A wild CryptoPunk deal just went down: Ape Punk #2386 was scooped up for only 10 ETH 👀

Years ago, it was fractionalized into 10,000 shares on Niftex with an estimated value of ~450 ETH

Although the platform folded, the contract allowed for a buyout with a 14-day window for shareholders to reject

Sure enough, the buyer submitted an offer of 0.001 ETH per share and it cleared today

Recent Ape Punks sold for 620 ETH, 3,300 ETH and 2,690 ETH by comparison

Is this the biggest CryptoPunk bargain ever?

OpenSea, a leading NFT marketplace, announced it has received a Wells notice from the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), signaling the agency’s intention to sue.

The SEC reportedly considers NFTs traded on the platform to be securities, a classification that could have significant implications for the NFT market.

In response, OpenSea expressed its surprise and concern. “We’re shocked the SEC would make such a sweeping move against creators and artists. But we’re ready to stand up and fight,” said CEO Devin Finzer.

This action by the SEC extends its ongoing scrutiny of the cryptocurrency industry, which has previously targeted companies like Coinbase and Uniswap. By focusing on NFTs, the SEC has entered new territory, potentially affecting many artists and developers who use these digital assets.

To support creators facing similar legal challenges, OpenSea has pledged $5 million to cover legal fees for NFT creators and developers who receive Wells notices.

Fibzer emphasized the platform’s commitment to defending the NFT community: “Every creator, big or small, should be able to innovate without fear.”

In a landmark legal challenge, two artists filed a lawsuit against the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) today to seek judicial clarification on whether the agency has authority over NFTs.

, a law professor and filmmaker, and , a songwriter known on social media as “Song a Day Mann,” are the plaintiffs in this case. They are requesting the court to specify what actions involving NFT creation and sales might invoke U.S. securities laws.

Central to their inquiry is whether artists need to register their NFT artworks with the SEC prior to public sale and if they are required to disclose any risks associated with purchasing their digital creations.

The attorneys representing Frye and Mann have drawn a notable comparison to Taylor Swift concert tickets to underscore their argument. They contend that, similar to NFTs, Swift’s tickets are resold in secondary markets and promoted by the artist herself. Yet, they argue, it would be unreasonable for the SEC to classify Swift’s tickets or collectibles as securities, highlighting the potential overreach of the SEC’s regulatory authority.

Consequential moments in American politics have long been depicted in the art world.

President Abraham Lincoln’s 1865 assassination is the subject of numerous works exhibited from institutions like The Metropolitan Museum of Art to Ford’s Theater, where the infamous shooting took place.

Ditto for President John F. Kennedy’s 1963 assassination, which has been explored widely across contemporary art. Andy Warhol’s “Jackie” series famously depicted the former First Lady both at the peak of Kennedy’s powers and in the tragic aftermath of her husband’s murder.

Following Saturday’s assassination attempt on former President Donald J. Trump at a campaign rally in Butler, Pa., it should come as no surprise that several digital artists were quick to put their own stamp on the event.

Given the striking nature of the photographs from the shooting, showing a bloodied but defiant Trump hoisting a fist against an American flag backdrop, additional pieces will likely emerge in the days ahead.

Here is a roundup of some of the notable digital artists who have posted their own depictions of the incident so far. Link in bio for our full list.
