Today is the 85th anniversary of Action Comics #1 Which means it’s also Superman's 85th birthday.

Created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, Superman was the first super powered comic character which has led to this comic being the start of the superhero genre.

The comic sold for 10 cents and featured other stories other than Superman. The initial print of the comic sold out of their 200,000 copies. Once publisher, National Allied Publications, realized that the Superman stories were the star of the comic; Action Comics were selling a million copies a month! Action Comics #1 is one of the only comics to sell for over $2 million dollars!! Sadly Siegel and Shuster were only paid $130 for their work. Luckily they have finally earned their recognition for creating the greatest superhero of all time!!

We would like to send our thoughts and prayers to the family of Lisa Loring, the original Wednesday Addams, who passed away this past Saturday at the age of 64.

Setting the bar for Christina Ricci and Jenna Ortega, Loring was only 6 years old when she played the pigtailed member of the Addams Family.

NOTE: This was not something we were aware of at the time of our recording of today's episode on Netflix's "Wednesday," nor did we know about Loring's passing when we released the episode.

Armando Munoz (Darwin) has the ability to automatically adapt to any situation which makes him a very powerful mutant. His body can provide him with anything he made need in a situation like being able to see in the dark, breathe underwater, or even immediately know a foreign or alien language. His abilities also make him invulnerable to absolutely anything!

Unfortunately, his portrayal in the movie "X-Men: First Class" wasn't great as he is killed by the enemy... which shouldn't happen. But we'll save that rant for the podcast.

Happy Birthday to Jane Fonda and Samuel L. Jackson!!

Jane Fonda starred in the 1968 comic book movie "Barbarella" which we covered in a previous episode!

Samuel L. Jackson has appeared in several comic book movies. Most known as Nick Fury in the MCU, Jackson has also played the Octopus in 2008's "The Spirit" and Valentine in 2014's "Kingsman: The Secret Service." And though not a comic book movie, we still count the Unbreakable universe where Mr. Jackson played the villainous Elijah Price aka Mr. Glass.

Created by the legendary Jack Kirby and Joe Simon, Captain America first appeared in Timely Comics (which would later become Marvel Comics). One of the most popular characters during World War II, his comic wouldn't do as well after the war and it ended in 1950. Once Marvel came into being, the character was reintroduced in 1964.

Released this day in 2017.

The partly directed by Zack Snyder and Joss Whedon "Justice League" was DC's attempt to catch up with Marvel's success with the Avengers. Introducing movie audiences to the characters of Cyborg, The Flash, and Aquaman; this movie had them team up with Batman and Wonder Woman after the death of Superman to stop Steppenwolf, who served the tyrannical Darkseid, and possibly bring back the Man of Steel. This version of the Justice League (which also included Green Lantern) was first seen in "Justice League" #1 in 2011 as part of DC's New 52 storyline.

"The Punisher," a spinoff of the Netflix "Daredevil" series, follows vigilante Frank Castle (who first appeared in "The Amazing Spider-Man" #129 in 1974) as he uncovers a huge conspiracy connected to those responsible for the death of his family.

The late Alvin Schwartz began his career in comics in 1939 for All-American Publications and National Comics which would merge to form DC. In the 1940s, he wrote the comic strips for Batman, Superman, and Captain Marvel (Shazam). In 1954, Schwartz wrote "World's Finest Comics" #71 which was the first story to feature both Batman and Superman! Though he technically didn't create the character of Bizarro, Schwartz was one of the first writers to use the character in a comic strip the same time Bizarro debuted in "Superboy" #68.

Known by many as Mickey from the "Rocky" franchise, the late Burgess Meredith was the first actor to bring The Penguin to live action. The writers of "Batman" loved working with him so much that they prepared scripts way in advance for The Penguin so that they could use Meredith whenever he was available. Meredith even played The Penguin in an episode of "The Monkees."

After leaving DC in 1985 after his first published comic didn't pay as much as he hoped, the late Darwyn Cooke would return in the 90s as a storyboard artist for "The New Batman Adventures" and "Superman: The Animated Series." He returned to comics in the 2000s with the standalone comic "Batman: Ego" and the great "The New Frontier" which would become the second animated film of the DCAU. He would also work with the characters of Catwoman, The Spirit, Jonah Hex, Spider-Man, Wolverine, and the "Before Watchmen" series in 2012.
