doctor based on a gastroenterology ward so I see lots of patients with IBD.
2️⃣ I know lots of individuals whom live with inflammatory bowel disease.

So this episode forms the first part of my two-monthly series on IBD and this episode is all the basics.

1️⃣ Inflammatory Bowel Disease involves a spectrum of autoimmune conditions affecting the bowel and consists mainly of two conditions Crohn’s disease and Ulcerative colitis.
2️⃣ These are common diseases with UC affecting about 1 in 400 people in the UK whereas Crohn's about 1 in 700 people in the UK.
3️⃣ Whilst separate in many ways, both tend to cause profuse diarrhoea and abdominal pain as well as spectrum of other sequelae.
4️⃣ This is primarily a chronic disease of younger people. However, can affect older individuals as well (but less commonly).

If any of you know individuals who have Crohn’s or UC this podcast is likely to be highly informative. In this I breakdown the subtypes, I explain the basics of the symptoms, how we investigate these disease and finally how we treat these diseases. I give a brief rundown of what the future may look like in terms of treatment and then just give my perspective on Crohn’s and UC.

Realistically, any chronic disease represent a huge change in any individuals life. However, Crohn’s and UC as diseases of younger people can be highly damaging to the education and social life of individuals who are meant to be in some of their most formative years. It was this in part that spurred me to do this episode.

💥Perfectionism in practice💥
One month on and I am still talking about perfectionism?? Yes indeed. So I have decided to experiment with a slightly different format whereby:

1️⃣ Month 1: Ted Talk with myself taking a deep dive into the literature and giving a short and sweet summary.
2️⃣ Month 2: A personal feel usually with a guest with relevant or interesting viewpoints surrounding the months previous subject.

I feel that this format will allow me to still get a bit deep in the literature but additionally keep true to what this whole thing is about which is being personal and relatable. Furthermore, it takes a bit of pressure off my spare time into something manageable.

Update over- this episode.

🔥This week I am joined again by the lovely Sanah- A fellow Neuroscience graduate. Sanah is someone who like me grapples with a bit of perfectionism in her everyday life. In the episode, we dissect what perfectionism looks like in our own lives. We think about why we might be perfectionists and why it is both sometimes a positive and a negative 🔥

Overall, we come to a collective conclusion that perfectionism can sometimes lead to us being exceedingly goal-orientated whereby the “journey” is somewhat lost on us and furthermore, we contrive little satisfaction in achieving. Ultimately keeping perfectionism in reasonable limits involves:

➡️ Challenging our inner-self-critic,
➡️ Dealing with failure in a compassionate way
➡️ Seeking advise from friends is central to ensuring that perfectionism does not get the better of us.

💥💥I am back on tomorrow with some more tunes and waffle. Been a super busy time starting FY1 and doing my first set of nights has been an experience to say the least.💥💥

🎧 In spite of this, I still really enjoy having downtime to do creative things such as putting together a mix and working on the podcast.

➡️ I've got a new episode of the podcast due Friday as well so keep your eyes peeled for that!

Tunes from and more.

💥*Perfectionism*💥

➡️Perfectionism is a complex personality trait characterised by high personal standards and self-criticism if one fails to meet these standards. My episode today is just a brief run of the scientific literature considering why in popular culture, particularly in academic and working settings, we are so quick to answer “perfectionism is my biggest weakness”.

➡️Now when we consider why we choose that answer that marks the heart of the problem. We answer in this way as a means to show a weakness can be a strength. Nevertheless, this clearly emphasises that perfectionism can be a double-edged sword.

➡️Within the literature, and over the past 30 years, perfectionism is increasingly more prevalent so this topic is never really more pertinent. It is something I find myself struggling with and I was fascinated learning about the different facets to perfectionism, as well as understanding how perfectionism can predispose to mental illness, stress and burnout.

➡️After doing my research, I found this very solid news article by the BBC and if you want a short easy read about perfectionism then this may be worth your time.
https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20180219-toxic-perfectionism-is-on-the-rise

➡️So yeah enjoy a brief chat about perfectionism, its strengths, its weaknesses and whether its really a good thing in the workplace!

➡️Moving forwards, I will probably aim to do a simple little TedTalk about a topic that interests me and then follow up the next month with a chat with someone who can chat about the topic and add something or give it some personal flavours!

🎶 NEW EPISODE- self-growth 🎶

Hello all and welcome back!

All things music and all things medicine.

Today I am joined by the lovely Sanah Ali. Sanah is a friend of mine who messaged me about discussing self-growth. Myself and Sanah met about 2 ish years ago whilst we were both studying Neuroscience at the University of Bristol. Since then, we have remained somewhat in touch and I was delighted when she messaged me with this idea for a radio show.

Self-growth in your 20s is a huge topic and this is by no means a comprehensive guide about how to tackle your 20s.

Personally, my major aspects of growth have centred upon my confidence, acceptance and developing my identity. For me, there aren’t single events that have led to this and growing up/making mistakes have allowed me to work out what is what.
I think there are a lot of expectations about what university and your 20s should look like. These arise from a whole array of influences and sometimes trying to reconcile these expectations with reality can be difficult. Nevertheless, time moves on and sculpting out your own goals separate from what you “think” your life should look life has been key for my happiness.

Overall, this is simply a conversation between two people about their unique experiences with university, leaving university, change and growing up. If you think this is for you give this a listen!

Some of links below but its also available on Spotify and apple music.

So... Unannounced BUT I have taken a month off. There is no episode and has been very little social media engagement with me for the month of May. I apologise and I will be returning to the online radio waves properly in June.

Social media and this part-time hobby can be somewhat exhausting sometimes and realistically this is just a hobby. Something I do for fun.
I am very lucky to be returning from Portugal and even luckier to have visited it with my brothers. I always get told I am lucky to get on so well with my family and shoutout my sis Claire who missed out due to exams. However, now is a nice moment to reflect and be grateful that I have such a great friendships with all my siblings. Furthermore, I am always welcomed into their friend groups and get to meet wicked people like Dan, Inam and Mo. Overall, the trip was a blast and a much needed break after some hugely stressful weeks but nevertheless keep your eyes peeled for the content....

*  Late to the party but here goes-  "I'm a doctor"  *

7 years ago I started studying Neuroscience at the University of Leicester. At the time, my only goal was to get onto medicine. I had missed my A Level grades and this was the only choice- A back route into medicine. I worked hard that year. I still to this day am unsure if I had failed to transfer to medicine; would I have given up? Failing to get on previously had really knocked my confidence and I was pretty unsure I could take another hit.

I got onto medicine and interestingly I felt quite deflated. For years at secondary school, I had placed getting onto medicine on a pedestal and being "here" felt the same. In reality, I think hitting any big goal takes readjustment. Getting onto medicine, wasn't going to solve my anxieties about not being "enough". For me personally, I needed to do some work on myself, reassess my goals and begin working towards the next thing.

Over the course of medical school (and life), you do this process continually. You achieve something and then reassess. It is the process in which the most satisfaction is contrived. It is those days which become weeks where you truly grow as a person.

My success is realistically a product of multiple factors but almost definitely attributable to all the numerous friends and family who have supported me through my failures. So here is to them! I am really nothing without you all. Firstly, to my pals from home- you always have been in my corner and have allowed me to become confident in myself. Then to the Leicester and Bristol lot (you all know who you are); From the lodge gang in first year through to these final months in Clarendon Park, you have helped me really grow into the person I am today. Then finally to my family, I love you all so much and I cannot begin to express my gratitude.

Here is to the next part of my life and big congratulations to all my other coursemates celebrating as well!

Hello all,

https://linktr.ee/Repeat_Prescription_Radio

This week I am fortunate to be joined by yet another one of my exceedingly talented friends. Pedr is a Chemistry graduate and PhD student at the University of Oxford. Almost 3 years ago, Pedr set it upon himself to cycle till “east became west” and nearly completed a full circuit of the globe.

I think when I consider Pedr’s journey, like many others I am impressed but perhaps more so I am intrigued. Why a bike? What possesses an individual to do such a hard task? And what do you learn by cycling that far? In this episode, Pedr answers all these questions and discusses various themes from adversity, community, to fears of being alone, to connecting with nature, and his own theory of “relativity”.

Pedr’s drive and determination is inspirational. For him, the fear of not trying squashed any fears surrounding accomplishing his goals. Importantly, he recognises that you do not necessarily need to cycle through 46 countries to learn the things he has learnt. Moreover, he stresses the importance of engaging with your passions and pushing yourself outside your comfort zones are crucial for a fulfilling and happy life.

*Exciting news*

Firstly, I am done with exams. Much wow. I'll stop speaking about those now.

Secondly, I am joining the incredible array of DJs and artists over on . Whilst many of you still enjoy my long form radio shows with music and a podcast. I have been looking to shorten the episodes as they have been getting super long. My monthly lowertone show will aim to showcase all facets of music underground and otherwise. I have put together a pretty nice selection of tunes for the show tomorrow which is a mixture of classical music and ambient tunes.

Love as always guys. I need a rest now smh.

*NEW EPISODE*

https://www.mixcloud.com/Repeat_Prescription_Radio/14-social-smoking/

So this may be an unpopular one for a multitude of reasons but primarily because young people are probably the biggest offenders for social smoking. However, I think there is a general belief that the odd cigarette now and that isn’t too detrimental to your health.

Now my (very professional) definition of social smoking would be “someone who smokes on a night out”. Within the literature, the definitions for social smoking are vague and vary from occasional ci******es to 1 cigarette a day and even up to 10 ci******es a day. You can see where I am going with this- The research is sparse and understudied.

Health effects of “social smoking”:
1) Increased risk of lung cancer (and other forms of cancer)- I think this is fairly unsurprising and it is widely known that lung cancer is linked with smoking. Nevertheless, it appears that social smokers are at a significantly higher risk compared with non-smokers. 5 times risk in females and 3 times the risk in males.
2) Increased risk of cardiovascular disease (stroke, heart attacks, high blood pressure)- With cancer, the more you smoke, the more likely it is you get cancer so in this sense social smoking is better than “full-blown smoking”. However, for cardiovascular disease the relationship seems to reflect more of a “log-shaped” curve whereby even one cigarette appears to dramatically increase you risk and subsequent increases only show smaller increases in risk (check out google for a visual representation).

In my previous episode I spoke about making changes and smoking is a notoriously hard habit to break. From a neuroscience perspective, ni****ne powerfully recruits dopamine causing strong associations between smoking and drinking. Paradoxically though, it appears to also engage in a little cycle whereby it will dampen dopamine highs from alcohol thus encouraging you to have another drink. You see where the cycle goes! Additionally, cigarette promote wakefulness, so they may be more tempting if you are feeling sleepy after one to many.

As with all these things, I’m just giving you the information. Maybe this information will hit at the right time just before pubs opening. Who knows?

Music from Empire Of The Sun, Roy Ayers and KOKOROKO in the first half.

Love guys n gals!

Hello all,

https://www.mixcloud.com/Repeat_Prescription_Radio/13-lifestyle-medicine-making-changes-with-dr-jono-goldney/

My once monthly dose is here. This episode features a range of music from country to soul as well as a spicy leftfield mix. The focus of this show is a discussion about lifestyle medicine with one of my pals: Dr Jono Goldney.

Jono is an academic doctor who has a special interest in lifestyle medicine. In the past, he has pioneered schemes promoting the health benefits of physical activity, and more recently, he has been accepted to undertake an academic clinical fellowship studying the health benefits of lifestyle interventions in diabetes.

Much of the stuff I talk about in my previous shows falls under the realm of lifestyle medicine, and in many ways this could have been an introductory episode to my podcast. However, I digress. Mine and Jono's conversation centres on making changes in context of the six pillars of lifestyle medicine: Food, sleep, stress, movement, substance and relationships.

Research supports the idea that making sustained changes is hard. I think my hope from that episode is that by gaining an understanding of why the 6 pillars are important and why maintaining behaviours is hard, you can begin making changes.

This episode is aimed at both doctors and the individuals who are looking to make changes. I hope you enjoy a clinically relevant episode.

As usual show notes in the description. Like, share, follow, tell a friend and see the comments for link to Spotify, Apple Music and all the relevant references!
