The results are in! In a close count of 24-21, the quilt advances!

Gabe and Cody totally thought the quilt was an automatic, but the cig pouch gave it a run for its money!

Now we advance to Round 2 of the bracket!

Our next matchup will be Daddy’s Lunch Bucket taking on the Family Cast Iron Collection! Remember to “Like” for the bucket and “Love” for the cast iron.

The Recipe Rolodex advances!

This next matchup may come off as a bit lopsided, but it’s a matchup nonetheless!

The cig pouch was a staple in many mawmaw’s kitchens, Buicks, and purses, and it was typically paired with a fresh cup of black Folger’s coffee and a good old fashioned word search somewhere close by. These bad boys were packed tight with Virginia Slims, Salems, or Lucky Strikes and a tie dye lighter, and when you heard the snap of those clasps, you knew right then and there business was about to unfold.

The quilt in itself needs no explanation. There was no way you were sleeping with this, but everyone had them out for their guests to cuddle up in and relax because all of the other good blankets were taken. Younger siblings know how this puppy feels simply due to the fact that this is all they had to survive at mawmaw’s house. Although itchy, every weave and pattern was made with love, and that’s something that couldn’t be taken away. All of these quilts were cherished, and they were a status symbol for many. When you walked into a house and saw this, you knew there was love, sincerity, and a mawmaw somewhere down the line that cared about her family.

Y’all vote. We’re having a blast here with these!

Cast Iron Collection advances to the next round!

In this round, we have two GOATs going head-to-head here!

Grandpappy’s tools, although outdated, still bring with them the memories of many years ago of building birdhouses, squirrel feeders, and much, much more — even the bad times of not holding the flashlight correctly and getting yelled at for it. The tools themselves each have a story of their own to tell.

MawMaw’s Recipe Rolodex was a staple in every kitchen, and each recipe holds the key to many folks’ taste buds. Homemade biscuits, casseroles, sweet treats, and many more bring back Thanksgivings, Christmas’, and family cookouts and reunions of decades past.

Both are surely still used or on display even in today’s world with modern technology, but which one of these holds the most weight in this matchup?

Ok, y’all. Let’s see how this matchup goes!

We love nothing more than cooking with the hand-me-downs of some perfectly seasoned cast iron.

On another note, canning is a staple in so many Appalachian families, including our own! This was a matchup Gabe and Cody were eager to see the results of.

Share this with your Appalachian friends, so we can see where this battle stands!

Round 1!

Both of these were a staple in our households.

Dirty welding caps with the most random patterns that were meaningless and lunch buckets with union worker stickers and stains were symbols of the hard work our dads did on the daily to provide for our families.

Which one takes the cake for you in Round 1?

Over the years of this podcast, Cody and Gabe have had a multitude of various, random “heirlooms” or what many may consider knickknacks, that they always randomly remember and discuss with each other whether that be on the podcast or just around the fire.

It was only appropriate that we created our own bracket to let the people decide! Be on the lookout for Round 1 coming soon!

New Episode: An Appalachian Renaissance?
While there have been several musicians bringing the “Appalachian style” of country music to the forefront of the genre, the viral success of some random guy who lives just outside the region in Virginia on RadioWV has pushed that envelope even further. Thanks to musicians like Tyler Childers, Nolan Taylor, and Charles Wesley Godwin, stories that come from the Appalachian heart are connecting with people across the nation. They are touching on a plethora of social and socioeconomic topics. They are sharing OUR stories through the stories they put to music.
Are we seeing an Appalachian Renaissance?

Rednecks drove fear into the hearts of coal bosses. So much so that the coal companies literally weaponized the federal government against them by sending in federal troops during the battle of Blair Mountain. Workers died, Unions were formed, but the coal companies still hauled off the riches.

We’re big on history, and Appalachia is rich with it.

"The term is known best as an insult for backwoods hillbillies, but in one chapter of Appalachian history “redneck” was also used to spread fear of communist militants and oppress organized mine workers."
