General Nerdery a podcast about loving things.

24/10/2020

A little over a year ago I guest starred on a podcast some friends do called Fried Squirms. We covered Swamp Thing, and as the resident comic nerd they thought it would be fun. It was. I drew this as a thank you and then promptly lost it in the art room.
A year later we've expanded the podcast into the Earvvyrm Network, I meet every week with Tyler for General Nerdery, The Art of Wargaming is on the network, and a third podcast will be dropping as soon as editing is wrapped up. Today I found the drawing and decided it would be a good time to color it up.

Transform and roll out! To a podcast social media site that posts its updates on time!

In disguise or not, when a robot the size of a moon approaches a world, people notice. When you get together this voice cast for a movie based on a pop culture landmark like the Transformers, Your Generals notice...and talk about it.

Welcome back to the Disc fellow nerds. Captain Vimes has one last murder to solve before he retires. Let's see what the Generals think.

This week Your Generals revisit Discworld and the Ankh-Morpork City Watch when they talk about Men at Arms.

Notice for all our fellow Nerds. If you are not averse to digital comics, there is currently a ton of Black Panther titles free on comiXology as long as you don't mind that they are all singles rather than collections. I'm pretty sure I just got almost the entire Ta-Nehisi Coates run, plus Nnedi Okorafor's Shuri run

Ahahaha I'm so bad at posting on this page.
So have a comic review to make up for it.
Food Wars: Shokugeki No Soma.
If you know anime I know this isn't a new recommendation, but I generally don't, so this is a new experience for me.
Food Wars is a Japanese shōnen manga series written by Yūto Tsukuda and illustrated by Shun Saeki. Yuki Morisaki also provides the recipes for the series. my friend Sean who was on the Zelda episode recommended this to me, saying it made him a better cook.
The story of an elite cooking academy in Japan (with just SHOCKINGLY unhealthy standards for learning) Food Wars is an interesting mix of a genuine love of cooking with the Shonen format where there is always a new opponent with a new power level.
The series was described to me as "h***y on main" by a coworker, and honestly it may be the most accurate description I've ever read. The series originated from a sketch the artist did depicting enjoyment of food as an or**sm. So it really drives home the point. Food is so good peoples clothes explode off them regularly, and I don't think I would read this book on public transport. Fan Service is a time honored format of the Shonen format, but even taking that into account, this borders on to much (which is definitely a thing) it's saving grace is it is more than happy to have ANYONE in the series explode in a foodgasm regardless of appearance, though I would lie if I said the majority weren't buxom women.
So if you like goofy stories, the Shonen format, and fan service galore this is the series for you. If not? Maybe give this one a skip.

Oh my God I haven't updated in over a month. I'm real bad at social media friends.
While I was on a break last week though, Eui jumped in to cover for me. Gave them an opportunity to let them vent their feelings about Tarantino in the Quaratinoff!

As General Zac takes the week off, friend of the show Eustacia comes back to have their say about Quentin Tarantino. Will General Tyler's emotions hold up? Do Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill, and Django Unchained hold up?

Day 7 of 10. 10 comics to get you through your lack of Belegarth/dnd blues.
Battle Chasers is infamous, the art is pure crisp Joe Madueira, but Red Monika (see below) is DISTRACTINGLY over endowed.
Like Orc Stain, this was never finished, great artists with terrible attention spans. Madueira moved on to video games, creating Dark Siders, and eventually a comic book sequel to this book (Battle Chasers: Night War I believe)
The story follows a young girl who inherits her father's magical gauntlets, giving her incredible power. Along side her Father's pupil (the greatest swordsman in the land) a retired War Golem, and a powerful cantankerous old wizard, she goes in search of her father (who may or may not be dead.

Oh man I can't maintain a daily schedule to save my life.
Day 6 of 10, 10 fantasy comics to get you through your lack of Belegarth/dnd blues.
Orc Stain by James Stokoe. Fair warning, this book was never finished and never will be from what I can tell.
Inspired by Lord of the Rings, Stokoe decided he wanted to do a story delving into Orc culture, which doesn't really exist in the books.
But because it's James Stokoe, drugs, s*x, and dried chopped up pen*ses as a system of currency proliferate.
Orc Stain is weird and good and insanely detailed. But there is a slight content warning for s*x, violence, and drug use.

Technically missed a day again. But I haven't gone to bed yet so still counts.
Day 5 of 10, 10 comics to get you through your lack of Belegarth/dnd blues.
This one feels like a cheat because it has guns and space ships, but it really does feel like the middle ages of Star Wars.
Taking place a few generations before Kotor or the Old Republic, Tales of the Jedi takes place around that "thousand generations" that Obi Wan talked about. Bladed weapons are more common, Sith magic is a thing, there are ancient temples, ghosts, beast riders, Tales of the Jedi has it all.
Most of the story focuses on Ulic Qel Drama, Nomi Sunrider, and Exar Kun. Coming out before the prequels, there was so much room to explore what the Jedi and Sith were. Tales features the first double bladed lightsaber in Star Wars fiction, and showed the earliest days of the Mandalorians.
Long story short, it's pretty damn cool.

Day 4 of 10, 10 comics to get you through your lack of Belegarth/dnd blues (it's actually day 5 and I'm running late but shhhhhhh, time is an illusion)
I really wanted to do a manga, but to be honest I don't know the medium well enough to give a strong recommendation. Considered Naruto, but it doesn't quite fit the theme.
So instead we have a Hong Kong comic. Storm Riders by Wing Shi Ma.
An absolutely beautiful watercolor comic. Storm Riders follows the characters Wind and Cloud as the navigate the complicated world of the Kung Fu coming in Ancient China. In classic form there are over the top battles, magic swords, and insane abilities. Alliances shift, heroes become villains, enemies become allies, and no one knows where anything will end.
Sadly this will be the HARDEST comic to find of the recommendations. When I was in high school there was a translator selling the books, but honestly I don't know if there's been an English retailer in over a decade.

Day 3 of 10, 10 comics to get you through your lack of Belegarth/dnd quarantine blues.
Today we change tracks a little by bringing you what may be the greatest Samurai comic of all time (fu***ng fight me on this, I dare you)
Usagi Yojimbo follows the story of the Ronin Samurai Usagi as he wanders Japan after the death of his lord. Featuring a perfect balance of fun and serious storytelling, compelling characters, and heartwrenching moments.
It's easy to overlook because of Stan Sakai's simplistic art style and the fact that it uses animals for the main characters, and the fact that it's multiple times crossovered with the Ninja Turtles, but this book really is without peer in its genre.

Day 2 of 10, 10 comics to get you through your lack of Belegarth/dnd blues.
Anyone who knows me know this one was going to come up.
Rat Queens is the greatest DnD comic of all time. A team of insane morally questionable adventures protect and destroy the town of Palisade.
The Rat Queens is S*x positive, Q***r positive, violence and humor. It's one of the only comics that Cece reads, and I always pick it up immediately when the new volume comes out.
It does feature some uneven storytelling, but it's good enough to keep through the rough spots.
There definitely is a content warning for violence, language, drug use, and nudity though.

10 days, 10 fantasy comics to fill the hole that you're missing from D&D/Belegarth.
Day 1- Skull Kickers.
Credit ated by Jim Zub, the Skull Kickers are two mercenaries, the Bald One and the Short One fighting monsters and causing chaos. The only thing not traditional fantasy setting in it is a gun, and that does get a story development later on explaining it.
The only comic that has ever come close to getting the feel of a D&D campaign or Bel is The Rat Queens, which will come up later.
While never a great seller, this book put Zub on the map. Beyond superhero work he's continued in Fantasy, working on the Conan/Red Sonja crossover, the Dungeons and Dragons book from IDW, and recently taking over the Marvel Conan title.
Best part about Skull Kickers? It's all free online.

Alright nerds, Zac and Tyler need all your weird nerd questions for a project we're working on. They can be funny, they can be serious, they can be weird.
If there was ever a nerd thing you wanted to know "How did Storm and Black Panther hook up?" "How do Cyclops' optic blasts work?" "When did Superman fight the K*K?" "What was the deal with the 50's diner in attack of the Clones?" "Objectively who is the best Pokemon?" (It's Snorlax) "Who was that guy who threw a beer bottle at Iron Man's head in Civil War?" "Is Wolverine circumcised?" "Why did power Girl's chest get bigger with every issue of Justice Society?"
Drop them in the link below. It doesn't have to be connected to comics, just connected to nerd. Please and thank you.
