WEIRD MARRIAGES - PART 1

PEOPLE MARRYING THEMSELVES

- Man & Himself: In 2007, Liu Ye of China decided it would be better to marry himself than be single. The best part is that he married a foam-board cutout of himself dressed in a lovely red dress. Ye admits to being narcissistic, but said of his nuptials, “There are many reasons for marrying myself, but mainly to express my dissatisfaction with reality.”

Herself & Wife: Marrying oneself is not just for the guys, though. In 2003, artist Jennifer Hoes married herself in the Netherlands on her 30th birthday. It was a large affair in front of friends and family. Hoes said, “Why not pledge allegiance to yourself in a ceremony, as the basis for completion of your life and relationships?”

Only & Only: The same thing happened in October of 2010 when 30-year-old Chen Wei Yih married herself in Taiwan. She decided she was at a good point in her life to marry, and was receiving social pressure to do so, but had found no suitable partner. She solved the problem by marrying herself.

66 WEDDINGS BUT HAVE YET TO TIE THE KNOT

A British couple decide to take a trip around the world. Sounds wonderful right? What if they decided to get married across the globe in traditional wedding ceremonies county de jour? It makes for some uniquely out-of-the-box thinkers and a hopelessly romantic couple.

After being friends for over 8 years, Alex Pelling and Lisa Gant from Manchester, England, began dating. They lived together for a year and couldn't decide where they wanted to get married.

One day they decided to follow their dream to relocate to Australia, but what transpired from that brave move was a trip around the world showcasing wedding venues in an effort to find the perfect wedding venue for them. They decided to start a blog to help other couples to decide if one of the wedding ceremonies they were to undertake would work for them. Their goal was not to "legally" tie the knot (at least not until they found their perfect venue) while experiencing exceptional and unique wedding locations.

As of August 2014, they have had a total of 66 weddings over the course of the three (3) years they travelled and have yet to be legally bound. Wedding ceremonies have included the following:

- A traditional wedding ceremony in their hometown of Didsbury, Manchester, England.

- The couple got hitched on an Air Tahiti flight.

- Hilton Waikaloa Village in Hawaii

- A traditional Peruvian wedding.

- A Guatemalan wedding that took place on the terrace of a hotel with stunning views of the three volcanoes. The Xaman lit a fire of ci**rs, rose petals and candles and made offerings to the Gods and held the ceremony in Mayan.

- A traditional Colombian farmer style wedding where Lisa arrived at on a donkey and they had a sheep as a guest 'as it is tradition'.

- A ceremony at Mitad del Mundo (the middle of the world) in Ecuador, where artist Cristobal Ortega held the ceremony.

- A Texan ranch wedding held in a stunning location at the Las Brisas Farm.

- A wedding in Seattle at Pike Place Market.

- A pagan wedding ceremony in Lithuania.

- A Turkish wedding where Lisa participated in a henna ceremony and was followed by the couple getting married on a boat with the ancient tombs as the background.

- An El Salvador beach wedding.

- And most recently, in Pakistan.

UNIQUE AND INTERESTING WEDDING FACTS

Child Brides

As disturbing as this fact might be, there are places in the world that child brides are quite common. According to the International Center For Research On Women , there are five countries where over 60% of the brides are under 18. They are Central African Republic (61%), Guinea (63%), Bangladesh (66%), Chad (72%) and Niger (75%).

The Top Five Youngest Documented

5. Nujood Ali - 10 years old. Nujood is from Yemen and is quite well--known for her rebellion for being forced into the marriage at such a young age. She has written her memoirs bringing awareness to the situation and in an effort to help the cause in stopping it in the future. She was bought from her family by a man in his thirties. They were married in 2008. After months of abuse, she was able to divorce the man while she was still 10 years old.

4. Margaret Beaufort - 7 years old. It has been quite common throughout history to be married for political or financial gain. Margaret was born into British nobility, and she was married to John de la Pole for that reason. They were both 7 years old; however the marriage was annulled 3 years later due to family differences.

3. Aisha - 6 years old. Old Islamic tradition states that Aisha was either six or seven years old when she married Muhammad. Aisha bin Abi Bakr is believed to have married the prophet in 619, when Muhammad would have been around 49 years old. The marriage was not consummated until several years later, when the girl was 10. She stayed married to the religious leader until his death, in 632. The marriage was seen to have political benefits as Aisha was the daughter of Abdullah ibn Abi Quhafa, better known as Abu Bakr; he was a friend of Muhammad and came from a wealthy family.

2. Anne de Mowbray: 5 years old. Another English political marriage from the 15th century takes a place on this list, demonstrating how acceptable child marriages once were in the history of the western world. Anne had a tragic life; born in December 1472, her father, John de Mowbray (the 4th Duke of Norfolk), died in 1476 when she was just three. In 1478, the five-year-old was married to another child, the four-year-old Richard of Shrewsbury (Duke of York and son of King Edward IV). The marriage was short and woeful: Anne died in 1481 at the age of eight and her husband, Richard, later became famous as one of the Princes in the Tower. The nine-year-old boy spent the rest of his life in the Tower of London and is presumed to have been murdered at a young age on the orders of his ruthless uncle, Richard III.

1. Fatima Mangre: 4 years old. Fatima Mangre is an Indian girl who was married off in 2009 at the tender age of just four years old. Mangre was married to a boy who was only 10 years old himself; she lived with her family until aged eight, when her husband came to collect her. However, the marriage was annulled after Fatima’s father had a change of heart and refused to let her husband take the child, making her the youngest divorcee in the world at the age of eight. Fatima’s father went on to blame social pressure as the reason for his reckless decision to allow the marriage in the first place.

- Vintage Glamour - What a great way to show off your love for all things vintage than by showing up at your wedding in a 40s inspired wedding gown. Whatever era is chosen, you can really up the ante with that era's music and bargain basement finds for props. Oh and don't forget the classic "get-a-way" car :)

UNIQUE AND INTERESTING WEDDING FACTS

Strangest Places To Get Married - Part 2

- In Mid-air: Forget the church: Marriage in the Sky offers a 20-seat, 42’-by-25’ platform hoisted 164 feet into the air. This marriage mobile can anchor wherever there’s 5,000 square feet of secure surface area, so the sky’s the limit for location (think the Grand Canyon, a Venetian canal, or above the Sahara Desert), as long as your preferred landscape sits in one of 15 countries where the company has an operating license. Afterward, many couples decide, quite literally, to take the plunge—with a bungee jump off the platform.

- A Shark Tank: Atlantis Marine World in Riverhead, Long Island, is a common spot for local weddings—but it takes an uncommon couple to opt for the aquarium’s 120,000-gallon shark tank. On June 6, 2010, that’s what April Pignataro and Michael Curry, from New York City, did. Wearing helmets that enabled underwater breathing and communication, and decked out in custom-created wet suits (white for her; black for him), the expert-certified divers enclosed themselves in a steel cage and were lowered into the water occupied by 10 skulking (but unaggressive) sand tiger and nurse sharks. A minister on terra firma administered the vows via transmitter radio.

- A Nascar Race: You don’t have to be Dale Earnhardt Jr. to find love in the fast lane. Last Valentine’s Day, 31 NASCAR-loving couples said “I do” at the Daytona International Speedway; thousands of fans, friends, and family looked on from the stands. One pair, Bryan Willey and Stacee Kennedy, even exchanged rings NASCAR-style: with tattoos. The track also offers nongroup wedding packages that include two race passes, a bottle of champagne, a notary public, and the option to hold your reception in a room overlooking the famous track.

- In A Chapel Made Of Ice: In the chapel at Quebec’s Hôtel de Glace, where temperatures hover around 25 degrees and there’s iced champagne, two ice glasses, and, for your guests, ice benches draped in animal skins. The allure of marrying in a sparkling crystalline palace is clear (pun intended!), but what’s a shivering bride to wear? Just ask designer Corinne Markey, whose Marie-Ange Collection—created just for Hôtel de Glace brides—features floor-length gowns with fuzzy lining, fur-trimmed hoods, and thick white capes.

- A Nudist Colony: Nudist notary Carolyn Hawkins performs about 10 clothing-optional weddings each year in Florida alone—and, she says, they’re becoming more popular. At Cypress Cove Nudist Resort & Spa, in Kissimmee, FL, brides and grooms wearing only their birthday suits tie the knot under a decorated arch on the shore of scenic Lake Toho. Afterward, folks retire to Cheeks Bar and Grill for au naturel dining and dancing.

UNIQUE AND INTERESTING WEDDING FACTS

Strangest Places To Get Married - Part 1

- Fast Food Restaurant : When hipster groom Paul Brooks of Normal, IL, suggested a Taco Bell wedding to his Australian girlfriend, Caragh Brooks, in January 2009, he meant it as a joke. But she said yes. During the dining-room ceremony, for which employees displayed hot-sauce packages reading “Will You Marry Me?,” the duo wore dark purple (him) and hot pink (her)—Taco Bell’s official colors.

- A Rollercoaster: New York’s Coney Island is beloved for its foot-long hot dogs, two-and-a-half-mile boardwalk, and 83-year-old wooden Cyclone, one of the world’s most famous roller coasters. Each year, a handful of nostalgic New Yorkers and/or coaster enthusiasts get hitched on this scream-inducing, knee-knocking ride. Marriages here are distinctly DIY, but usually the ceremony is conducted at the boarding platform, with the wedding party crammed into the 12 tiny cars, followed by the newlyweds’ first spin on the Cyclone. Afterward, revelers feast on funnel cakes.

A Doughnut Shop: Since 2003, Oregonians have lined up around the block to get into downtown Portland’s funky Voodoo Doughnut, where toppings include Cap’n Crunch cereal, maple-glazed bacon, and Tang. The shop’s weddings are equally unconventional. Choose a nonbinding “intentional commitment” ceremony (one of which involved two cats getting “meowied”), or the “Whole Shebang,” which includes an in-house Universal Life minister (no, not a voo doo priest), coffee and doughnuts, and round-trip airfare

- A Dollar Store: It was September 9th, 2009, and to celebrate the numeric kismet of the date (9/9/09), the owners of the Los Angeles–based 99 Cents Only Stores went all out: nine lucky engaged couples—picked at random from 2,999 applicants—got married in quick succession from 8:09 a.m. to 9:09 a.m., in aisle 9 of the Hollywood branch. A crafty local designer who calls herself the Discount Store Diva used the store’s inventory (think doilies, disposable cutlery, and plastic flowers) to decorate the space and create the brides’ white dresses, which she declared to be “Chanel-inspired.” And, if any of these marriages doesn’t work out, the dollar-store weddings come with a receipt for returns.

- Thw Titanic: Tennessee is home to Dollywood, hillbilly-themed mini-golf, and, recently, a Titanic Museum—a Disneyesque reproduction of one-half of the 1912 liner. “Captain Smith,” the white-bearded helmsman of “the unsinkable ship,” blesses unions on an exact replica of the gorgeous Grand Staircase, under a 25-foot glass dome. Once the First Class Dining Room opens for receptions in December, costumed waiters will also serve actual Titanic dishes, such as poached salmon with mousseline sauce and Waldorf pudding, on replica gold-plated china.

UNIQUE AND INTERESTING WEDDING FACTS

FUNNY THINGS TO HAPPEN AT WEDDINGS

- A bride recounts this tale: I thought my hairdo was falling out midway through the reception so I was on a mad hunt for hairspray. So of course, I ran to the bridal bathroom basket my sister made, grabbed the huge aerosol can and gave my head a long, stiff spray all over. As I went in for the second wave to ensure that super-stiff hold, I noticed a powder fresh scent in the air.... turns out my hair was now coated with a super thick layer of DEODORANT!

- At my brother’s wedding my Dad’s phone went off during the ceremony, not once but twice! Playing the Flintstones theme song.

- The reception started off terribly as the MC, one of the bride's cousins, introduced the couple as "Please welcome, Mr. and Mrs. Terry........" Awkward pause as everyone realizes she forgot the groom's last name.

- I shoot a lot of weddings, but the best one I heard was "Well, she's moving in with Dave now, so it looks like all the ladies will have to give up their keys to your place." Silence. "Ladies, I'm not kidding... give them up". Every woman in the place gets up, walks to the head table, and drops a key in front of him. The last one was a very old family friend who, with her back to everyone, opens her blouse and flashes the guy. It ends up, she was wearing a shirt underneath that said "Everyone thinks I'm flashing you right now".

- My cousin's wedding was on June 20st. Her dad's opening line: "As you know, today is the summer solstice, which means it's the longest day of the year - but don't forget this important piece of information! (a few seconds pause) It's also the shortest night"

- I was best man at my friend's wedding. When it came time for my speech, I pulled a paper out of my pocket and began reading about what a wonderful husband he was going to be, how he was loyal, handsome, kind, how he was loved by everyone..etc. Then, I squinted at the paper, stumbled a little over the words-turned to my best friend the groom, handed him the paper and announced, "I can't read your handwriting". It brought the house down.

UNIQUE AND INTERESTING WEDDING FACTS

WEIRDEST WEDDING CUSTOMS

OK, so I know that weird is relative and that what seems weird to us may not be to the eyes of the beholder. I mean, if you were raised thinking a chicken is a duck, then a chicken will always (most often) be a duck.

- Blackening The Bride: Scotland. A bride-to-be is often celebrated by her friends and family by "blackening" her. She is "showered with affection" with things such as curdled milk, spoiled food, dead fish, tar, mud, etc. Literally they throw this stuff over her. She is then tied to a tree. After much waiting, she is untied and then taken out for a night of drinking. The belief is that if she can handle it, then she can handle anything she may come across during her marriage.

- Preplanned Crying: China - Tujia Tribes. For one month before a bride's wedding day, a woman starts crying for one hour a day. During the month, she is joined by various members of her family (all female) and by the end of the month, all the women are crying. It is said to be a "joy" to hear the different tones in the women's crying making the wedding a "joyous" occasion.

- Marrying A Tree: India. Women in parts of India born under a certain astrological influence are said to be "cursed" for marriage. It is stated that she will cause her husband great distress and heart break during the marriage. So in order to break the curse, she must first be married to a tree and then the tree cut down.

- Beating The Groom's Feet: Korea. Apparently men are concerned with the groom's ability to NOT disappoint on his wedding night. To prevent this, the groom's feet are flogged with a fish or a cane. It can be painful, but quick; however, they seem to think it is more fun than cruel.

- Chick Liver Tradition: Inner Mongolia, China. The bride and groom in selecting a wedding date, must take the life of a baby chick while holding the knife together. They dissect it to see if the liver is "fortunate" in appearance. They must keep going till they find one of satisfactory appearance. Not sure how this relates to their "date" of marriage. Perhaps good luck or cursed?

- Going Green - NO TOILETS: Indonesia. (Ok, I have to say seriously?) The wedding couple during their honeymoon are restricted to what they eat or drink and their use of any "facilities" is strictly limited. It is supposed to bless the couple with a happy marriage full of healthy babies.

- Traditional Shoe Thieves: India. In some parts of India, a groom must remove his shoes before coming to the marriage altar. His family is supposed to "protect" his shoes while her family is supposed to try to "steal" his shoes. If the bride's family steals them, then the groom will ultimately have to pay a ransom to get them back.

- Cross Dressing: Russia. A dowry is still a thing in some parts of Russia. If the groom's family can't come up with a sufficient amount or a satisfactory dowry to win the bride, a substitute "bride" in the form of a cross dressing friend or family member will stand in until the dowry is met. Do you think some just go with the flow?

- Delicieux Toilette La Soupe: France. (NO NO NO...say it isn't so). After the wedding reception, the couple's family will collect all the leftovers in a "hodgepodge" and it could be anything. They bring this "toilette la soupe" (yep in a "toilet bowl) to the couple's room where the couple is expected to drink/devour the stuff to provide sufficient fuel for the night ahead. Thankfully, most modern families go with melted chocolate; however you are still drinking down the brown stuff out of a toilet!

- Kissing Fun: Sweden. If the bride or the groom has to use the bathroom, a whirlwind of activity begins as the guests immediately bombard them with a kiss on the cheek. For luck? Not sure.

- Spitting On The Bride: Massai Nation - Kenya. The father of the bride blesses his daughter by spitting on her head and then her breasts. She leaves the village with her husband after this blessing and never looks back. If she does, she may turn to stone.

- Kidnapping The Brides: Romania. Apparently if you want to marry someone, just kidnap them and keep them by your side for at least 3 days, they automatically become your wife. : )

- Shooting The Bride: China. This is sort of romantic. In the Yugur Tribes in China, a groom will shoot his bride with bow and three (3) arrows (thankfully no tips). Once he does this, he collects the arrows and breaks them thus ensuring that the love last forever.

- Shaving Off The Hair: China. Most men notice women with a head full of hair and go into the marriage because of the way the woman looks. In some regions of China, it is considered a sign of beauty and cleanliness for a woman once she becomes married to shave off all but a lock of her hair.

- Polterabend (Smashing Dishes): Germany. The newlyweds are brought gifts of "new" plates, pots, cookery, etc The couple is expected to smash the plates, bang the pots, and break the cookeries to ward off evil spirits. This is said to bring them good luck in the years ahead while preparing the to face obstacles together.

UNIQUE AND INTERESTING WEDDING FACTS

CONTROVERSIAL MARRIAGES

- Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel. It's not so much their nuptials in Itlay in 2012 that was the controversy. It was a video that a friend of theirs made of "homeless" people congratulating them on their wedding. People felt that publishing that video exploited the homeless of LA; not to mention touched on some potential infringements on their rights. Timberlake apologized for the video.

- So Honey Boo Boo's Mom gets married. Wow, talk about fashion - the bride and groom wore bright orange and camouflage outfits. And the menu was top of the line with roasted pig. Publicity stunt?

- Courtney Stodden, a 16 year old model, met 51 year old actor Doug Hutchinson and within hours of meeting each other for the FIRST TIME got married in a Las Vegas chapel. Is that the only controversy? Apparently not. Critics claim her plastic surgeries have given her too much of a "mature" look.

- Bridal demands gone awry? Rainbeau Mars - Health Guru Extraordinaire - asked her guests to undergo a 3 week cleanse and vegan diet BEFORE coming to her nuptials to Michael Karlin.

- The Hong Kong Bride - as she has become known as - spouted off to her guests that if they didn't want to give her and her hubby-to-be cash gifts, then they didn't need to come to her wedding as she wasn't opening a charity. Unfortunately for her, her video went viral on Facebook; hence, her new title.

- Hugh Hefner and Crystal Harris - on again and off again. 86 years old to her 26 years made for quite a conversation piece.
