The greatest solutions often arise out of a personal need. That was the case for mindful MATERIALS. It started as an internal project at one architecture firm to create efficiency and consistency in specifying healthier and more sustainable materials on projects.

The framework they created, however, quickly evolved into something much bigger. In fact, mindful MATERIALS has become somewhat of a global movement with architects, designers and manufacturers working together to catalyze healthy materials and transparency across the built environment.

I caught up with Laurel Chądzyński, director of engagement at mindful MATERIALS, at the Greenbuild conference to learn about the organization's history and how it operates today. Jen Levisen also took us on a quick tour of some of the manufacturers that have joined the mindful MATERIALS movement.

Like all great movements, mindful MATERIALS grew out of a need. For many years, it existed as a database, but along that path, it began to attract stakeholders from all corners of the building industry who were passionate about proliferating healthy materials action.

Organizations like the Living Future Institute (ILFI) are working to bring more awareness to the "worst-in-class" chemicals.
